Saw some new Callaway Woods last night (The Epic Thread)

Just hit this beast. All I can say is Wow! Ball speed was fantastic. Hit both Sub Zero and Great Big. Rogue shaft and Hzrdus stiff in each club. Play with a Motore Speeder VC 6.2 tour spec x-stiff in a XR Pro. Rouge shaft felt great did not have any lag, Hzrdus felt good also just a touch soft, but results were very good with the shaft. Love both, but Sub Zero is for me. Feel was super solid and felt like the ball exploded off the face, misses were soild feeling and keep good numbers. My Trackman numbers were better than my current set up that I love. Can't wait to have this in my bag. Fairway woods look great as does the new forged wedges. This is the real deal Game Changer

Can I just post my crown and head cover pics now or what?!

That would be great. You could probably PM a mod in the meantime to ask, but I'm guessing that they will have you wait until Greg gets pics up on the front page first.

This could all be solved if Greg goes over and takes pics of Patrick Reed's WITB, correct?

Or maybe Callaway asked him not to, just show his irons, wedges, putter, and blur out the woods.

I already asked Greg and he said no changes this week.

Well that is disappointing. Wonder why not, would think Callaway staffers would bag it this week, outside of maybe Stenson.

I'm gonna leave this boat right here.... I think Callaway might miss it

Agreed! New TM tease has 2017 M2 at over 5000 MOI and if it's low spin like this year, not going to matter what callaway does with jailbreak...

And how can we know it won't matter? Have you already tested them head to head, or there's just no way TM can be beat with all the luv you have for them? Why don't we wait and see what these new clubs are all about before making up our minds about them?

Oh I see what you did there! Assuming that I have so much distain for callaway based on my name or is it you feel I only "luv" TM! Get outta here with that garbage. It's on the same line as all the people who keep saying "TM is releasing a new driver every week" when callaway has out released them the past 3 years.

Energy transfer and low spin are great, but based on the past (SLDR/R15 vs ping G) the higher moi driver is going to do better! If callaway doesn't fix the lower moi problem they had with previous versions and the bad mishits it produced , the 2017 M2 is going to destroy it. If it's truly 2 mph ball speed, which is similar to the difference in the TM vs G clubs and lower moi people will see right through it just like they did TM and bought more G drivers. Same ball speeds and low spin + 5000+ moi? Just think about it...Ping G series on steroids!!!

In case you didn't notice, throwing PING the "luv" here...

Haha, I could care less who you give your "luv" to, but you have to admit dismissing one driver over another before even hitting them is what constitutes as the garbage here. Since you didn't answer that part of my question I'd have to guess it's a no. WRX'ers have hit both drivers, but I have yet to see a review or comment from someone who has hit both. So how can you have already decided one is better than the other?

What Greg actually said was Callaway would be working with Reed in Texas in the next couple weeks. There was no statement about not liking anything.

To have a functional driver for the masses, it's got to fight the slice

So bring it back with a closed face, or adjustable hosel. Problem solved.

Adjustable hosels and face position do not change MOI.

You probably know this, but what most people don't realize about driver design, is that the higher the MOI a club has, the higher the center of gravity is positioned causing increased backspin and undesired numbers off the driver.

There are very few drivers on the market that have a good MOI (4600-5000), and an extremely low center of gravity (below the neutral axis). Most of which, are designed by cobra.

The reason it is so difficult to achieve a low center of gravity and a high MOI is because there are limitations on the dimensions and measurements of the driver ( a measurement in relation to face width and face to back length). Just because it's a limit with perceived benefit, it isn't necessarily a good thing to max it out.

But, if your solution really is the key, why hasn't a manufacture done this in the past 8 years???

Probably because it may not appeal to the public, hence the success of the Nike SUMO driver line.

I would love to be proved wrong though, then we would all have an amazing driver.

Thank you for the posts, I went from the 915 D4 to the M2 and when I first started my fitting for the M1/M2 the ball was going way right, I'd have to attribute that to the points you're making re: MOI. I've found the M1/M2 to be extremely fade biased, which is good for most, but really wish it was more neutral.

Second question (off topic): Only watched the last few episodes of Driver v. Driver and you were the only one that was a solid golfer, which driver was better, the Triton or Pivot?

Interesting observations on the Taylormade M1 and M2 driver. Hope you found a set up that works great! I haven't had a chance to test the M2 yet.

Regarding Wilson's driver versus driver TV show on the golf channel, and I can tell you that I fall into the same category that many of the people on this forum fall into. We want a classic looking deep face driver, with adjustability, and low spin. It appeared that the pivot driver would provide those characteristics. As for why they chose the triton, there was only a five second clip on the last episode with a voiceover from Tim Clark, the president of Wilson golf, Who stated, "through all the testing that we did on both drivers, the triton came out on top every time."

I wish they had elaborated a little bit more on the testing, diving into spin rates on center shots, and off-center shots, and statistics on MOI and center gravity location, but they didn't, since most don't understand it and maybe don't care about it.

What I have to assume, is that Wilson put the triton and the pivot to the test, to find the best driver. And ultimately the triton performed better. So, it was in Wilson's best interest to provide a product that would be more forgiving and still provide spin rates and adjustability so they could make a driver great for anybody that swings it.

I didn't get to hit the pivot, but my personal opinion of the adjustability, and the visual technology, is that it was lacking in that area.

All the potential weight ports are hidden under a removable plate, which to me seems a little cumbersome. The best drivers on the market show you how you can adjust it without being told. For instance the M1, or the F6+, those drivers can tell you how it works by only looking at it. It's a very important Factor for consumers to be able to comprehend the driver's technology at first glance.

Also, the proximity of the weight location on the bottom of the pivot driver probably didn't offer as much CG movement, but the triton could with its weights located on the perimeter of the driver. So when it comes to adjustability and actually seeing a result due to changing weights, I have no doubt that the triton won there.

Performance... the pivot probably would work better for me, but that's because I might not need a higher MOI than others, and since I'm high spin, it'd probably be great. So I could potential get more yards, but at the cost of accuracy. I tried the triton and posted a review of the driver on my instagram account. The triton is just as long as anything else I've hit, but I was not pleased with the slightly shut face angle. So aesthetics aside, it was a great driver. But isn't that the case for every club... aesthetics??? I sacrifice playability for appearance every time. Hence the Cobra KING pro blades. You think I would have learned by now!

Thanks for watching the show! And thanks for your comments!

Very interesting stuff, thank you for sharing. Just going by the MPS Advanced Data, no drivers in the 2016 tests hit those benchmarks. Cobra was the closest with the King LTD (Cg Na -0.15mm and 4576 MOI).

Nice catch. I over estimated.

Asked about the Epic at my local shop tonight. The verbatim response: "It's not a Mizuno." Huge praise for the 900. Overall feel toward Epic was pretty meh.

Funny someone else mentioned the Mizuno JPX900 to me aswell recently as being a great driver for this year. And Mizuno rarely gets a lot of wood hype so i found that interesting

I'm just really interested to see real actual people start hitting this thing and hearing feedback.
