A complete narcissist vs. having some narcissistic tendencies (or high self confidence, you know, the good narcissistic tendencies) are two different things. There are narcissistic tendencies that are not good as well. Almost every pro athlete has narcissistic tendencies(some have the good ones and the bad ones mixed or just good or just bad), they have to for the utter belief in themselves to succeed. A true Narcissist has a fragile ego or self-esteem so they try to inflate their own self worth.

Tiger Woods does NOT have an exaggerated sense of self-importance. I've never heard him exaggerate his achievements or talents, I've never heard him put down others to make himself seem better, I've never heard of him using other people to get what he wants. Tiger completely believes in himself and for the most part I imagine he couldn't care less about what others think about him(exception being his family). He has the good narcissistic tendencies. Some of the same ones that successful people tend to have.

On the other hand PR, thinks he is a top 5 player in the world, he has put down others, he has used other people, he expects special treatment, he behaves in an arrogant manner (boastful). He has some of the bad narcissistic tendencies.

This is wife’s baby sis. From a sheltered home with 2 parents etc. college educated person. My wife is exact opposite. She has a masters in English lit ( I forget the term exactly ) and instead of teaching ended up going back and becoming an in-house accountant who reconciles $2mil plus a month in business. And she accounts for every penny ... lol. Everytime. Even to the point of catching her old boss siphoning millions over 10 years. And having her locked up. It’s like they both got disproportionate parts good and bad. Lol. Needless to say even with trapping a guy with a child , she has no husband. Ever.

 

Now my brothers. Yea. They’d marry her. lol. That’s how lovely my families are.

Ah, makes sense now and I feel your pain. I dated a chick like your sister-in-law for awhile in college. Thank god she had the good sense to sleep with all of my friends before anything serious happened!

I don't think Tiger is narcissist. A narcissist has a flawed view of one's self. Exaggerated self-importance, exaggerated thought of skills, self-entitlement, exaggerated achievements, fantasies of success, etc. It is safe to say Tiger has earned his following by his phenomenal golf. Also, Tiger is not the "look at me, look at me" person and is extremely private except for golf. I would even say that about Reed or any golfers making a living playing golf. Reed is one of the best golfers in the world. Narcissists are more people with no skills that have grandiose thoughts that they are incredible. Nowadays with social media and participation awards, it is creating a ton of "look at me, look at me" narcissists.

Narcissist can have skills. But they over inflate anything they do and always think they are the smartest (genius ; ) and the best at everything. Bullying and putting down people is another trait. TW does not have those.

 

Where TW has been a narcissist is in lack of empathy for others. Obviously in his marriage. But even being such a cheapskate and crappy tipper. This could be, in part, that he expects no empathy from others. Either way, it's a bad trait and hope he sees this.

It exists to some degree in all top tier athletes. One of my favorite quotes was Michael Jordan. After putting up incredible numbers in a come from behind win, he was walking off the court, when an Assistant Coach for the Bulls told him "Excellent job Michael, but remember, there is no "i" in team". Jordan didn't miss a beat, he responded, "But there is in WIN isn't there".

lol. Yep. I have more stories. As I think. But none G rated enough for here. One hint is the time she had came into the house at a kids birthday party. I asked “ where’s so and so “ ? She says “ him and blank are out back sparing for the first right to my affection “. I cleaned that up , The actual quote was the most slang / crass version of that possible.

unsolocited helped quite a bit in my return to playing after injury when I returned to playing some in Australia

after 3 years away with a serious injury was amazing and got me hooked up with the main guy at Titleist to resolve some equipment issues

 

so my personal experience, three guys I was friendly with (wouldn’t say friends that’s a big statement) took it upon themselves to help me out without any push from me

There’s narcissism in any sport. But, having worked with execs, coaches and athletes in different sports and having worked with players, coaches, caddies, etc. on Tour I have found the PGA Tour to have the least amount of narcissism of professional sports.

 

The players may act a little neurotic at times, but logical behavior and highly competitive golf do not coexist 100% of the time. In the meantime, the players I’ve worked with readily acknowledge that they know they are supporting not only themselves and their families, but their caddy’s livelihood and the impact their performance has the reputation of their instructors, mental coaches, etc. 

 

Almost all of the players give back to charity in tenfold. They don’t have to do it, but they do because they see the opportunity to make a positive difference. I have Tour players that are members of my home club and they are extremely friendly and gregarious, even with the 25 handicap who works a blue collar job.

 

I don’t see many of them acting like they are entitled and at worse, they are usually just a case of people that are very tired from their schedule and have a tough time dealing with crowds. 

 

Don’t let a few bad apples spoil your view.

I just have to lol @ the people who think giving to charity justifies someone as not being a narcissist. Plenty of narcissists use that route to improve their public image.
