Would you join a club that has no par 5s?

Recommended Posts

I personally probably wouldn't as I dig par 5 strategy (they're a lot of fun at my club). But if you're cool with the layout and everything else, go for it.

Could you expand on this par 3 that requires a lay up? I am now really curious.

250 yards uphill, into or left to right prevailing wind off the Irish Sea (cold heavy air) narrow green to a peninsula back left, cavernous bunker short left, cross bunker just short and ahead of a false front. Originally designed by Alistair Mckenzie in 1921 as a risk and reward Par 4. At 76 years old I can hit driver to reach it if I'm staright enough, but not to stay on the putting surface.

Not the same hole, but I faced a 254yd Par 3, into at least a 4 club wind playing in South AZ.  That day the wind came up, and it was howling.  I hit Driver on that Par 3 and came up short on the apron, baby chip to the pin, made par.  Many people playing that hole that day would find they laid-up, even if that wasn't the intention. LOL.

Fine by me.  I'm not real picky about that sort of thing.  I would have to ask myself if this is the course I could see myself playing and create good memories for many years to come and if I could answer, yes, I would pull the trigger.

Personally, I've played a few courses like that - and always found them puzzling, and lacking in imagination.
Usually they have a lot of similar, or standard-length par-4s and long par-3s, so the excuse that they didn't have the land available doesn't wash - because if they had mixed in some shorter holes there would surely have been room for at least a couple of par-5s. And usually, it was a result of them being older courses designed by inexperienced designers - and/or being bound and determined to have an 18-hole course, instead of settling for a well-built 9-holer.
I've seen executive courses, with a mix of of par-3s and 4s that even managed to have at least one par-5 - that were a blast to play - and I just fail to see why somebody didn't re-route that course at some point to make it more traditional.

And personally, it makes little difference if I have a 15- or 30-minute drive to the course - it only adds a half an hour to my golf day. And a pool? I can't see the kids being happy with getting dumped at the pool for 5 hours (and they'd end up being lobsters being in the sun that long), and I'd guess would result in your taking the kids home at the turn and ending your day early.

Par is just a number.

With my game, par 5s are simply par 4s anyway.

Cut fade with my driver. 2 iron to the green. Two putt. That’s the way par 5s go for me.

Pssst….you may lose your wrx man card for admitting you hit as much as a 2 iron into a par5.

I’ll let the mods decide if you deserve to continue posting here. 😆

As long as the layout was good (no duplicate holes) and in good shape I'd be fine with it.

On a side note, there's a course here in Phoenix that has 6 par 3's, 6 par 4's, and 6 par 5's.

You didn't ask me but there's a course just south of Tucson, AZ that has a long par 3 (over 200 yards) with houses on the right and a ditch on the left with heavy brush, and the front is protected by 2 bunkers. I always scored better if I played for just in front of the bunkers on the tee shot and played for an up and down.

I don’t think I could convince myself to join a club with no par 5’s and only 2 par 3’s no matter how nice it is. My club is unconventional with 3 par 5’s and 5 par 3’s for a par 70. If it wasn’t tough and played long it would bother me but bc it does and has a higher rating/slope I enjoy the variety and I know it keeps me honest.

There is a course in Wheeling, WV (Speidel Golf Club - Palmer Course) that has 6 par 3's, 7 par 4's and 5 par 5's.

I am in a similar predicament. Always just played public courses at random. We recently purchased a house that we plan to set up roots in so naturally I am looking to join a local club. There are quite a few in the area. The one that is closest and by far the most affordable is a relatively short yet interesting course and offers a great community as well. The others are a bit further away, more expensive, but do offer a more well rounded golf experience.

I have not decided which one to join yet however, in your case I would strongly consider the course that will allow you to play the most golf. You have a wife, 2 kids, and I'm sure a job. Life gets pretty busy.

Let's assume you will play once a week on the weekend no matter what course you play. Will that extra 30 min make it impossible to sneak out for early morning or afternoon rounds during the week? For me, it would make that very hard. I would probably lean towards a cheaper and closer course that lets me play more golf and get more bang for my buck. Especially if the holes were still long enough to take driver often or if there was a driving range/practice facility. I can always still play the other longer courses in the area every once in a while to scratch that itch if needed.

Elie in Fife has no par 5s, and only 2 par 3s, haven't played it but it is supposed to be a fine test.

I have played it, and its a blast.  Lots of variety in the par-4 holes, up and down hills, I'd be a member if I lived there.  That said, having no par-5 holes is a bit of a drawback in general.

Wouldn’t bother me if the course was good. I’m actually really looking forward to Sedge Valley, or whatever the new name is going to be, and it’s par 68. My current club is par 70 with 2 par 5s but really it’s par 68 because they are both 500 yards so just long par 4s. Course is otherwise really enjoyable so it’s not a big deal.

Absolutely I'd join ... fits your budget ... assuming the course is taken care of ... and there are other members who have been there awhile ... the wife is satisfied ...

there are plenty of other golfers who would love to be in your shoes ...

who have no club to join ...

good golfing ...

Firm believer that par is absolutely irrelevant. Make the best score you can on every single hole.

Give me Augusta but shorten each par 5 100 yards to make them par 4s and I’m 100% joining. same with pine valley, Merion, Sleepy Hallow, etc.

Honestly, it sounds like the rest of the course isn’t strong enough to stand on its own and thats why this is being asked. A course with 16 good par 4s and 2 good par 3s is a join every time.

I would do it. If it is a course that is close to home and your family can use it, it is a no brainer. Imagine going out for a round knowing you can join your family pool side and have lunch at the club. If you are member there, it does not restrict you from playing other courses. Now if they had a suggestion box, I would recommend looking at the layout and seeing where a couple of the par 4's can be trimmed to two par threes so that a couple of par 5's can be added.

Totally agree.  I know that par is just a number, but a well-struck 2nd shot on a par 5 can make your day/week/month/year/forever.  #MrSarazen.

Oh yeah, totally. #9 at my spot plays around 520-540 depending on tees and it's usually into the wind. Couple weeks ago I had 250 in with a slight wind helping ... been having a good ballstriking day, it was an early evening round (gone out for 9 after work) so no waiting for the green to clear and ball was sitting up just so in the first cut of rough that I was like "DO IT."

Hit my 3W about as well as I can to see a nice, high draw turning between the front bunkers. Lands a touch short, catches a great bounce and rolls up about 20 feet from the pin.

Missed the putt but that was one of those shots where you're like "HELL YEAH, WHICH WAY TO Q SCHOOL?!" 😂

I really like to crank my 5 wood on the par 5's. Not to reach them, but just to have the room to watch it fly. I could do that course easily as it would have a lot of convivences. I would love to have my neighbor come by in a cart to pick me up!!!
