Any young player that is offered a high money contract from the DP tour would be a moron not to take it seeing there money is not guaranteed on the PGA tour.

Love Phil but this is ridiculous. Don't bite the hand that feeds you. I get what he's saying about the tour profiting off of players, but jumping ship and playing in Saudi is not the way to protest.

You mean the SGL (Saudi event is an Asian tour event). The DP tour (aka old European Tour) and The PGA Tour are partners and the PGA Tour has a stake in the DP tours media content. PGA Tour and DP World also have 3 co-sanctioned events: Scottish Open, Barbasol, and Barracuda.

Off the top of my head, the tour is really only a platform to manage pro golf business  and the players agree to the structure because it’s not practical for them to manage it.

 

The tour walks a fine line because the players hold all the cards.

 

My take is the tour is not like othe sports leagues where each team gets a distribution on the revenue. And each player gets to negotiate a contact that guarantees them money. 
 

Basically, golf tour pros have agreed to play for nothing guaranteed. 
 

Why is that? 
 

As “independent contractors” why are they giving up media rights to their work?

 

There could be some big changes coming with players working together to apply the leverage they have.

When you can set your own schedule, you give up some things. You can’t do that in many other sports leagues.

The players guarantee they will play a certain number of events.

 

The tour guarantees nothing. 
 

It’s sounds odd beyond the fact that 

 

“That’s just how it’s always been done”

 

But many a big ubiquitous business has got smoked by adhering to that mantra. 
 

Id look for the players to smarten up and apply the screws. Be like

If Phil thinks PGA tour players are doing it tough getting about 55% of total revenue, he can thank his lucky stars he isn't a MMA fighter.

 

UFC fighters get around 20% of the total pie and take home brain damage for their troubles.

In other sports leagues, the teams negotiate with the league for their cut of everything. Then the players negotiate with the league. 
 

The pga tour “teams” are the players. They can negotiate a deal for anything they want. Phil has a point.

Long and interesting article.  I really got the impression from Phil that the players are the Mike Tysons of the Tour and the PGA is the Don King no talent azz-clowns????   
 

The players could collectively eliminate the middle-Monahans, make themselves more money while producing better content for the consumer?

Friendly reminder that the SGL is the Saudi League and the PGL is not.  Also, many people are saying that Phil is just waiting for his PIP check to clear before he bounces over to the B0nesaw league, so my take on this is that he is setting the stage to do just that.

Whoa, shots fired when he just won the PIP award. However, he does have some valid points. I'd bet a lot of players echo his statements, but are afraid to voice them. The points he makes is not just talking about himself, but is talking about all the PGA and Korn Ferry players as a whole because many of the lower ranked guys that are just scraping by would likely benefit greatly to have some more earning power with the rights to their own media. Only the top 150 guys on PGA tour are likely making decent money with all the PGA tour expenses they have.

From that article, 55% is what Monaham and PGA tour claim is what the players are getting in 2021.  However, in an interview with Gary Williams, Mickelson said that NFL, NBA, MLB players get 55% of the league revenue, but the PGA tour players make only 26% of the PGA tour revenue. So, the PGA players are making closer percentage to UFC fighters share of revenue.

 

Also, one big thing that is not discussed much is on the NFL, NBA, and MLB all their travel costs are paid for by the leagues, but on PGA and Korn Ferry, all travel costs are paid for by the players.

all true ... part of the appeal is the "you get paid for how you played" .. seems phil might want to double down on that instead of revenue sharing ... he does get to benefit from his independent play ... but maybe his politics and mine don't align ... golf will, however, have to reckon with the ever growing issue of "humans rights washing" that is beginning, or exponentially growing, in the game ... phil can be in the lead or in the rear ... his choice ...

And another $1000 on hypocrisy. Phil will break the law for monetary gain. But the PGAs greed (which isn’t against the law) is “obnoxious” in his opinion??? Perhaps he doesn’t consider his greed obnoxious because it’s just what wealthy ppl with friends in high places do. Or perhaps only the greed being perpetrated against him is obnoxious… 🤔 Yeah, that must be it. Paleeeeez. Pot meet kettle. So yeah, some good points, delivered by the wrong messenger.
