Why do you care how pretty clubs look?

Why can't you play a club with a thick top line?  Dont get when I hear it has a nice thin top line... hybrids got thick top lines and we like em lol.

 

Who cares on looks let the function sell you on using it.  All the times I've played never heard anyone comment on how nice someones clubs look just how good they might be lol

 

This goes for all sports equipment... like those people who pick a tennis racket for its cool graphics lol 🦆

Not sure the adage of top line goes along with hybrids. If it does I certainly then we should be critiquing top lines of woods and drivers 😆  

 

Thicker top lines is just as functional as offset imo. I see a thicker top line I am going to think its more forgiving, probably hollow bodied, and more ball speed. Something I welcome in a driving iron of sorts. At the same time I would not like in a scoring iron cause of those same attributes.

Currently I am playing Titleist T200 irons. I like the looks and the performance of these irons. Let me take you back 23-years. It’s the year 2,000 and I am still playing blades (Wilson Pro Staff). While playing in a pro-am with our club pro, he tells me that I am missing out on the more forgiving equipment that is available. He is playing Ping ISI irons and he hands me his 5-iron on a par 3. I tell him this thing looks awful and at 190 yards I need my 4-iron. He says, “Just hit it!”. I swing that 5-iron and hit the prettiest high draw to the middle of the green, with which he says, “They’re beautiful now, aren’t they?”. After our round, he handed me his 2-iron and 3-iron, telling me “these are the easiest long irons you’ll ever hit”. I grabbed a small bag of balls and headed for the range. The results were as he’d promised. A few days later, he fit me for a set of those ugly Ping irons that quickly won me over with their performance.

The first thing my fitter asks me about a club if I like how it looks.  He's a big believer that you'll never be happy hitting a club you don't like looking at...no matter how well it performs.

My dad was actually the head of the GM plant in Mexico that made the Aztec back when it launched. He still gets crap about it, even though his job was strictly to ensure quality manufacturing and had nothing to do with what the car looked like.

I’m definitely not part of the “tools not jewels” crowd.

 

To me, Golf clubs are like finely crafted works of art.

 

I clean mine after almost every round, and I think they’re beautiful to look at. 🤷🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️

 

I actually don’t understand the people who don’t care what their clubs look like, and who never clean them.

 

But at the end of the day, to each their own.

A few thoughts:

 

When talking about looks, I think of it in the opposite way of the OP's tennis example. I always pick the racquet with cleaner/fewer graphics.

 

For some reason, pistols and rifles came to mind to answer this question. The looks of a firearm are rarely going to have an effect on its performance. But I always pick the ones with cleaner lines, classic profiles, and as few markings as possible.

 

You gotta like looking at the tools you use.
