Exactly. Under the rule, he has to cause the ball to move. He didn't. And didn't ground his putter in front of or behind the ball. Which makes it no penalty.

Decision is pretty well written, put it up Fox instead of sensationalism. Let people see the damn rule. As usual folks on here up in arms without reading the rule or the decision. Fox getting an F for this one. Tweets from players that don't know the rules mean zip.

We all know the ball moved. The question is whether the player deemed it to move. I say no. Obviously you have a different opinion. In my opinion, he put his putter down beside the ball, not behind the ball. The ball did not roll towards the player, it moved backwards. If the weight of his putter or his actions would have caused the movement, it would have moved toward the player. Apparently all the players in the field, all the commentators and most all on wrx agree.

Dont agree w how this is being handled by the usga (they should have just told him it is a penalty, so play accordingly)... But...

He set his feet to the ball, his address.

He pulled his putter inside of the ball w his set address.

He grounded the putter inside of the ball by a fraction of an inch.

He took a practice swing twice, and grounded the putter again inside of the ball.

He picked up the head and moved it forward to the ball, again w the same initial address.

As he was moving the head down to ground behind the ball, it rolled several degrees off its previous axis.

He saw it, stopped dropping his putter to ground, and pulled up out of his address.

He knew, just as any of us that has something really close to this happen before, that he was the likely cause of movement. We would be bummed, and likely not ever count the penalty, but we would know deep down inside what it was, and what the rule would be. And we would likely take that generous drop full well knowing we were just trying to get away w one. All very understandable and relatable.

But yes, not just calling it what it is, and enforcing it right then and now... Well that is another problem.

Hopefully DJ does something great and wins by 2 making the ruling irrelevant. Regardless it's silly there is this much drama... If he didn't touch it, and didn't ground behind the ball, how did he make itmove?

When they ask him what caused it to move hopefully he'll say it was because they bikini waxes the greens...

By the looks of their play right now, Piercy, Sergio, and Day disagree with the USGA too.

The USGA may be on the verge of major a terrible decision that could affect its long term credibility with the players. If Johnson says he didn't cause the ball to move, then that's the end of it. The USGA does not need to force itself into the situation to protect anything including the field. The player stated his position and consulted with a rules official - that's the end of it.

Lowry is not gollowing the script. He needs to hold it together so the inevitable DJ choke isnt rewarded with a major. DJ is hooding up his end of the bargain, but Lowry needs to stop choking himself.

At the exact moment DJ was lining up his putt there was a 6.3 earthquake in Vanuatu. Given that this is exact opposite side of the earth of Pittsburgh, this quake is likely to blame for the ball having moved.

And no, I am not kidding. There really was. (Search Earthquakes today to go to the website that shows all of them with times and all)

Almost looked like, the putter had a magnetic pull on the ball. It's like the ball moved towards the putter.

Don Cameron is to blame

when you have this waiting for your next "twosome", does it really matter what the USGA says? Life is good for DJ

I hope they rule "butterfly effect" and no penalty is assessed. That would be epic lol

Furthermore, he called in a rules official and ... Call it then or at least tell he they are going g to review post round. To wait unti 12 to put that his head is bush league.

That would depend on the slope of the green, among other things. I haven't made up my mind, but I'm not losing it, either. Not saying you are. Fay is finally reading the rule, Fox is way behind on this.

I just encourage people to read the decision, think about it and then react.

The rule is tough, but there didn't appear to be any other force acting on the ball. It had no trouble staying put until he set the putter down a couple of times beside the ball, may have pushed down a fraction too hard, who knows.
