2020 TaylorMade SIM and SIM Max drivers (in hand photos, M5/M6 comparison pics)

I got to demo the new SIM driver last night. I think the looks and feel are an upgrade from the M5. As far as performance, I liked it, but it didn't wow me.

I tried it with Hzrdus Yellow 6.0 75g shaft in a 9* head, and the whole time I was thinking I needed more loft just based on what I was seeing with the CG2. I was hitting it in the face the whole time with a TP5, but I never hit one that just felt crushed. I don't remember all the numbers off the top of my head, but if I remember to take pictures comparing my M3 to the SIM, I'll post them here.

I currently play a 9.5* M3 with a Speeder 757 Tour Spec shaft in a stiff flex with an extra 8 gram weight in the head at 45", so I'm sure that played a role in my initial thoughts on the driver. I have all 3 of my weights lined up in the center of the Y track towards the front. The weight placement on the head of the SIM just felt weight to me...not bad. Just weird/different. I'm going to compare my driver set up on Saturday to the SIM, in both the 9* and a 10.5* head with my Speeder in each head.

Really interested to hear your findings.....I'm in a lofted up 9.5* M3 but not xtra weighting....I'm thinking that front track Ala SLDR keeps cg lower and more forward than they are expressing ....even with inertia modulation turbulence gravitational thingy on the back!

You may prefer the Ventus Red which is made for those with a lower trajectory. It isn't a "sky-high" type shaft, but built for good players with lower launch.

My younger brother is a teaching pro in Northern CA and has hit the SIM and is a fan. Mentioned how it sits more square when grounded compared to previous TM offerings. Both of us were not fans of how much our current gamers want to roll open when grounded (him an M5, me an M4). I’ll probably move into SIM instead of SIM Max as I can loft up and close the face a bit (I’m a cut player, so I like the face closed some).

Start with Ventus Blue and try Red. I’m a high spin player and Blue is fine for me so like MCoz said, while Blue is their “Mid” flight shaft and Red is “High” those descriptions are subjective as I’d call Blue more of a “low-mid” shaft in reality. Big fan of the Ventus line, the Velocore works. Bit unfortunate to see Fujikura put out made-for shafts with same name and coloring that aren’t real deal with Velocore. Makes it really confusing for aftermarket folks but I’m sure the ebay grifters love it (not a dig on ebay, I buy most of my used shafts there).

A question kind of out of the blue. Knowing lofts and face angles are never perfectly on, Is there a way to get a driver head with the exact number a person is looking for? I understand there is some changes a guy can do to with the changeable adapters but If I wanted a specific loft and face angle where do I go? Thanks

PING are the only ones I know of where you can pay like $12 extra on your order and ask for a specific loft. They will sort through their heads and try to find one that fits what you ask for. Other than that, you can buy "Tour Issue" Taylormade heads from some club builders that will have a sticker on them that will list the exact weight, loft, face angle and lie angle. There are a lot of Taylormade fans that will only go this route and I can see the appeal, but they are super expensive. You can find Callaway 'Tour Issue' heads at some places as well, but there seems to be more of an established after-market for Taylormade Tour Issue heads.

There could be other ways, maybe ask in the club-making forum.

Gaming the Sim Max with a Ventus Black and it is definitely a monster. Came from a M5 and have seen a pickup of club head speed and ball speed. It’s not HUGE, but it is across a large sample size; about 1 mph clubhead, I’m around the 115 - 117 range on trackman and low 120s on GC QuadI’m pretty centered to very slight high toe on strikes and consistent. The other thing I’ve noticed is that even the Max is Lower spin than my M5, although that is partially Shaft and hot melt related

You would have to get your hands on a tour head that has been digitally measured, someone like Will Peoples will get them

Also lie angle with a driver I think is much more variable. Considering the bottom part is round, and some people like to sit it more toe up or down than others. I think the driver head can be bent a little right? I wouldn't but probably can be done LOL.

Current shafts that are fine for me are, in order of best fit, synergy blue 60 stiff(was in M5), Tensia orange 60 series stiff(in 410 plus), synergy has been fitted w/ ping adapter. Thanks again

I can confirm this was the case for me. My M5 spun open when soled on the ground, whereas my SIM sits more square.

I I was original drawn to the SIM because I like more adjustability, but I am thinking the same as you. The MAX is very stable, it also has a slightly deeper face then the standard SIM. I was shocked at the ball speeds I was getting last night when swinging them both. The MAX is jut more stable. You will most likely want to go higher in loft regardless of which head you decide. For me, both were fairly low launching and being a bit of a low ball hitter to start with. I am going 10.5.

I tend to strike the ball very level. I can be anywhere from plus 1 to negative 1 in path. If you hit way up on the ball you may be OK with sticking with a lower loft, but I need the loft the get my launch in a better window. The spin still stays down.

When you say stable, do you mean forgiving?

Correct, more forgiving. Higher MOI to resist twisting. I tend to hit a draw but would love love love to be a fader.

Did you toy with the front weight in the sim yet?

I'm a fader and my concern with sim.max and mavrik is not being able to tame the fade. I was in m4 before m5 and I started to lose m4 right too often.

Without adjustability, I fear having that again. I'm center to center-toe on strike. Assuming sim and sim.max are fade biased, I can move the sliding weight in sim toward the heel to reduce fade spin. Can't do that if max and mavrik are already fade biased.

I did, it seem to work some, it is hard to say for sure on the adjustments. Is it real, is it placebo? The one draw back for me. is that I love the callaway hosel. it is the best in the industry in my opinion. I like that you get adjustment and the shaft and grip do not move. TM needs to find a way to design a hosel like that.

I'm still drawn to the SIM due to the slightly smaller face, and potential for a tad more speed, but definitely agree that most people would benefit from lofting up in these drivers.

Curious about the standard shaft offerings in the SIM.

I currently play a OG HZRDUS Yellow 6.5 60g in my Epic Flash SZ.

Im going to order the TM Sim this week and noticed you can get the Smoke Green as a standard offering. From what I know about the Smoke Green, it’s supposed to be stout. Would I be fine sticking with a 6.5 60g in the Green or should I move down to a 6.0 in everyone’s opinion. My SS is 105-108. Or potentially look into a different shaft offering all together? Haven’t hit the Green.
