Titleist 905R ... resurgence of the BEST DRIVER EVER!!!

I had a 905R, it was a fine head, but 905S has been my all time favorite. Had original Grafalloy Blue "S" tipped 1", fully inserted in my 905S.. what a club.

Played a round with the 905R NV stiff today. It is amazing how good this thing is. I really thought it would have a tough time keeping up with my Srixon 545- but no. It is every bit as forgiving and consistently long. I hit a few drives to places in certain fairways I have never been. I have always liked the NV 65 shaft. The combination of this shaft and the 905R head are perfect to me. I'm becoming convinced that new isn't necessarily better based on my experience today with the 905 and with my fairly recent switch to Ping S58 irons.

  • 2 weeks later...

This post inspired me to bust out my 905R with the GD YS+6 stiff. First driver I ever owned. All I had to do was put a new grip on that bad boy and it's been fantastic. Every bit as long as my Aeroburner Black and has been much more consistent as well.

I think I might do the same thing after work today.

Last took my 905R down to the range a couple of years ago and it was just absolute bombs with it all day long!

It's been great. I shouldn't have given up on it in the first place, but I think I've learned my lesson this time around (most definitely I haven't).

In my quest to build a travel bag for Puerto Rico, I picked up a 905R with V2 and then one with a YS6 both for $100 total. I was amazed at how well and long I hit the 905/V2. The YS6 went to Puerto Rico and I love it. The shaft is a little softer than the V2 but the feel and distance is incredible. Both drivers can hold their own.

Like a dummy, I sold the 905R/V2 and it was in excellent condition. I keep scouring eBay but can't seem to find one reasonably priced in great condition.

This is really interesting.

Does anyone have an objective review of an older driver (905R for example) against '17 hot drivers? Obviously this 905R combo is a better fit for OP, but I'd love to know what ball speed numbers are across multiple testers (or a robot) compared to new drivers. Something tells me, on average, new is better than 10 years old.

In that video comparison, the 905R had the longest carry, longest total distance, highest ballspeed and 2nd lowest spin out of all the Titleist drivers up to the 913. By my own personal feelings (and the video helps to validate that) Titleist somewhat peaked with the 905R and haven't really done anything special since. They're living off of their image.

I have a 905R in the shed, but with a 65 regular shaft in it. I am working on my golf swing, so once I have a consistent swing I will go and get fitted for the proper shaft. Currently my R11 is doing well for me. Curious to see how I'd do with it.

I picked up a mint tour issued 8.5 905r last fall. First time I ever hit a 905r, I gamed r7s in that era. I put a tensei pro white 60tx 6grams of lead on the head and it's my current gamer. Kicked out my m2 d4 and ltd pro and 282 superquad. Feel dispersion and ball flight with this head is unreal. Its as long as anything Ive hit and the most cosmetically pleasing head at address.

I have a 905S with a Graphite Design Tour AD DI-6 Stiff, fully inserted. This combination is a little too stiff for me. Unfortunately this shaft cannot be pulled without either damaging the tip or the aluminum hosel bond. I am considering boring out 2 inches of the shaft (cringe because of the cost of it) to reshaft with a stiff shaft of something. Of course I could sell this to someone who is a strong player. I am gaming a 905T 8.5 degree with UST Mamiya AxivCore Green Stiff shaft. This has been a terrific driver for me so if I don't make the switch to the 905S full time then not a huge loss. That said, I really want to get a great shaft in the 905S I have, one that I can play my normal game with. Count me in the group that really believes the 905 series was the last great Titleist driver series made.

Weirdly, I've been using 913s since they came out (driver, 3i, 5i, 4 hybrid). I know they didn't get the best reviews, but I'm sticking with what works.

I try new clubs every year .... and these are not as long as others ... but I'm always on the fairway.

I had the 905T in a Fujikura Tour Platform 26.3. Man that was my favorite club of all time. Then I got seduced by the Matrix candy shafts and ended up getting a 907 that just never felt the same.

2 days ago I was looking through my stash for a 21 hybrid I used to play and pulled out my 905T 8.5 with graffaloy blue S. Still looks beautiful...Put it in the trunk and heading to the course after work to test it out again against my callaway fit xtreme 9.5 black tie S which I have a tendency to move more right to left. Fairways ar more important to me right now than distance. Course is dry right now so I bet that 905T keeps up with roll out. I remember it being a laser....glory days.

I had a 905R 9.5 with a YS6 Stiff until the 910's came out and I switched. It knocked out the 983K. Now gaming a 915 D2 and gave the 905R to my son in law who is getting back into the game.

Still have three 904f in 15, 17, 19 degrees and have the 17 degree in the bag.

The 905R is the best looking, feeling, and sounding driver I ever played in the modern era of larger headed drivers.

That is one BEAUTIFUL looking bag. Looks like mine except for the 915D2. ;)

905R is an all time great driver. I remember taking my latest and greatest 910D3 with one of the most in at the time shafts (Whiteboard 73x) and put it up against the 905R with the stock Speeder. Both equally long and the 905R more accurate.

I assume the S was a smaller head

Here is a pic...

The 905S was a smaller head with deeper face. Definitely a low spin monster, but tended to not be as controllable. For me was a hook monster, but occasionally when I got it under control it launched some amazing bombs.

The 905T came out at the same time as the S, but was bigger (talking 400cc). It was a very good all around driver - spun more than S, and more controllable, but not as good as the R. Once the R came out, it was lights out for the T. The S retained its following due to smaller head and DEEP face.

The 905R came out about a year after the S and T, was 460cc (at the legal limit), retained that amazing Titleist pear shape. Same awesome gray metallic paint and alignment aid. Weight was lower and deeper in head, making it the most forgiving, but also very low spin for being a maximum size head. That's why I love this driver.
