Watched video comparing Flash sz vs M5 with same shafts....the sound differential was incredible!

https://www.golf-mon...#38;jwsource=cl

Thanks for the link. By far the most thorough compare of the M5 and epic flash SZ... same exact shaft with heads lofted as close together as possible. Interesting that this reviewer found the exact same ball speed. The M5 had higher avg ball speed with a slightly lower ss. Basically, they perform the same. The M5 was 1-2 yds more in carry, but that is negligible. Interestingly, you had people in this thread taking mental swan dives off rocky cliffs because of sheils' review yesterday and now this guy comes with something different.... Basically, all of these drivers are going to perform well and differently in everybody's hands.... The biggest takeaway from this review is that the epic flash sounds like an aluminum bat, or a Ping G30, which had been the rumor for a month. The M series sound really good this time around. I'd like to see a M6 review from this outfit- that's the one I'm most interested in.

When you hit the Epic Flash (mine is the SZ), it sounds A LOT like an aluminum bat. Honestly, I've not liked TaylorMade as a company, or their products for the better part of 10 years now, and haven't brought them into my proshop for resale in that length of time. But after having both product lines in hand, and attempting to play the Flash SZ for over a month now, I'm switching to the M5. I just can't play the Flash due to the sound and feel being so far from what Callaway has produced the last two generations. I'm sending the Flash back to Callaway, and going with TaylorMade this year (in the proshop for resale as well). Something I honestly never thought I'd do prior to this year.

I owned the Epic SZ and loved the sound. It just couldn't quite beat the M2 for me. For some reason, I couldn't keep it from going left. I'm sure it wasn't the club, but it's golf, and it just got mental to me. I wasn't a TM driver guy until I got the 2016 M2 in my hands.

Why worry about the sound of any of these new drivers? It’s nothing a few grams of hot melt can’t fix.

And I’m not buying any of them. My old driver works great still.

No reviews of the M5 Tour yet?

The M5 Tour doesn't get released until a month after the M5/M6 (March 1 instead of February 1). When I was out there at the end of November, the Kingdom had just gotten their first M5 Tour head. None of the Tour guys had even seen it at that point. It's a little behind the M5/M6 in terms of design and production timelines, and I believe that's why it's not yet in anyone's hands for review.

This is the only comparison I have seen at this point.....M3 440 vs M5 Tour.

Slightly lower launch in the m5 with more ball speed at similar club speed. 300 less spin m5 = more carry.

Well, one reason is that I sell equipment in my proshop. The average person/golfer doesn't even know what hot melt is, much less how to add it or where to have it added. When I've already let a handful of my customers hit it (Flash), and only one was ok/happy with the sound, it tells me that I need to at least consider that when deciding on what to stock in my shop. It does me no good if the majority of my customers don't want to play a club because of its sound.

Not trying to pick a fight. But, did you have issues selling Ping drivers pre-G400? I know I didn't give them the time of day before that. But, it was more the head shape than the sound with those for me anyways.

I did actually, yes. G30 and G were a bit slower to sell.

I have not hit the Flash fairways, no. Staff accounts were only sent driver heads that early. I've seen them, and like recent Callaway fairways, they looked good. But I don't have any experience hitting them.

Surprisingly Martin lost 20 yards with the M6 compared to the Epic Flash SZ he also reviewed and even more with the M5. From test to test his numbers are quite comparable.

Don`t know anything about test conditions, but that`s a lot.

Seriously, do some of the members on here have these types of conversations after EVERY new club announcement, every year?

Reminds me of my audiophile buddies debating the sound difference of 10 vs 12 gauge speaker wire...

13 gauge speaker wire craps over both 10 and 12 gauge rubbish.

Either you know what you’re talking about and it’s funny, or, you have no idea what you’re talking about and it’s even funnier!

Option B thanks Suby.

Would be interesting to have a technical explanation from TM about how this structural piece (green) and resin actually works.

To me it appears to only be supportive of the lower part of the face....what about the flexture of the top portion?

Perhaps it has to do with the face design and where the face flexes the most.

Very interesting.

Also interesting that each production driver will be tested for CT(COR) to provide max allowed CT...no other oem can say that.

Very nice looking driver with excellent design components....top of my list.

Agreed. From the marketing, it sounds like the face is non conforming. The resin is then added to reduce flex making it conforming but still allowing increased ball speeds on the perimeter of the face. Without seeing the cutout or the screw location, i would have thought the resin was closer to the center.

