Could Tiger be done?

donnygolf

Recommended Posts

I wonder.

Of course, I thought he was done around 2015-2016 after more surgeries and falling asleep at the wheel due to prescription medication. Then he won at East Lake and, oh yeah, another Masters. So, I was completely wrong.

After seeing him limp around at this years Masters and Open I am inclined to think, again, that he is done. I also notice how he speaks about 'the young guys' differently and how he has said he might not ever play a regular schedule.

Personally, I don't think anyone can just 'show up' and compete to win at any major, which is what he did this year. Maybe it is just a longer recovery? Then his age becomes a major factor.

Interested in your opinions.

Well, as long as they are not random one-liners I read too often that might be, "Tiger sucks", or, "Tiger is a god".

I feel he will definitely continue to play and hopefully get one more win. I know he wants 83 wins whether it’s major or not.

He should start playing events like the John Deere, 3M, and Rocket Mortgage

I get the impression (from his comments) his injuries are a extremely painful burden but not an impasse.  He stated quite frankly he will continue to play in fewer events.  I believe he will win again.

He won the masters with a buggered back. The leg he gimbeled this time was the right leg. It is for nothing more than stability and walking. If it was his left leg I might argue, but if he wants it enough, he could win again.

The very thing that drove him to win and is his downfall has driven him to win and be his downfall which could lead him to win again... and be his downfall.

His full recovery to whatever permanent limitations he may have may  take another year. If things haven't improved dramatically by next spring/summer he likely done.

Ya, and then, to actually win something, it’s not just being healthy/not in major pain, it’s being strong enough and have to mindset to commit to a full season grind of events. Like close to what he took on in 18/19.

TW was on his heroic quest to win #15 at that time. He really drove himself into the ground because he needed that major.

Not sure he still has that desire in his bones to torture himself to that extent again even health allowing.

It will be hard for him to stop or admit that he needs to. That time might not be now, but he will go on for longer than he should.

I didn't watch a lot of the Open, but it appeared to me that Tiger's limp was less pronounced.  Many times he appeared to be walking normally.  This was not the case at the Masters.  My guess would be that the strength in his leg is improving.  If he can get it to the point where he can practice effectively, I think he can continue to play.  I don't expect a 46 year old to play at the level he did at 26, but Tiger can win without his best stuff.  I would predict he may win a couple more regular events, but I don't see him winning any more majors, unless he decides to play the Champions Tour.

Father Time is undefeated and with his other injuries it's going to get harder and harder for him to win especially a major. Not saying it's impossible but it's not getting any easier especially with the talent field out there today.

But at the same time Tiger could be a head in a jar and WRX and Instagram would say he still has a shot.

Don't forget a repeat of his victory over the weak-field Zozo Championship during silly season.

Ya well, it’s only fair to offset a few of Snead wins like

“For example, five of Snead’s wins came in team events.

The panel decided to include them because of their historical significance, and also to credit Snead for his four wins at Pebble Beach, even though one came in an 18-hole tournament in 1936.

Another was achieved in a 54-hole event at Pebble Beach that ended in a four-way tie, with each player credited with victory rather than return the next day for a playoff.”

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-golf-woods-snead/woods-and-snead-tied-with-82-pga-tour-wins-but-no-comparison-says-former-commissioner-idUSKBN1ZJ1E2

Now theses are certainly a liberal application of what should be considered a pga tour win.

But the most egregious was when they awarded Snead a pga tour win for hitting the ball picker 18 times in a row after eating 12 tacos.

🤣

I actually disagree.  I think he would do better at events like a major or somewhere on a difficult track in conditions difficult for the field where you don't have to go crazy low to win.  While the strength of fields is weaker and you would think he'd stand a better chance the reality is you have to go low to win those events and he doesn't have it in him anymore to get birdies in bunches like that anymore.

1978 swing > 2022 swing.

That is not his 2013 swing, that's from the '05 Masters. I think if he had gone to his current swing instead of Foley he may have never dealt with the injuries.

And if he elects to only play Majors I don't see how he wins another.

Yeah that swing has everything to do with his ankle and leg injuries?  Thats where the pain is.

Was speaking more about the back injuries, I realize the injury from the accident is at the forefront now, and arguably may have been avoided if he wasn't dealing with the back stuff.

I agree.  Let's chart his career.

P = 1997 US Masters

Earl Woods demonstratively states, "PRIDE"  as his first emotion.

Q = 1999 Laser Surgery to correct severe myopia

R = 1999 won 8 times, then 6 straight in 2000

S = 2003 & 2004, no wins and lost # 1 world ranking to Vijay "Antler Juice" Singh

J = Injuries and personal issues

T= comeback in 2018 and 2019

U = current

At this point, I don't know if he can practice the way he needs to to be totally prepared.

As we keep saying, competition keeps getting better, not worse.

So its like when someone eats worse and doesn't workout as much, they're not going to look better than when they had a good diet and worked out.

In my opinion he's done, won't ever win again. Sad for sure but it is what it is.

Yes 😢

Swing wise he looks alright but if he is only fit enough to play the majors, then he is just as well not playing at all. There is no way he can get his game sharp enough by practicing and practicing alone. To use his terminology, he needs reps, his leg doesn't seem like it is anywhere near good enough to physically be able to get those reps. Whilst it was so cool to watch him play 16 holes the Sunday before The Open, he looked shocking. I have never seen someone struggle to get the tee in our out of the ground like that. It might have been out of kindness but on more than one occasion, JT picked Tiger's tee up for him. I suspect that JT will know an awful lot more of what Tiger has gone through than we ever will and those little interactions where to me, telling.

I've always wondered, of all the coaches to go to, what made him pick Foley?

I understand this was after the scandal, so perhaps some coaches (or their wives, for that matter) didn't want anything to do with him, but still. Seemed like an odd choice at the time and in hindsight, you're probably correct. May not have had the back injuries.
