There's a huge gap between making the cut in a major and contending much less winning one.  Making cuts was a reasonable reach goal this year, but I can't imagine a 2023 like 2022 will be considered success for a golfer with Tiger's career accomplishments.  I think 2023 needs to be more like top 30 in 2/4 majors to demonstrate significant progress.  2024 would be contend in 2/4 majors.  If he's not making that kind of minimum progress I think we are done.

I actually think he looked much better physically at the Open.  I also think he still has considerable room to get better physically.  I believe he recognizes that he has to play more golf to be competitive, enjoys the atmosphere, etc.  I could see his schedule in the future looking something like the below:

Farmers

Genesis

Arnold Palmer

Players Championship

Masters

Wells Fargo

PGA Championship

Memorial

US Open

Open Championship

Hero World Challenge

If you believe what Tiger has been telling us about how he sees his playing future then this schedule is totally unrealistic.  I think he would be thrilled to be competitive with this schedule

Genesis

Arnold Palmer or Players

Masters

PGA

US Open

Open Championship

And to be honest the evidence is not yet there that he could play even that schedule.

It is really dependent on the leg these next several months. If it gets to the point that he can play and practice a regular TW schedule he can certainly end up in the winners circle again. If the leg doesn't improve or he doesn't have the will to work he won't be back in contention. It was quite clear at the Open that he didn't spend enough time of the feel part of the game. His short game and putting were just not good.

I wish he'd shut it down and state that he intends to play a schedule like Tom Watson or Fred Couples. Play about once a month, slightly more often when ramping up to the majors.

I've wondered if there were any stipulations in his LIV offer about how often he'd need to play or how a medical retirement would affect the offered payment. There's no way he'll make more in winnings than what he was reportedly offered. I think he'll start to slow down if/when Charlie starts playing high level junior or college golf.

I think purely from a technical perspective, im obviously not a coach or even qualified to suggest but watching the Open, it looked like tiger's lower body action was so quiet it was bordering on non existant.

I think as a result of that, there were times where his hands and arms took control of the shot and at times this resulted in a pull left which looked quite ugly.

When you couple this with the fact that with a driver, his ball speed is down in the 165-170mph range. This is still QUICK, but compared to the big guns on tour who are pushing high 170s into the mid 180s, to me this would suggest Tiger's iron game is going to be put under a lot more pressure than other players, simply due to the fact he will be forced to play more conservatively off the tee.

I actually think watching him this year, the most freely he was moving was days 1 and 2 at Augusta. He looked to have more zip in his swing.

In the lead up to the Open at the McManus pro am, he seemed to be hobbling around really badly.....in a buggy and still hobbling.

His game could easily win a PGA Tour event, but he doesnt play them. If he could find a way to get healthy and play 16 events in a season, then I could see him winning and being a little bit "horses for courses"

Think his style of play NOW would be a really good fit for some of the old school tour venues.... im thinking Colonial, Harbour Town, River Highlands, Pebble Beach/Monterrey/Spyglass spring to mind.

He should stop playing the US Open and PGA

Agreed on the PGA, but I really hope he gives #2 a shot next year. He has always played pretty well at Pinehurst and it’s not the most difficult course to walk, although it is pretty long.

Tiger is not done.  Imo he has 1 more major left in him if he can heal up some more.

The guy pretty much hasn’t practiced anywhere near that was necessary and made the first 2 cuts at majors.

Tiger has 1 more Masters left in him.

Guy looks beat, but who am I to count the GOAT out.  As for him sullying his image or legacy or whatever, I call BS.  We all know the greatness that was Tiger Woods in his prime and we'll always have the old footage and personal memories as proof.  Him hobbling around on a mangled leg only adds to his legend, imo.  The guy is the ultimate competitor when it comes to golf, and I'm happy to watch him chase windmills until HE decides it's enough for him.

