Poker chips are for poker tables

So if a poker chip not in your line but a couple feet left or right is a distraction what about some standing 20 degrees left or right lining up from the other side of the green? How about 90 degrees? or should we just all stand 140 degrees away then walk back up to green?

That won't slow play down at all.

I've never had a 10 foot putt where a person stood 5 feet in front of me and two feet out of my line. If they did, I'd ask them to move.

None of the anti-chip crowd has an issue with people standing in reasonable places. The issue is that chips go down in places where a person would never stand and where you would never place a flagstick.

I golf with several guys who use poker chips or similar sized markers.  All are very polite about and usually dig out a smaller marker if it looks like the marker might be in someone else's line.  I don't care one way or the other and if the poker chip is in my line I simply have them move it.  For myself I like to use the little white push in markers that a lot of courses give away for free.  A lot of times whoever is putting will simply tap the push in down and putt right over it.

Same, but with a twist. I use change from some bucket list courses I have played - like a 50P form the Old Course. By beer with cash, see the coins - what a great memento

Also, the chip must be at least $100. If you're going in, you've got to go all in.

Excellent point

This is definitely the way

The only way

Coins and regular sized ball markers fall out of my pocket when I sit down on the cart. The poker chip does not. One time on a golf trip i saw everyone was hungover and not having fun so i used a $20 bill as my ball marker and it seemed to get everyone back in good spirits.

I think I got the best solution.  Like Happy Gilmore’s caddy you use a ritz cracker.  Just think after you hole out you get a snack!  It’s ecofriendly as well.

A did B given it was generally reasonable given C, thus D was born. Then we learned that C was not all encompassing but were constrained by D. Then some, not all, said do away with D, let's have E, instead, then F, then G, all due to learning more about C. Turns out everything about everything after D was D given a richer understanding of C and it's contingent nature. Those that were old were happy to do what they could - and had little concern for whatever version of D that others were observing - for it was good enough and a pleasant difference.

Agreed.  Ping sent me  a couple Ping branded poker chips.  I will never use them on the course (I don't play poker either).  Instead I just keep them with my other markers since Ping is awesome.

I’m on the poker chip side. Easier to find in pocket. Doesn’t fall out.  Easier to spot from a distance my eye sight isn’t that great.  I will most definitely move it anywhere for anyone if it’s near their line. If you hit a ball mark your putt is going off line no matter what. Hit a better putt.

I notice they call it a poker chip and not a ball marker.

In a competitive round,  if it's anywhere between me and the hole I'll ask them to mark it with something smaller/flatter or finish out.  In a casual round I don't care if you use your golf bag to mark it.

I use them and will ask someone if it bothers them. Never have had anyone say so. I have a bunch of them. Seems somehow and I do not know why in Tourist golf season we seem to find a lot from different courses some in our area some not.

I have one that is somewhat special--- A friend of mine owns a couple of Tattoo Parlors. During Bike weeks and such he gives out ones worth $25 off a tat. I beat him out of $25 one day on a trick Golf Bet and he paid me off with one. Besides for me it was not about the money it was the fact of me getting over on him. I keep that one put up and when I know I am playing with him I pull it out and use it and we get a laugh because I got over on him and he did me likewise.

I use a poker sized mark I got when I played Pebble Beach. It has a smaller marker in the center attached by a magnet that I use when I’m close or near another ball.  No drama.

I use one of these, from 2017 US Open at Erin Hills, but never to mark my ball. Just as a place to keep my main ball marker since it is easier to find in my pocket and less likely to get lost. I can't bring myself to use a hat marker, lol.

I do the same. Simply ask. Or if I feel it’s too close to someone’s line I’ll substitute in a smaller one on my own.  But I certainly won’t stop using one. For all the reasons that have been mentioned, easier to see and easier to find in the pocket.

Amd like someone above said, if one is being used and it’s a couple feet off your line and you hit it…….that’s on you hitting a crappy putt.  Not on the type of mark being used. I swear some people get bent out of shape by the littlest things.

Yes. They are pretty light and easily moved on windy day though.

This is not correct. Ball markers do not need to be round under the rules.

I've used one in a pinch, but technically they're not permitted under the rules of golf if they aren't round.

Thanks @2bGood for clarifying… the “not permitted unless round” comment =made me recall those fancy Scotty Cameron ball marker-cum-aiming-tool thingamajigs.

i will confess a preference for those cheap "metal gasket/washer" stainless steel rings, as my ball marker
... as these are small/flat/ can attach to the magnetic putter headcovers (whereas a huge plastic poker chip = isn't magnetic?)

(albeit "to each their own" i.e. i've heard other folks eg @BIG STU are averse to using putter headcovers!)
