I hate to admit this, but ....

@Obee I want to disagree with you. Just on principle. Alas, I find that I can’t.

Despite not caring for how BD and Spieth carry themselves on the course, I admire the way they play the game and own their games. Same goes for Reed, complete scum, in my opinion. But man it’s fun to watch check him move his ball around the course.

You’re mostly right, but there’s no one I’d rather watch than DJ right now.

You know, that was really not correct of me to say. I do, actually, like to watch DJ play, quite a bit. And I love his idiosyncratic swing, too.

... I truly love to watch DeChambeau play the game. I so appreciate that he plays his own game, completely unafraid to do things differently in his quest to play the very best golf that he can play. I don't care for his personality (either on or off the course) much at all. He's whiny, ticky, and just too odd, even for an oddball like me! But I would much, much rather watch him play then DJ, or Rory, for instance.

As for watching the pros, I'd say my top group to watch are:

  • Tiger
  • BD
  • YJS:  Not at all a fan -- just like the way he plays the game. Always interesting to watch his rounds
  • Berger: Jjust love that swing! -- All his!
  • Patrick Reed: Can't stand him, but love to watch him play the game -- other than massive length, such a complete player

I was going to agree with all except DJ but you digressed!

I like watching DJ play. I love his demeanor and his laid back attitude. I went out of my way to watch DeChambeau hit his drive on 6 last Sunday. Very cool. And I've found golf the last few weeks to be pretty exciting to follow for basically one reason. Spieth is playing half decent golf again. I feel like he just has something about him that reminds me a bit of Tiger. Watching Tiger was always fun for me because at any moment he could pull off just an incredible shot. Spieth has a bit of that about him. 100% on board with your thoughts on BD - not a fan of him as a person (he's young and may sort that out over time), but watching him play is impressive. He drives it so far and still hits a good amount of fairways. He's also not afraid of playing what looks like outside the box routes to the hole. Tremendous fun IMO.

I disagree.  I really like watching Rory and I like lots of other guys too. Berger is fine by me and so is Spieth.

I don't like watching:

  • Tiger- (prior to the car accident, of course)- He was great 20 years ago but I didn't like the fist pumping then and I don't care for it now.  Act like you've been there before. He was also horribly slow on the greens.
  • Reed- Cheater
  • DeChambeau- Whiner
  • DJ- I could play an entire hole in the time it takes this guy to make one putt.
  • Phil- He's playing poorly nowdays, but I think he's a shady guy.
  • Kuchar- I think he's a jerk.

I'm a lefty and not a Fan of Phil......respect his accomplishments but too risky of a player and VERY full of himself.

Sergio and his tantrums (shoes, cup spit etc) are turn-offs.

Whiners don't bother me but chatty types do......I like the intensity of a Curtis Strange,  the genius that is Tiger, the consistency of Jack and DJ and BD has more overall game than he's given credit for .

Norman is a putz btw and Rose has just lovely tempo .

Since the last Ryder Cup just don’t pay much attention to Reed (but will defend him against BS cheating claims, lol).

For the most part I agree with your statement on people you like to watch.  Other than Patrick Reed I like the way YJS and BD conduct and carry themselves.  Why is a player's commentary or assessment of their game/shot a whine?  I'd also throw in Colin Morikawa in there.  Stone cold killer imo.

YJS has been in a horrible funk, has to answer questions about said funk endlessly, but I've never heard him piss and moan about poor play.  I like that.  Sergio overdoes the "oh, poor me".  BdC overdid the scientific meme, but, damn, he can play.  Don't know how he does it, but he's more than just a long ball guy.

Well written Obee! I concur with all of it. BD is putting his heart and soul-and body- into being the absolute best golfer he can be. Not all of them do that.

I would add Webb Simpson to the list. He looks like one of us(a bit of a funky move) and yet has one of the most efficient games on tour.

I liked Bryson the "mad scientist." It was quirky and a little self-absorbed, but it was different in a good way and I kinda enjoyed it. I dislike this new Bryson...he comes across as a meathead frat bro now, which is kind of the opposite of the otherthinking mad scientist. His exaggerated wrestlemania celebrations and just the look of his swing. It's off-putting.

That said, I don’t know him at all and my read could be all wrong. And whatever he's doing, it has helped his game so you can't knock that either.

Well said. I do find myself enjoying the quirky players more and more. The guys that are borderline headcases like Matsuyama, Bryson, Na, Spieth etc etc, they are fun to watch for that chaotic element of unpredictability.

I really like watching him play, he makes the game interesting so for those who enjoy watching him just remember that swing of his can't last for more than 3-4 years before his back starts to give out.
