First Ever WRX Golf Crush ??

Oh! Wow! ... That's going back some time now!

Probably back to TheGolfChannel.com or 4GEA.com.

Probably would be 1 of 3 things:

(1) Titleist 970 Silver Top Fairway 15° | Owned

(2) Nike Miura Split Cavity Proto 2-P | Owned (2-4)

(3) Nike Forged Blade Original 2-P | Owned

I want to build a retro bag, and at the same time I don't! LOL!

There were two pretty much at the same time for me, I must have been 13 or 14 I think and it was a Scotty Cameron Tel3 and a Titleist 975D. They were THE clubs of my childhood. Kept the putter in the bag for 10+ years and the driver was in there for 4 or 5 years. I would do exactly the same as you OP, I would sit and look at the pictures and reviews on them in magazines and know that I would have to keep my head down, do all more chores and save up money to get them. I did that with the Tel3 and then got really lucky when as a combined Birthday & Christmas present, my single mum got me the driver. Honestly, just loved those clubs. I still have the Tel3 and I bought a 975D from eBay a few years ago just so that I could have one again.

THIS^ Man, I had just started playing in 88 and I was a huge Freddie fan. When I saw the Lynx Parallax irons advertised in Golf Digest I knew I had to have them. They were the first new set of irons I bought. They took like 3 weeks to get them and I thought they would never come. Loved those things!

For me it was about 10 years ago when I began exploring the world of custom shafts for the first time. My first 2 loves were the Diamana Whiteboard Flower Band and the Graphite Design Tour AD DI. I ended up with a Whiteboard which I love and still play. I am, however, continually amazed to see how popular the Tour AD still is on tour

I never did get to hit one, but the Goldwin AVDP driver was always one I drooled over. The thing just looked way ahead of it's time.

A guy down the street from us was the Powerbilt rep for our area. Had a garage full of the persimmon drivers, shiny blades and bright orange staff bags. I didn’t even play golf at that age but was gaga over the beautiful finishes on those drivers. He retired when the metal woods phase started and i bought up his last few Citation drivers. Still have em, don’t hit em.

Had a crush on Zebra putters too , screwed off the bottom plate, attached shims, washers, pennies, nickels, dimes whatever trying to get the weighting just right.

One of the first things for me wasn't a club, it was the ping L8+ stand bag. That bag seemed so far out in front of everything else on the market. Always envious when we played HS matches against the affluent schools that had them as team bags with the school name on them. While we had the lightweight jones bags with no stands. Everything in the bag was wet after the first hole of tournaments since you had to lay it on the ground and they soaked up dew like a sponge. A couple years after HS i finally picked up a used one, then I caught my first glimpse of the hoofer...

Club wise, it was Titleist dci irons. Started playing golf in High school with a set of master grip eye2 knockoffs. Got some real eye2's used during college. But always loved the looks of the original dci, and then the 962 and 962b. Finally, for my 21st birthday, my mom took me to get fit for and bought me a brand new set of the dci 990. Played those for over 10 years, then sold them to a good friend who played them for another 6-7 years and i think he has them set aside for when his son is ready for full sized clubs.

My first regular playing partner had a set of Staff Buttonbacks and I absolutely fell in love with them. I had to get some. Still got em and still love em.

After that it was Scratch blades. When they first came out some tour player had a custom set with a skull stamp instead of the Scratch "S" logo. Another must have. Still got those too. Mine don't have the skull stamp but I still love them. They're not going anywhere.

Finally it's the Staff Fg59's. Total crush but after they stopped making them. I searched for several years until finally finding a new set. Those aren't going anywhere either.

That was all several years back and I haven't had a crush on anything since. I'm a satisfied man I guess.

1st crush.... Byron Morgan DH89.

I wasn't very deep into the golf equipment world and this site opened my eyes to some new stuff for sure... but the DH89 was no doubt my first lust.

Good call on the TM Bubble and the Big Bertha woods. I am 37 and during high school golf if you didn’t have one of those, you were a second class citizen. I remember our coach got the “Great Big Bertha”...I distinctly remember between that and his alien wedge and zebra putter, we all idolized the guy.

Great question! I don’t necessarily recall the “crush” but me joining was a result of being able to afford my first new full bag after 10 years of hand me downs as a junior golfer and it was a hell of a bag of equipment.

TM Superquad 282 on an OG IP Whiteboard

Adams 4060 14.5 on an OG IP Blueboard

Built TM TP MBs on X100

Built TM TP Rac wedges

Cameron 009

It wasn’t long after I was throwing candy Oziks in the bag.

I guess the real crush was the mystique of Miura and that led me to tour issue Rac CB forged by Miura. I hit a few balls with them and didn’t like the heavy, thuddy feel of them as I was really used to forged Mizuno and the TM was soft as well.

I have come full circle and bag Miuras for the past 3 seasons.
