I too posted this in another thread. I think -22 is certainly doable with good players. How about -27 (45) though?

Why not?  Lol.  4 plus golfers should be able to birdie half the holes and eagle the other 9, lol.

Lowest I’ve seen….no idea, don’t play in too many scrambles any more.

Lowest I’ve been a part of was 60, with two mulligans.  No strings or any other extras, just one mulligan per nine.

The lowest i've seen with no gimmicks and 4 people was something like -17 ....nothing too crazy. But i don't play a ton of scrambles and usually when i do it's charity stuff when a lot of the players are chumps.

The craziest round i've been a part of was when i shot 60 in a 3-person vegas where the total handicap had to be ~30

It was me and two 15-caps. I went 18 for 18 on greens and these guys made a ton of putts.

Were you in the comp ? Any "gimmicks" ?

So, 14 birdies and 4 eagles = -22. That gives us 5 more strokes/eagles. So a HIO could be one of them.

How many drive-able par 4s were there ? Still need 4 more eagles. Handicaps ? Open tournament (like Obee's) ?

And if there were any gimmicks - the string one sort of intrigues me. A shot misses the hole but stops within a few inches is now in.

A mulligan if a shortish eagle putt is missed by all 4,,,,,,,,, Hmmmm,,,,,,,,

Brandon Petelski. They misspelled his name, I think. He is a very, very good player, been as low as +4/+5. I highly doubt they cheated. I'm guessing there was string or something involved.

Yeah -22 is kinda the threshold where anything over that is pretty much crap (in my opinion) when doing a straight up no mulligans/string score.

I've played in some and shot in the -20 range (4 scratch golfers) where there are big calcuttas, I've seen some -21/-22s from a group of four + golfers where 3 of them all hit it 320+ and the 4th is a complete magician within 120 yards.  The idea of shooting beyond -22 (on a par 72) is pretty much a complete BS situation for me, maybe someone holes out one shot from the fairway or makes a hole in one, but the thought of doing it multiple times within a round is garbage.

Ya, it’s a fundraiser. 2 mulligans per player, and they had a compressed air ball launcher on one par 5 that gave you a short iron second shot. The course has 2 driveable par 4’s but one of them is pretty hard to hold the green unless you can hit a very high 290 drive.

What makes me question this is how large the winning margin was. No one was close.

Everyone who wins scrambles at public courses cheats. The group I mentioned beat the club pro and both his D1 sons by three and us by five.  Shockingly they won the next public scramble I was in as well.  Amazing they’re not out on the champ tour destroying Freddy and Els.

-15. Which was only good enough to get us into a playoff with two other teams, which we did not win.

I remember being the shortest hitter of that group (one guy was a former D1 athlete and could pound it 300+. The other two were 270-280). I always teed off first. I maybe missed two fairways all day that day, I was getting off the tee well. We used exactly NONE of my drives, LOL. But I like to think I played a vital part by getting us safely into the fairway so the big hitters could take a rip at it.

Best I’ve seen without any gimmicks or mulligans is a team i was on(we are all zero’s or plus HC), we eagled all 4 par 5’s, chipped in on a short par 4, then birdied the other 13 holes for a 49.

Not the lowest, but this was pretty fun to watch:

I think -21 is the lowest I've seen turned in. 9/10 times it's a little iffy, but there are some where it's a group of 30-40 somethings who know every local course inside & out and everyone in the group is long.

Also dangerous going up against all junior teams. My friends and I took two scrambles in high school and I've seen some others come out and feast on the grown ups 🙃. Dangerous playing people who live on the course all summer long.

-21

we had three 4 handicaps in their 40’s and a gentleman around 65 who was probably a 18. The only candy was each player got a mulligan and we ended up only using 3. We parred our first hole which was a short par three and then the fireworks started. It was crazy. One guy decides he’s gonna use his mulligan on a 40 foot eagle put and pours it in. On many holes it was spray right, spray left then the third guy would slam it down the middle. Then one outta four shots would be tight with the rest trash. The older  guy would putt first and kept knocking it in.
destroyed the field, everyone was muttering bs.

JT, Agreed with this. The best I've been on is a 50 and won by just one, other time a 51 was good for 2nd. Two long drivers and back then when my wedge play was sharp, all 4 of us around scratch players. It's possible to shoot a 54-55 and place out of top 4. Us better players usually know the area's good players on strong teams. Most scrambles I play on are for charity for little pro shop credit and I'm just out there to enjoy the day and beers. Calcuttas usually have two 3 man teams playing together. More money involved.

There used to be a team (H.D. you know who that is, Ha) that loves to cheat and takes unlimited mulligans when only one per person was allowed, also hold the card until everyone turns them in. I don't see them anymore as everyone caught on with their antics.

In college with four college players in the late 90's we posted 20 under par on a par 70.  Our fourth was dating my buddy and she played for UNC and got to play the red tees (4800) and hit the ball 260+ and was I believe a +1.  This was without mulligans and without any gimmicks.  The guys played the men's tees and it was 6100, we had a +3.8, a +2 and a scratch for the guys.  We eagled both par 5's and three par 4's and had three pars(one par 4 and two par 3's).  We putted for eagle 6 times, made 4 and had one hole out from 40 yards.

We turned in our scorecard and some older "gentlemen" at the club loudly voiced bullcrap.  Our fourth kindly asked them if they would like to play 1,000 a hole 4 man scramble.  They all got quiet, she told them she would even let them watch her hit balls.  She grabbed her driver and two balls from her bag and striped both down the 10th at 250+.  Turned and said, "Guys I get to play from the ladies tees, who wants to play us?"  Everyone got quiet, the jerks left, and a couple of ladies that were making the turn all congratulated her and asked for her number for lessons.

This really is the secret to a scramble. Find a scratch female golfer.

Twice I've had a D1 golfer on the team and it's basically unfair letting her play the front tees. She absolutely dominated. 2/2 with her on our team.

I shot my best scramble score of -9 (63) last weekend on a tough course especially the greens and this was with 3 low to mid teen handicaps and one 25 handicap. Except I actually set up a game plan and had everyone play a role and to their strengths, I think we only had like 5 shots where we were in a "oh man someone needs to hit a good shot" situations which they in fact did. The only other scrambles in this tournament that have been lower in past years were -13 at the lowest and from some single digit caps who didn't play this year.

But I've also been to a few where -20 "wins" and I don't really trust those so don't play unless it's for a charity a friend or family member is running.

A club back home hosts a great event every year that is a 4-person scramble and some of the very best golfers in the area play for two reasons:

1. The calcutta can be some very good coin to folks on a golf pro's salary

2. We play in 8-somes, so there is exactly ZERO cheating

It is a 2 day event and the teams in flight one will often shoot legit -16 under on a par 72 from the #2 tees.  3 par 4's are "drive-able" in that while getting on the green surface isn't necessarily an option, you can certainly get greenside and chip in.  3 out of 4 par 5's are also reachable by most, with the 4th reachable by long hitters.

I miss playing in that event, hopefully I find something similar in my new area!

Same here! Had a D1 female who also still plays LPGA events and we never even hit driver. They let her play from the red where in normal rounds, she plays the tips. We have lost a few but it is amazing not having to hit a drive all day.
