Spitting On The PGA Tour

Recommended Posts

Why do players feel the need to do this knowing theyll be on camera doing it.

I think its absolutely disgusting. Ive never felt the need to spit on a golf course. Theres players on the PGA tour doing it every hole.

Is it a cultural thing in the US?

Its most definitely disgusting and unnecessary.

I can see where it would be off-putting to some folks, but I grew up on the baseball diamond and it was seemingly required.

Doesn't necessarily bother me. I guess one thing that's a tad unnecessary is spitting on the actual green.

I'm assuming your referring to Davis Thompson on hole 17 yesterday? Looks like he was well off the green when he did it.

I mean I guess I’d rather not see it, but it’s an outdoor sport so it’s definitely going to happen. Very few shots are actually live, I understand the short few seconds of delay it will be shown, but when they go back to a chosen piece of tape I wonder why they don’t start after or end before?  All in all I don’t think I care, if someone says they have not/do not spit on the golf course I’d think they most likely aren’t cognizant of their own actions. I’d venture to guess everyone has and will again.

Spitting in the cup, as Sergio did, is ridiculous.  I have no issues with players spitting if they feel the need to.

Everyone spits at some point but as was stated earlier we don't have cameras following our every move.  It looks bad on tv, but again as others stated it's better then blowing snot rockets like other sports are known for.   I remember Jack Nicklaus, an avid smoker, after seeing himself smoking on tv realizing it looked really bad and he never again smoked in tournaments but to my knowledge never gave it up completely - just didn't want it shown on tv. Maybe today's pros should consider that advice and limit their spitting, etc. to off camera locations.

It depends on where and how one spits. If someone goes off to the side and spits into a flower bed, that's one thing. But onto the tee or green, big-time rudeness.

Years ago I worked newspaper down in Oklahoma, and was in the military reserves. I was playing in a military-community golf scramble. One of the local TV reporters was warming up, chawing tobacco, and lays a hawker on the practice green.

I told him he was inconsiderate and that he shouldn't do that. He got huffy, and we were never friends after that. (Uhhh, we were never friends before... I was newspaper, he was TV).

Yep, seems to have become commonplace in all sports unfortunately.

My personal favourite is the rugby player block one nostril snot-rocket. When executed properly, it creates almost a rotating barbell shape, like a space station attempting to create artificial gravity.

Where I grew up, there's what is called a farmer sneeze, one nostril rocket at a time, very effective too.  LOL I do it but not on the course.  I started spitting back, playing football.  Don't do it a lot but happens when enjoying a cigar, while playing golf, only NEVER on or around the green, as Tiger and others do on the green.

Many guys on tour still chew gum or tobacco, in lieu of cigarettes; they hope to keep it away from the camera, but sometimes the camera catches them anyway.  You want to see someone chewing gum like a cow chews cud, often spitting on camera, watch Pete Carroll, coach of Seattle.

I have been told that the PGA has a standing $500 fine for spitting on the putting green. Maybe someone that is priviliged to that information can let us know?
