Stick in the Mud?

Recommended Posts

The setting, Club Championship 2021.  (Medal play -final day).   One of my fellow competitors was in a personal cart and has a nice stereo speaker set up.  He plays music, some I know, some I don’t, but loud enough to hear from 40 yards or so.  I put up with it for a couple holes, and then asked him to turn it down on the tee.  A few holes later, again I asked him to turn it down on the tee.  Finally on the 14th tee, It was loud again, and told him to SHUT IT OFF!!!.  When music is unfamiliar to me, and there is a transition or change of beat at the top of my swing, my focus is not good enough to cope.  My point of view, no music during tournaments other than headphones.  But, then I see things like # 16 at waste management or Ryder cup 1st tee, and I think I might just be a grumpy old man.  Anyone run into this at the State or USGA level?

Opinions?

You handled it as well as can be expected and gave him more chances than I would've. As mentioned by others, it's one thing to play your jams in a daily scat or similar. But in a club championship final or sanctioned events such as qualifiers, nope.

The only exception I can think of is if your group is vying for last place with nothing to gain, and everybody has basically conceded, and blown it off. But even then it must be mutually agreeable, on the first tee.

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

Hard to believe they would allow this.  Did this competitor have some particular pull with the club?  Waste Management and Ryder Cup are different because the noise is constant and maintains the same level throughout the competitors' swing, which is much easier to adjust to than a sudden guitar riff or cymbal crash at the top of your backswing.

Music is for social play, and club events where you are playing 2 net of 4 and drinking beer.

Medal play?  No way.

State or USGA event?  Ha!

I've definitely played in some M/Gs where it was clearly a social event with the music and the booze flowing.

Club championship is a very different vibe

Break out the ear pods or turn it off. I did not come to play and listen to someone else's idea of music. I do play with an older gentleman who plays music, and he keeps it low. If you ask him, he would turn it off, no problem. This thread hasn't been locked yet, asking for a friend.

If it came down to having to know the songs and beats for it not to impact my swing as the OP mentioned, I'd probably just ask him to turn it off on the 1st tee. In a casual round sure, but not a competition. I have found most people really don't know how loud their music is or how far it carries on a golf course.

I am pretty picky when it comes to music. I wouldn’t impose my musical taste on others. I  only listen to music on the course when playing alone.

This, exactly this.  Even if it were just a casual round, having music audible from 40 yards away is rude as hell.

I played in a tournament last weekend. Three carts in the group of four. First cart was playing old Johnny Cash type country music. The second was playing EDM/Pop music; except he didn't have cell reception so it was the same three songs over and over again. We'd pull up to the teebox and it would be a mishmash of those two completely conflicting genres. Awful.

I’d talk to the committee and see if you can get a rule put in place for next time. Take the onus off of the individual. This shouldn’t even come up during a competitive round.

Too pervasive a problem now. The horse completely out of the barn. When I’m paired with someone who listens to music I also take out my own speaker.4 for 4 rounds we decided on no music.

No music allowed in any of our state events. It’s in bold print on the tee sheet.

A few years ago, I was a guest at a friend’s club. It was a small member/guest with only about twenty teams. We are on the 16th tee and we can clearly hear an argument on the 12th tee which  is about 150-yards away, which tells you how loud their “discussion” had gotten. I was curious and walked around some hedges so that I could see the 12th tee box. I witnessed some guy beating the daylights out of another guy. After the round, we learned that the guy who got his clock cleaned, had been told several times to turn down his music.

I am all for music during a casual round or charity event. I am against listening to music in any tournament setting.

So, I ask this.  If you tell the person playing the music that it distracts you and he continues to play it doesn't that indicate that he is intentionaly trying to distract you and subject to a penalty?

I suppose the Committee would have had to draft such a Code of Conduct before one can be penalized.

Besides, being plain rude is not necessarily intentional distracting, it is just being rude.

You’re not going to see it at the state or USga level.  It’s absolutely a tempo aide if the correct playlist is employed.  And that can be Tailored to the person if he/she practices with that same playlist daily.  I can use music to get into an unbelievably good tempo and groove.  But I absolutely think it’s cheating on course.  I’d call it out and ask the committee to rule.

Could be worse. You could have gotten paired with someone who constantly plays hateful, toxic, racist political podcasts on his phone (speaker) the entire time he's on the course. And yes, such golfers do exist or at least one does that I know of. No way I'd even finish the first hole if told I was supposed to play with someone doing that.
