People are so stupid. I have partners that are active and retired LE and carry. You never know when you are going to run into the (wrong) person in this type of situation. Just dumb.

This has actually happened before.  Senior tour, JC Snead was pitching balls on the practice range a little too close to Dave Hill.  It ended up in a bit of a slug fest.  If I were Dave Hill, I wouldn't have gone into a slug fest with JC Snead, but that's how it went down.

Oh I agree.  Sounds like a whole group of stupid.  Each vying for the title of king shat of turd mountain 😂....  I’d say Dad is the cause of the over boiled temper.  Usually , not always but usually peers can keep it below fisticuffs.  But outside agents are never a help.

Especially when it's the Dad involved.  Couple young guys in their twenties....let's face it, dumb decisions are part of their MO.  But Dad, who should be a little wiser and more calm, getting involved at all, is just a bad sign.  Especially given that he has already reproduced.

Just speculation, maybe Player B and/or Dad had been chirping at Player A to hurry up, prompting the “you could help look” comment.

Not defending any type of behavior but when I get paired with strangers in casual rounds and they hit one sideways I help them look.  But if on the 5th hole we're doing it for the 4th time already I start to pull back on my effort because its starting to become apparent this guy is gonna live in the weeds all day.  So it could have been something like that.  Player A, young guy in a qualifier is nervous, hitting it sideways - not gonna qualify anyway.  Player B maybe has a chance and doesn't want to chase balls for someone's lost cause.

I'm sympathetic to this thinking, but I'm the other way.  Growing up, I was taught that we must help look for a lost ball until the player decides to give up the ghost.  Why?  It's the right thing to do.  More pragmatically, we're all stuck on the same boat.  It's not like the group is going anywhere until he finds it or decides to drop.

Unfortunately, by the back nine, it usually ends up being that you focus on your playing companion's ball more than your own to ease the pain of the inevitable search to come.  Such is life and the luck of the draw.

Ehhh...I get what you're saying - fair point.  But the flip side of that is that everyone pays for their round and has a right to enjoy it in their own way.  If someone wants to think I'm a jerk because I stopped really looking in earnest after the 6th or 7th time so be it.  I can live with that because at some point I'm going to make a decision to focus on my own game rather that just be distracted for an entire round.  And you sort of alluded to that in your second paragraph.

In a competitive situation I can see if someone can't control their ball it can lead to hurt feelings at times.  If someone can't keep it on the course but gets upset that his fellow competitors aren't helping to look I can sort of understand.  On ITR radio on SiriusXM this morning I heard them say someone in the qualifier shot 56 on the front 9.  I feel sorry for whoever was paired w/them.

I have rules to live by when it comes to this. Maybe its out of line but it gets the point across.

1. If you do it on nearly every hole for the first 4 holes you hit driver on, its a player issue and stomping through knee high grass on a 90 degree day isn't something I want to keep doing.

2. you don't return the favor if one of mine goes off line

3. you are lookin at a location "you swear you saw it land" which is 40 yards ahead of your provisional "because you caught it good" even though in reality you hit a wipey fade that was 40 yards short of your provisional, where it really landed.

4. doesnt matter what hole or how many times you did it, if you lose a ball, play it lateral, knock it on the green and 2 putt but still come out with a par.  I can add, and I can tell your score doesn't matter, you're going to write down what you "would have had" if you didn't put it in the neighbors fire pit.

My FIL was of the mind that a golf ball

Can never be lost!

He be like staging expeditions into forest and swamps to find precious golf ball.

🤣

He was right of course. A lost ball will eventually become a found ball, and there is no penalty for a found ball. Ipso facto, there is no penalty for a (temporarily) lost ball.

My MIL was the same way.

She was playing in Florida one day and she went off looking for a ball. Sadly, a gator grabbed her and pulled her underwater.  She drowned.

I'd always told her that golf balls weren't worth the trouble. Perhaps she believes me now.

My FIL would have jumped right in after her and the gator 🐊!

In order to get the golf ball

I’d personally be more worried about getting a gun pulled on me or shot by someone “carrying” that wasn’t active or retired LE! Hard to believe LE anything would be stupid enough pull a gun on a golf course over a punch!

Silver lining. She drowned before being eaten alive. And I just consulted my spirit  guide… She does believe you now.

Boudreaux got home from work one evening & his wife Chantille came running out of the house crying.

"Boudreaux, one'a dem gators come out de bayou and et one'a our 12 chillun!"

"Which one?"

"I don't know, all dem gators look alike to me."