I’m looking forward to trying both the m5 and m6.

I watched the Me and My Golf video with all the tour pro reactions. They mention in the video how Tiger was asking if they could tune the heads for a hotter heel shot since he lives on that part of the face. I wonder if they will be able to get that technical for the staff? Say Jason Day wants his tuned to max CT on the toe side and Tiger wants his max CT on the heel side. New meaning to handpicked heads. Also wonder if the tour issue heads coming out will have more CT measurements on the stickers. We now have 2 but maybe more moving forward? All this is conjecture though as honestly from the really real, we know that the difference is so minute anyway it shouldn't make huge distance gains no matter how it tests out as long as its close. Still having that extra confidence will make folks want to pay for it.

These reviewers just don't get it. They're all eliminating the big misses.

That's what these drivers are supposed to be limiting. If you only show all good strikes then you've missed the point of the driver. We need to see how many times you hit it poorly and how that poor strike ended up.

I'm not sure but in their minds maybe they believe that the only true numbers are the best numbers? I'm with you, how does a club hold up under at swings knowing no one buttons it EVERYTIME!

I've already wondered that. I would suspect part of next year's marketing plan could focus on "enhanced sound and feel", similar to what we were being told ("we" being account buyers during sales meetings) about the Rogue over the original Epic during the Rogue's launch last year.

I look at all the tech and all of the haters and fans of TM drivers. I try and quiet the noise and look at the guys on tour that aren’t obligated to play TM metals but yet they do. Something to be said about that. And yes I have a TM logo in my avatar, but the facts are the facts.

Agreed. I was sold when I tried the M1 the year it came out. never have I gained distance from any other brand and now upgrading to the M5. Along with a shaft that compliments the setup, makes it an excellent driver.. Also switched to the 770 irons last year and don't see myself looking back.

Does it work?

So all of the the tech behind the new drivers is fascinating, but the important question is did I gain ball speed? Are TaylorMade’s claims legit? Did I get faster? I had some issues during my fitting, but the data shows I got faster.

For some background, my gamer is a TaylorMade M3 9.5, with a Graphite Design Tour AD GP-6s shaft, playing at 44.5”. My swing speed is 105 mph and my ball speed is consistently between 154-155 mph on center strikes, with the occasional 156-157 mph on pure strikes. For the testing, I selected an M5 460 9.0 head with a GP-6s shaft, hoping to do as close to an apples-to-apples test with my gamer as possible. Unfortunately, the only GP-6s shaft available played at 45.5”, which is too long for me.

I started the testing by hitting the 2019 TP5x (more on that later) with the M5 GP-6s combo at its full length. This didn’t go so well. Nearly every shot was struck low on the heel side due to the longer shaft. I expected the numbers to be awful, but after five balls TrackMan reported an average swing speed of 105.5 mph and average ball speed of 154.7 mph. Those are center strike numbers for my M3, so I was a little surprised.

Next I tried choking up an inch on the club, but that was even worse than full length because I lose my sense of feel when choking up (the extra shaft behind the hand feels like a counterbalance). The five shots we recorded were all centered, but struck low on the face. Here again, however, the numbers were surprising: 105.3 mph average swing speed, 154.5 mph average ball speed. Essentially, they were also numbers I see with center strikes on my M3.

At this point, I’ll admit to being a little frustrated because I wasn’t able to get a great sense of the club’s performance due to the shaft being too long. Another fitter with whom I’d spoken to earlier must have sensed my frustration because he stopped over and asked how everything was going. When I explained the shaft length situation he said to hold tight and he soon returned with an Atmos Blue 7S that played 44.5”. The change was immediate on the first ball struck with that shaft.

My strike location with the Atmos instantly reverted back to my normal spot: ever so slightly toward the high toe side of center. On the five recorded shots, my swing speed averaged 105.1 mph and the average ball speed jumped to 156.9. The Atmos wasn’t a great fit due to it being a 70g shaft, but it did its job and the shaft length centered the strike location.

Did you not have your game with you? Could you not use your GP 6S? Or does this mean the adapter tips are changed again?

I did not have my clubs with me, so I couldn't use my shaft. Prior to the trip, TaylorMade had asked for our driver specs, so I had assumed they were going to build one up the matched what we played. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case.

The adapter has not changed.

What ballspeed and smash did you see ? Can you explain the 1.55 smash and 170 plus ballspeed for 111mph swing speed the other tester showed vs what rick shields posted with same swing speed ?
