4 wood / 7 wood players, what do you play between 5 iron and 7 wood?

Hit em good

It really all depends on the loft of your hybrids, woods and irons. In my case I go from a 4 hybrid (which plays as my 5 iron due to the difference in lofts ) and a 22* 7 wood. The 4h goes 170 and the 7w is 180-185. You can't just buy what anyone else suggests unless you consider lofts. Just purchase either a wood, a hybrid or an iron with the loft that fits that gap you have. My hybrids are older loft models and my irons are more modern lofts. So I had to figure out gaps based on lofts not what number is stamped on the iron or hybrid.

If you know the exact distance you are trying to achieve, then just go test clubs until you find one that makes it easy to hit that distance.

I would take a few clubs:

A 4-iron that matches your 5-ironA 4-iron that is the same company as the 5-iron, but might be a chunkier (Like going to a Z585 if your 5-iron is a Z785)A 9-wood that matches your 7-woodA 4-hybrid of your choosing that is 24* of loft (assuming your 7W is 21* and your 5-iron is 27*)Then go on a simulator and see which one gives you that 175y distance you're after. Whichever club does it the easiest, put it in the bag. It's as simple as that.

As many have mentioned, a 4H sounds about perfect. I do not use a hybrid myself as its asking for a hook, but my dad plays one instead of a four iron with good success. Key is just finding the right loft for your yardage. May end up with a 5H because it gives you the right distance with the extra height/carry.

I think this is a great discussion and I'm sure by now you have your answer. Honestly, it goes by what do you swing better. I tried for years to play Hybrids, thought I could never really hit a 4 or 5 iron and never really had a 5 wood in the bag. Fast forward a couple years and I've left hybrids for good and never looked back. Recently mixed up the bag a little bit and it goes for me like this:

4w - 240ish, 7w - 220ish, 4i - 205ish, 5i - 192ish. As someone stated on here, If I'm playing a long par 3 or hitting that shot I need the carry, I'll choke down on the 7 wood and not get so aggressive with it. But if I can see I have plenty of room for run up and don't necessarily have to hit a shot on the screws, I'll pull and play the 4 iron. I like the 4 iron for those windy days, keeps the ball lower and also when you have to hit punch shots. You have no idea how much you miss that lower lofted iron until you have to punch and run a shot up the fairway from the tree line.

Right now 4W at 16* and 3H at 19*. In the past I've gone through every combination of fairway, hybrid, and utility iron between 14 and 22 degrees, but my current 4W and 3H have been an awesome combo for me.

For me those clubs are about confidence and comfort more then precision of distance gaps. I'm not hitting a lot of 195-220 shots attacking pins, and go 17d 4W, 19 3H (plays like a 20, launches higher) and 23d 4H. This covers me from 185 (soft rinky dink) to 220 at the top end I tee up the 3H. 5i is a 25.5deg P790 I target 180-185 flight on. #4headcovers
