Current Delays on Irons

Recommended Posts

I have seen different threads about delays on specific irons, but wanted to get some info on companies as a whole.  Do there appear to be certain companies (OEMS, shafts and grips) that are handling shortages better than others?  It seems that many of the delays I see are related to the manufacturer not being able to get the shafts. I am curious because I have a fitting on Jan 23rd and delays could be a decision point if all else is equal.  I am currently without irons bc my clubs were stolen back in November. I am interested specifically in Mizuno, Callaway, TM, Titleist and Srixon. Those are the irons I am strongly considering.

Its a box of chocolates WRT components, which is most of the problem. last year heads were also a problem with many but I think most have caught up (Ping perhaps not yet).

I have played around with the TM custom shop web site for example, and based on shaft/grip can see dates move out weeks or months based on selected component, so their heads should be relatively OK.

I also wanted to buy some simple Dynamic Gold 105 shafts this week and all major distributors had the 7i on back order so there's that box again 🙂

What I have seen/heard is that Callaway and PXG are turning around custom orders with the fewest delays, with PING and Taylormade seemingly having some of the biggest delays. It's sad what has happened to PING, as I believe (and I have been a PING player for decades) that they are doing irreparable damage to their brand. Basically if your a big box store and you want to keep clients happy, and you can pretty much fit anyone into almost anything, the client will gravitate to the shortest waits. For me, I just buy OTR and do my own shaft and grip work (and bends). Yes it may cost a bit more, but I ain't waiting 15 weeks for a set of irons, sorry.

PXG only lists stiff they have, so if you see the shaft you need, you will get it. I was going to buy 0211 ST's but they ran out of the MMT shaft. It's in stock now, but the mood has passed. 🤣

Love em or hate em, no one is turning around orders faster than PXG right now. In fact, their product is shipping faster than it was pre-Covid. Of course there are limitations to product availability but, if they have it, you’re getting it within a couple weeks max.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.  Good to hear about Mizuno's times since they are at or near the top of my list.  Anyone know anything about Titleist specifically?  I plan to try others, but have it narrowed in my head to the T200 and 225.  I was on the fence about TM anyway bc I already have a bit of a complicated past with them.  Never been a fan of PING irons, but will definitely look at the 425 driver. Not sure if I could go with PXG.  I don't want to hear Bob Parsons yelling at me in my head about flying pigs everytime I pull an iron. Srixon could be the wild card.

I went to my local PGATSS a couple of days ago and the selection of stock clubs including drivers, irons, wedges was pretty concerning.

Only had 7 MG3 wedges, and only 10 vokey wedges. Half of which didn't have a grip on them.

Still a grip shortage as well....

As usual, it depends. I was waiting approx 6 weeks for a Srixon zx5 order w/ Nippon shafts before I cancelled this week. I buddy of mind ordered a zx5/7 mixed set with Recoil 95's on 12/31 and received them on Monday. He was as shocked as I was!

Oh, I figured the ungripped wedges were an intentional selling point - pick your own grip at no additional charge (up to a $ point).  Maybe not.

I would agree, but 3 or 4 of them had the stock grip. The rest were just bare steel.
I am assuming that they couldn't afford to wait for the grips to finish the builds so just sent them to the retailer as is. Again, just my assumption.

Only reason I came to this conclusion, is that last year when I ordered my SIM2, the grip I chose (Z grip cord Midsize) would delay the build 2 months. So I just had them to send me less grip.

I was browsing my local PGA SS a couple weeks ago and noticed the gripless wedges and out of curiosity asked a sales dude - who turned out to be the manager - and he told me that's exactly what it was.

The ST-Z 5W I ordered before Thanksgiving is supposedly going to ship in May, at the earliest.  So while I agree Mizuno and Srixon may not have delays as bad as other manufacturers, they still have issues, somewhere in their pipelines.

I’m close to 6 months waiting on my P790’s.  Apparently, it’s the MMT shafts causing the issue.

All the PXG stuff I bought this year arrived in 7 business days or less.  The good thing about PXG is if they don’t have inventory, they don’t sell it.

TM P790 - ordered +1/2, midsize grips and upright lie on November 3rd 2021.  Have spoken to CS multiple times, changed shaft choice to match what CS rep said was in stock and was told last week that my irons were in production!  Yip yip hooray!  Guess, what received a notice yesterday that they have been pushed back 2 weeks!  Sent my trade in on November 3rd and won't receive credit for that until my irons shipped.  No doubt the trade in has been sold long ago.  My frustration level is high but after more than 2 months I am simply resigned to waiting, waiting and waiting.

Mizuno JPX 921 Hot Metals with Recoil 95’s were quoted 4-5 weeks for me today. I heard quicker turnaround times over the past few weeks, but I’m not sure if the demand has picked up or inventory is low. I’m hoping that maybe I was given a more conservative estimate.

Edit: 1/16 - Order confirmation came through and is now showing 3-4 weeks. We’ll see if that’s true.

Interesting, mine has a pretty healthy stock of vokeys in multiple colors and pretty much every combo bounce and grind. Same thing with MG3's and Callaway. Only things they are light on are Mizunos and Pings. All of them were gripped and the golf pride grip bins were as full as I have ever seen them in about 8-9 months

Don’t even attempt to order kbs c taper Mizuno pulled kbs shafts and said c tapers won’t be available until 2023

Mizuno  pullled all KBS shafts from the line up! With this issue I would be surprised to see if they don’t get bought out from another company.
