2023 Golf Resolutions/Goals

I don’t see any existing thread on this topic. Mods: please combine if one already exists.

What are your golfing goals for 2023?

Here are mine, in no particular order:

1. Stop throwing away shots when things are totally in my control. What I consider are in control are: missing straight putts under 4 feet, poor lag putts on flat/mildly breaking long putts, duffing/skulling chips off clean lies, missing wide fairways, missing greens with short irons/wedges off a clean lie, aiming away from penalty areas, going for the hero shot when a bad result could cost another 2 or more, etc.

2. Playing as many iconic courses as possible with my young adult son who just started playing golf, as his college & personal schedule (and my budget) permits.

3. Fix my downswing club face angle issue (square on the backswing, open on the downswing) that adds too much dynamic loft at impact.

4. Organize my golf clutter in the garage.

Work on my flexibility.  Same resolution for last 5 years.  Never did anything about it.

Our wellness center has free stretch classes twice a week (Monday/Thursday).  I did my first one last week and honestly felt like I had a massage after.  Shoulders and core all loose.  No reason to not go when it is 7 minutes from me and free.

Edit:  Not free.  Included.

Spend some money on corrective lessons and try to get my short game back.  It went MIA mid season and the current GIR rate is horrendous for my driving accuracy.  Missing over 75% and chunking far too many.

Putting is close behind, but showing signs of life with practice time invested.

Main one for 2022 was to really, really jam dial in my wedges, mostly from 40 yards to around the green. And think I did a damn good job - always work to do but the difference between now vs. 1/1/22 is tremendous. I've always been a decent (if not sometimes good) putter but a year ago; my wedges were just dismal to the point a missed green was almost guaranteed bogey and easily worse. Now; I don't even fret. I'll look at a 25 foot chip as just a good a birdie opportunity as a 25 foot putt.

2023 is when I really get my mid and long irons dialed in. This starts with STOP FUTZING WITH THE SETUPS. No more shaft changes, grip changes, swing weight changes - keep them where they freakin are. My iron play - which used to be the strongest part of my game - suffered over the last year or so and I 100% blame spending far too much time hitting off cursed mats during COVID. EE was never an issue in all my years playing till after that rotten year. I THINK I've finally worked it out over the last few months - still in that "need to stay focused" point with it but nearly automatic now. (And let this be a testament to all those making swing changes; it takes a long time and a lot of work to get right) Beyond that; focus more on target oriented approach shots. Far too often I'm just like "Ok, there's the pin - hit it there." Instead, focus on a line that will serve best to just get on the green and set up birdie putts. I'm confident enough in my putting that I expect to roll in at least one or two 20 footers in a round.

All that to say ... hit more greens, jerkface.

Try to play in 20 local tournaments.

Only got in about 6 last year as I traveled around the midwest with my oldest for junior Olympic track qualifying. Although I may end up really busy with trying to get her to state this year in high jump and following up with all the colleges that want stats and videos of her season this year.  Got to get her through law school somehow.

1. Play at least 10 new courses

2. No new clubs (I JUST got fitted for a new Driver and 3W, hybrid is set, irons are less than a year old, wedges are solid, putter is untouchable)

3. Increase posterior chain strength and overall flexibility to reduce injuries (have had game adversely affected by posterior chain tightness/weakness when I go long stretches without playing)

4. Break par at least once (did it on the front 9 this morning, finished 1 over)

I'm going to work on my ball-striking and hopefully increase my average GIR.

My ultimate hope is that someday I'm considered the best of all my group's A-players. I'm no slouch right now, but my worst rounds are usually undone by either bad driving or lackluster ball-striking that lead to some double bogeys.

I don't necessarily want to lower my handicap but I want to get the annoying 79-84 scores off my card.

The caveat here is that the answer is also always putting. I definitely need to lag it better on slopes and make more in the 5-10' range.

  1. Crack 180 ball speed (coupled with getting in shape)
  2. Clear out my old golf equipment
  3. Compete in a state or national level mid-am event
  4. Be disciplined in working on swing change started last summer

For context, start playing tournament golf in '22.

  • Get promoted to the second flight (currently playing in the third flight and .5 hdcp away from getting the promotion)
  • Continue to work on my mindsight/mentality approaching the game and play within myself.
  • Push myself to be creative and hold myself accountable to make my practice sessions valuable and challenging.

Two of my buddies joined NOOM and had a competition from October-December.

One shed 23 and the other 25 (during the holiday season). It changed their outlook on fitness and nutrition.

They would bust my chops for ordering salads (now their wives send me pics of them eating salads when they're out).

Current project is to improve my dynamic loft at impact with irons.  Also, I need to actually drill to find the middle of the face more.  I have a toe side miss far too often.

One goal - Turn off expectations.

I.e. imagine the shot, go through the routine, hit the shot, but the moment of impact turn off expectations for it, the ball is no longer in my control.

No expectations, no disappointment, mind stays free. On to the next shot.

Going to be a challenge to practice, but I think may be overall a good thing. Especially if I can teach it to my kids.

Don't sell yourself short Mello.  You're a tremendous slouch.  🤣

1. Get back to training and being ready to actually play golf. Lost count on the amount of golf I have missed the past few years due to being hurt. For whatever reason, it almost always seems to be tendons so whilst I need to get fit and healthier in general, I need to remember the little things and not just stepping into the gym to lift and be a gym bro 😂

2. The above needs to work for this one but after hovering around it and then slipping back a little towards the end of the year, this is the season that I get to scratch!

3. Tournaments, tournaments, tournaments. Last year, I played my first event in which WAGR points were available. I didn't claim any of them but getting to play for them felt good motivated me to do more.
