just put srixon 545's in the bag today. replaced Titleist MB/CB combo. Don't have a comparison yet but excited to see the difference. hdcp +.5

545's are great sticks, but far from SGI.  I'd almost classify them as a Players/GI hybrid, cause they are still a pretty compact package.

I believe someone here recently went with the PXG SGI with success.  I dabbled with the SGI, without success.  They were simply too large for me, and I could not hit them consistently at all, at least in the 5 and 6 irons that I tried them in.  YMMV.

Best thing I've ever done! I've been playing a cb/mb combo set and loved them, but on a whim came across a set of jpx 919 hot metal pro's and gave them a shot and fell in love. Its laugh out loud funny when you toe the hell out of a 6 iron and it goes 187 instead of 190. Scores have been pretty similar but the round seems like so much less of a grind. I know they aren't SGI but it's a great option for a super forgiving iron. It has very little/no offset which is the #1 thing about gi irons that turns me off. i will probably make it a combo set with maybe the 919 forged, but the distance and forgiveness in the long irons is unbeatable. i feel just as confident with a 4 iron on a 210 yard par 3 as a 9 iron on a 150 yard par 3. I 100% recommend giving it a shot.

Probably better off with the PXG Gen3 XP that replaced the Gen2 SGI model.  Simply looks more like an iron...Perez plays them in the long irons.

But they are cheaper for sure.

OR wait for the Jan. release of the latest PXG iron/woods!!

I am around 6 and was 4 (don't know whether it should be called as low handicap...) and I played full hybrids from 3 to PW (guess they are a fair set of SGIs)

The current WITB has been changed a bit.

I play what lowers my score most. After some really low rounds, my clubs start to look very purrrrty in the bag, regardless of what they are.

I bought the 6-SW set of PXG Gen 2 SGI irons. Elevate Reg

I don’t carry an official cap but shoot anywhere from 77-85 most days.  Short knocker. 44 yrs old.

I play a 5h and always seem to struggle with my 6i. I found the 6i to be probably the best 6i I’ve tried in terms of ease of use, launch and consistency. But I like to play set wedges down to a SW and I struggled with the SGI wedges. If I played the ball back in my stance like I normally do I kept hitting them Fat. If it moved the ball forward I hit them short of my usual yardage. So I sent them back to PXG for a refund.

I do miss the 6i and their look. Yeah they are bulky but I love the satin clean look. Cleans up great. I play the Cobra Trails now and the black finish wear bugs me.

I’m actually considering a 6 and 7 SGI and 8-Gw set in the Gen 2 Xf’s.

SGI vs. "players" vs. players GI..... The factors in play are the same for everyone - performance, looks, feel, forgiveness, distance - but they are stack ranked and weighted differently for everyone. Some people are driven by feel/looks, or performance/scoring, or performance with a bit of feel/looks factored in. Scoring/performance are higher on my list than my friends with blades, that's fine, it's whatever the player values more (even if they won't admit it!).

I tell anyone who's asking me for club advice to get the "most forgiving iron they're willing to look at". I'm willing to bet there are SGI's out there with characteristics that fit "players" - thinner sole, less offset, etc.  Heck, I dropped my 5i this year (Apex '19), which is not demanding at all, in favor of a 23* hybrid that I can launch in the air like a PW.

Go for it, take the time to adjust if needed.

Blades/small players CBs just have more feedback. A bad shot feels worse but isn't drastically different in terms of result. Launch can come down and I feel like that is the main forgiveness difference.

Look at the charts in the below video. Ball speed drop off is the same with blades/CBs to SGI. I can hit anything. My buddy plays G400 - I hit them fine. My dad plays 545/745. Hit them fine. Hit my blades well. A good swing is a good swing. Bash it off the toe, fat it, thin it, result won't be great. Couple yards from one another maybe.

Dealbreaker for me with SGI is that the ball comes off with less spin and it’s impossible to flight them low. Fine for low lofted irons though.

Why do low handicap players who play GI irons always flock towards the ping G?  What is so special about them?

You are describing me. I have played blades most of my golfing life, but will go in on a set of GI irons every couple of years for kicks.  It is ALWAYS the latest G series.

For me, it is just a perfect GI iron. It is an iron that packs a lot of technology and GI traits into a profile that is pleasing at address. Ping doesn't go off the rails with it's design and aesthetics, and I genuinely love the way they look and feel. I am a forged iron guy for the most part, but, if you asked me to choose an iron set for life, I would choose a G series iron. Just an outstanding, timeless product that you know will do what it was designed to do.

Not a very low HC, but went from a 7.6 to a 4.1 this year. I picked up a set of G710's and won't be looking back. Yes, there is offset and yes, the sole is wide, but I've never struck anything nearly as good as these (especially playing in generally wetter conditions where I need a little more bounce). Heel them - straight, toe one - straight. Never really liked the look of SGI irons, but the black stealth like finish on these look great. PVD isn't the most durable material so we'll see how they hold up in the years to come, but so far so good. They're super confidence inspiring and the best thing about this set is the distance and dispersion. I love Ping because they're notorious for building quality equipment.

I completely agree with some of the comments.  The biggest issue I had in the past is with decent clubhead speed, the GI clubs just launched WAY too high and spun too much to be helpful.  As I have been pretty steep as well, the wider soles just don't work well in firmer turf.  I am around a 4 index

However, the concept of GI and SGI have really evolved with many of the clubs mentioned here.  I still find it interesting as some tour player are playing i210s vs the blueprints.  T100 vs MBs, etc.  If they are playing the more forgiving clubs, why do I think I should play something less forgiving?

I play off 5 so not super low handicap but I am a pretty good ball striker. I have had the srixon 565's in the bag for years now, they're not quite sgi but definitely super forgiving. The main reason I haven't replacement is because the thicker soles seem to interact with the turf better than any thinner ones for me.