Personally I think Tiger missed a poignant and entirely fitting opportunity last week at St. Andrews. He really should have called it a day and gone out with a wave on the Swilcan Bridge and then to soak it in on the 18th green.

I’m basing this on his average round being 75 this year and what my eyes see after a round and the discomfort the guy is obviously in with a pronounced limp. I really don’t see what he’s got to gain by either kidding himself, or not taking the proper recovery time his body obviously needs.

But at the end the day he is his own master and needs to do what he feels/thinks to be the right thing I guess.

I've always wondered, of all the coaches to go to, what made him pick Foley?

Well, at that point he had dumped Butch who was the hottest coach at the time, for alleged loose lips which back then was a line you could not cross with TW. Then he went to Haney, who was fairly prominent and worked with a number of tour pros (including IIRC O'Meara) and stayed with him for several years before dumping him. Maybe there weren't all that many who he thought were good, I don't know.

I understand this was after the scandal, so perhaps some coaches (or their wives, for that matter) didn't want anything to do with him, but still. Seemed like an odd choice at the time and in hindsight, you're probably correct. May not have had the back injuries.

he liked Hunter Mahan’s swing, which ironically is one of the top 10 all-time sloppiest on tour. Bizarre.

Id have thought he went to Foley on the basis that under Haney, he had a bad two way miss and as he has said a lot of times, he doesnt like getting "stuck".

Foley was all about getting the weight forward stack and tilt style, taking away the "stuck" motion, no?

He played really well whilst working with Foley, had what, im guessing 8-10 wins? that was good

It wasn't just Hunter. At the time SnT was kind of popular and Foley was known as a tour coach that taught a modified version of it that was better. At the time he had some top players in his stable (Rose, Mahan, O hair, etc) and they were playing extremely well with good long games to boot. He was probably the most popular coach at the time on tour.

TBH, I was a critic of his swing under Foley but at the time it wasn't a bad choice of a coach given what I explained above with the players he had success with. Only better choice would of been Butch.

Hunter Mahan. Now there's a guy who has literally fallen off the map.

Have to think that bad chip at the Ryder Cup did him in. I remember him beating Rory in the match play event in 2013 (crap, that was 9 years ago).

Don't forget a repeat of his victory over the weak-field Zozo Championship during silly season.

2019 Zozo Championship had the 13th strongest field of the season, ahead of the Tour Championship and WGC HSBC Champions events and just behind Arnold Palmer Invitational and Memorial and the FedEx playoffs... That wasn't a weak field.

This was him the afternoon prior..

If he WASN'T impaired, we would have heard about it. But instead it's al been hush hush. Not to mention, he has a history of this.

Bottom line, the accident happened, he's lucky he isn't using a prosthetic at this point. Anything we get out of him now is gravy.

Tiger? Wasn’t he arrested passed out in his car in the middle of the highway and he test positive for opioids, sleeping meds, and THC?

I don’t know how this guy still have driving license. And insurance! Who give Tiger insurance they crazy?!

What a shot. And judging by those pants, that has to be early 2000s

1999, most surprising is it occupied the week after the Masters at that time too. Very unusual for him to play the week after a major, I think he basically never did it most of his career.

I was trying not to speculate but you weren't getting my meaning and misinterpreting my posts. I'm a huge Tiger fan but I don't think it is an unreasonable take to say that Tiger would not have gotten into the car accident were he not dealing with ongoing back issues. Of course it could have just been a fluke accident but there is certainly history.

Anyway, enough thread jacking. I can't see tiger playing 8-10 events as others have mentioned unless he makes serious progress with the leg.

I thought I saw somewhere that this year he does not have one round in the 60's.  If true, I don't see how he could get another win (much less win four more majors to beat Jack's record). The Golf Channel was explaining his leg surgery and the complications.  His calf muscle is mostly gone and what's left (I believe they said) was stitched to his bone.  If this is accurate I don't see how you would ever heal from this.  I tip my hat to him for suffering through all this, but time and continued pain may make him decide to retire early.
