It's so funny how people get emotionally committed to a players caddie. No one talks about the trainer in football or the towel boy in the NBA

It's been a lot of years.

I played a few practice rounds with Phil early in his career.

He always wanted to play for something. Closest to the pin, chipping contests, anything to compete. I'm not a gambler, so even playing for next to nothing, just to compete was part of the. day.

We played one practice round, where it took so damned long, we were bored senseless. We switched bags, and I played left handed, Phil played righty for three holes. Bones caddied for me, my caddy for Phil.

He definitely was different in these rounds than he is on tv....to me, he was better. A smart a**, needler, know it all, and arguer.....but always competing, and having fun competing. He was a lot more fun when "off screen" IMO.

Bones was great too, and they were perfect together....they both were certain they were correct....all the time!! I really had fun with them.

My career pretty much ended around 1998. When I came back to try to play after three years, I was practicing at one of Phil's clubs. He invited me to play a few times, even invited me to another club to play a couple times. He knew things were tough, and even tried to get the Titleist guys to help me out with some equipment issues I was having. So basically, all speculation and inferences aside, my experiences as a player who was a nobody, were incredibly positive with Phil...and Bones.

Thanks for sharing some first hand stories about Phil and Bones!

I think he was right also, but, it should have been said behind closed doors, not on TV.

But behind closed doors it likely doesn't have the impact that it did. When it's out there like that, there's no burying it without addressing it.

Yep, and word was it was addressed behind closed doors. Nothing was done. Phil showed some stones and did what no one else wanted to do, and it was the right thing to do. Strong leadership qualities. Leader personalities aren't always the most popular people in the clubhouse. They will rock the boat and make waves, when some prefer to just lay low. That doesn't make Phil a rotten person. There's nothing out there that says Phil isn't a class act, on and off camera.

Caddies are treated like the holy grail in the golf world for some reason. They are always the most classiest people on earth, they are never arrogant, they never gamble, they never go to strip clubs or cheat on their wife. For some reason people always KNOW that the caddy is the nice down to earth blue-collar guy and the golfer is always the rich arrogant jerk... all from observing them in their living rooms.

Question for Rangers....

In your opinion is this parting of the ways because of Jim's knees?

I cannot imagine how much those bags weigh and lugging them up those steep inclines - wow.

Just seemed, at least for the public, that they were more than just a caddie and his player. (or vice-versa) That they were friends. Which makes this separation all the more painful for fans of both.

Thanks in advance!

Honestly Medic, I'd only be speculating. I haven't been out there in a long, long time. I am in touch with quite a few people out or around the tour, but peripherally, and I haven't heard anything.

I do know, they were more than caddy/players. It was a pretty respectful deal for both of them, from what I saw.

One mans observation, that's all.

Phi and I I didn't agree on much, debated throughout some of the rounds....and i can be pretty stubborn.

But, he would invite me to play again, even offer to help me out when I really needed it.

Something good about arguing, disagreeing, and still be able to get along....it was fun

When Bones had double knee replacement and yet came back so quickly, I had suspicions that he must be on heavy meds.

I have friends who've had one knee done and aren't right a year later.

Just a question - could Phil have made Bones stop for his health?

In my opinion I don't think you can discount the factor of the knees. Maybe they (Phil and Bones) decided not to mention the knees as a factor in case Bones has second thoughts and wants caddie in the future if he feels like it, even if it's part time.

Call me jaded but I dont believe 99% of what people write on the internet.

As always pics or it didnt happen.

Pics with what? Smart phones were just a figment of imagination!

LOL there were these things called cameras before phones had cameras. Way back, probably before you were born, some even used this stuff called film. You actually had to put this little cylinder thing in your camera and then ":load it". You could only take a few pictures before having to put another one in. Then when you finished taking pictures you took the little cylinders to a place when they "developed" the stuff in the cylinder. A few days later you had to go back and get your pictures which came on a substance similar to paper. You could then look at your pictures whenever you wanted to.

Phones also had dials on them. That is why it called dialing a phone number.

Boy do I feel old.
