That's how excellent golf is played. What would make them less boring?

Don't actually mind the whole handicap idea so long as no-one pretends it's an actual tournament in its own right. The "winner" might get five years' exemption based on the season's body of work but no official "win" as such.

>

> But the points as they stand are way out of whack, as many other posters point out. My humble suggestion:

> * Majors: Masters, US PGA, US Open, The Open - 1000

> * WGCs, Players', Playoff series (Western Open, GHO): 600

> * Tier 1 TOUR events - Bay Hill, Colonial, Memorial, Charlotte: 500

> * Tier 2 TOUR events - the rest except opposite-field events: 400

> * Tier 3 TOUR events - opposite field events: 350

>

> To extend the process, let's set the secondary (currently the Korn Ferry) Tour events at, say, 350 points (the same as the opposite-field events), and have both TOUR and KFT points carry over into their Finals series. Those events could be 500 point events. Anyone on the KFT that scores points on the TOUR or in the Majors keep those points to count towards The 25/ Finals/ Next 25 qualification.

> Thoughts?

>

Mentioning the minor league Korn Ferry tour invalidated your whole post and point.

Watching today made me realize something ridiculous - I enjoyed the chaos last year. Not knowing who was where at what point in the tournament made it more exciting. Players genuinely just had to go out there and put up scores and had to cross their fingers for those around them to make a mess. I liked that. I may be the only one hahaha

You’re right about no one taking the Super Bowl seriously at first, but it only took until Super Bowl III and Joe Willie Namath to change that.

The problem with giving strokes is it actually effects who win the Tour Championship (tournament) not just the playoffs which points only effect. As other have said, should the tournament count a tour win now since it is handicapped? I would argue no but nobody cares what I think.

I never got to see any of it last night (totally forgot that I had a work dinner) but looking forward to getting the chance to sit down with it tonight. I wonder if it might be easier to adjust to the scores now that the first round is done and the tournament has started proper.

It felt really flat to me.

I've said it numerous times now I think its a smart way to wrap up the Fed Ex Cup but I hate the idea of a player winning a handicapped event (The Tour Championship). Then add in the fact that OWGR are awarding points based on the unadjusted scores which makes no sense at all as the leaderboard in the OWGR sense could have players at the top who have effectively played without pressure due to the handicap. The Tour Championship is now mess of an event just ditch it and call the Fed Ex Cup Finale with the players playing for that alone.

It is obvious from the posts on here that golf fans will never be happy. Look at the threads from last year, endless complaining about needing a mathematics degree to keep up with points and projected standings. We had announcers on TV every 5 minutes with 'updated standings' and analysis over "if he makes this putt he could move to #5".

This year they squash all that and just go to a simple stroke based system. You can look at it and instantly know where the player stands. Par for the course, many are unhappy and portray it as the worst thing in history.

To be fair, as a golf obsessed kid I was quite happy watching when the season used to run into November and it was just the Money List that everything was based off. Ever since that changed with the FedEx Cup and then the Fall Events it has all seemed slightly contrived.

IF you were living in an American Football League city, you took the Super Bowl seriously right from the start. And, by the way, the 1964 Buffalo Bills would have roasted the Green Bay Packers.

The new format won't get really interesting until a favorite/popular player comes from way behind to win it. Unfortunately, I don't think this course is conducive for incredibly low scores so it's tough to get those explosive 61s or 62s. My belief is that the FedEx Finale should be on a par 72 golf course with just as many birdies and eagles on the course as there are double bogeys. I just think East Lake tends to make players play a bit more structured and there aren't very many "risk/reward" holes.

Fedex cup is just dumb, in my opinion. In almost every other sport, there's a culminating event that teams or individuals want to win to say they're the best. Golf has four with the major championships. Fedex cup is just like watching rich people get richer. It feels more like an appreciation event for the best players than a year-end championship.

I think the best format would be to make wins during the regular season more important. Make the second win multiply your points by 1.5, then the third win by 2, etc etc. Would give players way more incentive to play more events. Make East Lake a masters-esque type field. After the events played, just name a winner, and the best player of the year, hand them a check for 10 million and be done with it.

The "playoffs" are a joke. The "championship" itself doesn't seem to mean anything. No ones careers are going to be measured by Fedex Cup championships, or at least I hope not until they get the format figured out.

Maybe they should just make East Lake insanely difficult, and have a cut every day of the tournament. Make it an event where the best player has to grind out a + score to win it, to truly show who's the best. Get rid of the playoffs though. Dumb that those tournaments seem to have more weight than the majors.

Oh come on now...I’m sure they would’ve missed a field goal to lose lol

I think they need to find a more interesting location. East Lake is a boring track. I am sure it is a wonderful course, and I would love to play it, but it is a visual snooze button on screen. They need a tight mountain course for this event.

haha, While I would love that. No, I am not. But I am advocating for more "like" that. I would love to see some events up in the northwest as well.

> Forget the format for a minute. Who is the most deserving winner? Imagine that this tournament magically identified the guy who had the best year. Who would it be? Koepka? McIlroy? Kucher? Other?

I think the secret to appreciating this tournament more is to forget the notion that this series of events (the FX play offs) are designed to identify to best golfer of the year or the number one golfer in the world. I think that any serious golf fan can work out the first and the OWGR take care of the second, which makes the answer to your question......Koepka.

The whole Fx series and the the play offs are just a show case for the PGA Tour and as for the TC, I have already forgotten about the handicaps and I am comfortably taking the scores on the leaderboard for what they are. I am also quite confident that from this point on I can just treat this event as any other golf tournament, all be it with a rather stellar field.
