Father’s Day, what do you do?

Weather depending, it's like any other weekend. If one of my kids has something scheduled, I'll attend that. Otherwise, I play golf early in the morning, have lunch with my friends along with a few drinks, and head home for the rest of the day.

Oh hell no. I spend the two weeks prior reminding the kids that Mother’s Day is coming and to try to make plans to do something with their mom. She gets way butt hurt if something like that gets forgotten. Takes it as a personal insult. Father’s Day or my birthday, I’d be just as happy if everyone would overlook it.

Until last year, the last many, many years it's been brunch with the wife and daughters after church, golf with my dad and oldest daughter, some sort of grilling later in the day with everyone and catching U.S. Open as we can. Last year it was brunch looking out at Royal Dornoch with my wife and two daughters, golf at Royal Dornoch with my wife and two daughters, and later my oldest daughter and I walking back up to the clubhouse to catch the last hour of the U.S. Open in the company of the gentleman who was my caddie earlier (and who later in the evening invited us to play with him as his guests later in the week). So, hard to top that.

This year will spend most of the day with Monte Scheinblum, so that will be fun, I mean no way that could go wrong, lol - wife and at least one daughter will be available later for dinner!

Seems like the day my oldest was born it was like i got b*$^#& slapped by the hand of god and heard the words "life aint about you anymore". Now i feel guilty if any special plans are made on my behalf. Usually we all have a relaxed day around home, play with the kids all day, burn some steaks on the grill and eat din on the back deck. My bonus present is hopefully get the kids to bed early so i can go enjoy a quiet peaceful twilight round and just be thankful for everything i have. Now that i think about it thats exactly how my dad did it when he was alive except i went to the course with him for that twilight round. Hopefully when my kids get old enough they will want to join me.

Father’s Day is by far the best day of the year. Normally I work that morning (in a pro shop) and get off by 1:00, head home and put on the US Open final round and veg for the rest of the day. My adult daughter will normally come over and hang for a few hours. We’ll call from pizza or throw something on the grill...yeah, I pretend Father’s Day is about me, but really it’s about us. Father’s Day is awesome!!!

I get it OP but usually I would not play on Father's Day..maybe day before. I do ask to chill...maybe grill..and watch PM slap it whilst running after it. :D

I’ve decided this year, thanks to the feedback that I’m going to play Saturday morning and spend Father’s Day morning with the wife and kids. I remember last year that I took the kids with me to a par 3 and it was HOT, packed and completely unenjoyable. If I spend the morning and early afternoon with the family, I may, I repeat may, get to watch the US Open afterwards.

I have a big family, four older sisters who are all married with kids. I myself am also married with a 5 year old. My wife works weekends and my mom always keeps my daughter Saturday nights/Sunday mornings. So I usually get my weekly round in on Sunday morning with my normal group. No different on Father's day, but instead of spending the afternoon with my mom and daughter before heading home before my wife gets off work our family usually has a giant cook out to celebrate all of the dads. I am also the only golfer in the family which is kind of funny when I insist on watching the US Open.

huh, I used to be active in both my sons lives when they were young and needed me. Baseball coach, football coach traveled every weekend in the fall. Wrestling, track & field parent. Seems we did it all, Then one day they got their drivers license's and they were scarce. I couldn't even get them to cut the grass they were so busy with their lives. I remember sitting in the stadium for my oldest graduation and how proud I was. One month later he was off to basic at Pendleton. He served three tours in Iraq and two in Afghanistan, awarded a purple heart and there wasn't a day I wouldn't pray and ask for one more day. My youngest is a wild lands fire crew leader. In California that's a career. He is recently married at 31 years of age and both he and his new bride are presenting the world a new arrival this December. I'm proud of my children and even tho I have regrets about how time cheated me with my boy's, I'm gonna spoil the hell outta my grand child and take him golfing as soon as he can toddle along. Life's short teach your children well.

Gentlemen, I am in the eye of the storm so to speak. Here’s my May / June schedule for you:

Stepdad, stepmom, sis in law birthdays. Mother’s Day. Wife’s birthday. Daughter’s birthday. Anniversary. Father’s Day.

It goes in that order, except that my daughter’s birthday, our anniversary, and Father’s Day all often fall on the same day, or usually the same weekend. So you know where Father’s Day falls in that pecking order. Usually, we just have to find some random day in the middle of June that we don’t have other plans to “celebrate” Father’s Day.

The biggest “killer” in all of this is that my wife, who is a great wife and deserves most of it, has pretty high expectations for her presents, etc. I can’t get away with combo gifts. I can’t get away with combo dinners. So 3 major celebrations of her occur within a few weeks of each other, and every year I have to find some way to impress her on those 3 days with gifts I haven’t gotten her before. And she has a list of about 5 restaurants that she “has to go to since it’s her birthday month “ and none of them are cheap. At all. So what usually ends up happening is exactly what is happening this week. We haven’t had time to hit but 1 or 2 of them, so we try to squeeze them all in toward the end of May. So we are going out 3x over the next handful of days to expensive dinners. Not to mention that many of her favorite stores / brands send her “birthday gifts” which are really just discounts designed to encourage her to go out and shop and spend more money. And she just “has to take advantage of these discounts because you can’t get them any other time of year. “

So now back to Father’s Day. I’ve gotten where I just ask my wife to not buy me anything, and to try to be ok this year with something, anything that makes it easier on me with all of the “celebrating her” stuff. Of course, that makes her a little annoyed. So I end up spending half my life savings anyway on some jewelry that she absolutely doesn’t need, and we end up trying somehow to squeeze in a Father’s Day dinner (where I usually pick a place that the family will be happy with to keep the peace). I mentioned before that I’ve mostly stopped requesting golf time because I do tend to want to spend that day as much as possible with my kids.

Once the 3rd week of June hits, I’m usually good until Christmas (thank God!). And I can’t complain too much...I played golf 3x last weekend. So it’s all good. But boy am I eager to get all of this over with once again.

All of our kids are grown and live far away, so Father's Day isn't such a big deal any more. Cards, phone calls and Facebook greetings give me the warm and fuzzies for a while, but it's not the same. Enjoy your kids while they're still home. Let them spoil you (or let them think they are).

I feel that Mother's Day sets the expectations for Father's Day. What I usually do is to assume that I'm "on duty" all of Mother's Day weekend. I use Saturday as my day to thank her, then Sunday as the kids day to thank her. On Saturday my wife has an "off day", usually in the form of a sleeping in, naps, shopping, movie, paint & sip, etc. Then Sunday is brunch, family movie, beach trip, etc.

That usually sets the expectation that when Father's Day weekend comes, I'm fine with "family" time and "off" time, but the idea that Father's Day is "dump the kids on dad and have a mom's day off" is a no-go.

For guys who don't see their kids every day (divorce, etc), the "gift" of spending the whole day/weekend with the kids seems appropriate. I'm with mine every day... my "gift" is time off, or at least an activity that my wife has planned and I get to just enjoy the family.

I typically play golf with my dad some time during the week before or after because he would rather do nothing at all and watch the US Open the day of. Like, doesn't even want to be bothered on that day. For my girlfriend's father, we typically play golf in the morning at my club, have a casual lunch after while watching golf and then head to somebody's house to grill out and watch the rest of the US Open. All said and done, things work out well and everybody ends up happy.
