Morning vs Twilight golf

Dr.Zevia

Recommended Posts

I'm a twilight guy...cheaper golf....but it's so difficult to get twilight times here because other golfers are cheapo's like me.

I had a twilight pass last year...but it was early...1pm weekday...2pm weekends from Apr-Oct....winter was 11am.

I don't like the morning...dew and it's colder.

Summer heat isn't extreme here.

I prefer mornings.  I like not having to chase the sun of twilight golf.  Slow play in the mornings isn't as frustrating to me as in the evenings when im trying to finish a round before dark. But, twilight golf is cheaper...

Tough one, I like both. Weekdays I'm playing twilight of course after work, and for the first half of the year me and my pal get 18 in no sweat teeing off at 5pm. Now weekend rounds, I prefer something earlier. For me stewing around all day then teeing off at 2pm isn't my cup of tea. For the weekend I like to get the round done earlier in the day and make more use of the 48 hours of freedom.

Still, I play my best golf in the AM.  Midday or later, my body is winding down.  It's harder for me to hold my concentration to score well.  That can be seen in my work schedule too. I am at the office at 6am.  Plus, slower golfers tend to play in PM/twilight.

I think playing in the morning is quite a bit more magical but only ever really end up doing it on golf trips.

May change when I get older but I appreciate staying up late on weekends too much to get up early the next day. I see enough of the morning starting work at 7 AM every weekday

Hard to schedule a 7 AM tee time when you know you aren't going to sleep until 3 AM the night before lol

Although I enjoy the 9 hole twilight walking round during the summer, I much prefer to play in the mornings. It just gives me the rest of the day to be able to do other things especially on the weekends.

If I'm playing at 1-2 pm on a Saturday then that pretty much becomes my whole day. I'm not going to wake up at 8 am just to do the other things I need to do before golf (mow the lawn, go to the grocery store, etc.).

Squeezing in 9 twilight holes with my sons was magical.  We sometimes didn't tee off until 7:45PM.  Last couple holes literally in the dark, with only a light by the side of the clubhouse illuminating as we putted out on the dew swept 9th green. Fond. fond memories.  My sons and I often reminisce about those glorious rounds.

Give me twilight every single time. In the morning everything is wet with dew, the greens are slow because of the dew, green speeds are changing throughout the round as the dew evaporates. If there are any “husky” guys in front of you there may be indentations in the soft greens, especially around the hole.

It gets hot here in the summertime so it’s also nice that the temperatures are dropping as you get later in the round which can help if you tend to get fatigued, vs. getting hotter throughout the round of you start in the morning. The courses are also usually jam packed in the morning, usually with the slower players, but it tends to thin out in the afternoons.

I prefer to play in the afternoons, especially with late sunsets in the summer, and I hate putting on dew soaked greens!

I aim to play as much as I can (2-4x per week) which generally means I'm pairing up with friends whenever they are available. Some play early. Some play mid-afternoon. I love twilight / after-work as well.

I do it all but there is a noticeable scoring advantage for me during the afternoon/twilight times.

I would prefer not do golf early if it were up to me.

Tougher question for me than it used to be but I still lean towards twilight. During the summer here, we can still be out playing after 10pm no hassle at all and there is nothing quite like the shadows cast across the course as the sun goes down, the breeze drops and everything in the world seems peaceful.

All of that said, if it is a competition, I would rather go early. The older I get the less energy I have come the end of the day. Spending the day working and/or waiting around to get out and play doesn’t do me very much good and the golf is never as good as it should be. Mentioned this on another thread about Club Championships. Ours is 72 hole strokeplay Wednesday to Saturday which involves a week which looks like this:-

Wed 8am - Office til 5

Wed 6pm - 1st Round usually done around 10pm

Thu 8am (tired) - Office til 5

Thu 6pm -  2nd Round usually done around 10pm

Fri 8am (very tired) - Office til 4

Fri 5pm - 3rd Round (wondering if it is all worth it, usually done around 8/9

Sat 12-2 (depending on whether you are in the tournament and most definitely absolutely exhausted).

If I am honest, the twilight rounds that week aren’t as much fun.

Sitting firmly on the fence.

Weekend rounds with the "group" in whatever combination I prefer mornings and earlier the better for me.  Like to be done in time to have a nice lunch and enjoy the rest of the day.  Unfortunately, we have some non-early risers and tee times have shifted to 9-10 range last couple of seasons and on Saturdays it's a bit claustrophobic - so sometimes an early 9 holes will get played with one or two others and then another 9 with the gang (or 18).  27 by 1 pm is still a good day.

But, evenings the course is usually pretty empty and I enjoy going out by myself or with my wife and enjoy the peace and quiet, which also very often includes going back out in the evenings on weekends, lol.

When my oldest daughter was in HS I'd head out there after work and meet her after practice and we'd play until dark every night in the spring during her golf season she didn't have a meet - weekends we played afternoons or evenings (she liked to sleep in, lol - my first hole in one she said she wanted to play with me and a few friends that Saturday but we teed off really  early and I let her sleep in that morning - boy did I hear about that).

Sounds to me like you're probably a morning business brain too.   I think better on the course in the AM.
