64 degree wedge, who has one and who has had one?

I added one this year and it is my go to club out of the sand greenside.

everywhere else though, I have to ask myself “can I play this shot with any other club in the bag?” And if the answer is yes, I pull something else

I switched out my 56 to a RTX zipcore mid grind which is pretty tame as far as sand wedges go and use for most everything else 100 and in.

For fun absolutely try it.

I have a ton of experience with 64º wedges starting with the Wilson Mojave in the late 90's. I'm one of the few people who has worn out and then repurchased a couple of 64's my favs are the Cleveland and Callaways so basically Roger Cleveland designs. But it's been a part of my summer bag for a long time.

The 64 can be super fun and realistically it's a very low return on investment of practice time. I'm a Pelzionan for sure, none the less a 64 is not advised to quickly lower scores. Reason being is that the vast majority of time anything else is a much better play.

The 64º has to be practiced a good deal, a ton of time needs to go into reading lies and then incredible discretion must be exercised or it will cost you more strokes than it saves.

Most of the people I've seen try to use Xlofted wedges apply piss poor technique and understanding with questionable shot selection then blame the wedge. I've seen it so often a guy saves a stroke with his X then the next 3 are all way outside of 8 feet if they're even on the green. I've certain been that guy too.

Try to keep in mind that LOWER is BETTER for the vast majority of golf shots.

Where I've had the best results from a Xwedge is on especially fast greens where you can take a bigger swing, get the balling coming in higher and rolling out less.

Enjoy!

I had one, but sold it a couple of months ago after I realised I hadn't used it once in the last 2 years.

That said, it was a fun club. Like some posters here, I found I useful for fuller wedge shots, like 60~70 yards, than little delicate ones. It was hard to get distance right with the little delicate ones.

It was also useful for surprise 150-yard line drives. If I could have mastered that shot, I'd would have been unbeatable in the wind!

If you have room in the bag for one, give it a go. Definitely a fun club when hit right.

I messed around with one for a while - demo from the Pro Shop that no one had touched and the Pro was happy for me to take it for an extended spin.

I am not sure that I could see the benefit of it. I too had read the Pelz Short Game Bible a few years before that, it stayed on my shelf longer than the 64 degree wedge stayed in my bag but I am happy to report that both are now no longer in my possession and never will be again. I either play a heathland course or links and there was simply no benefit of having 4 degrees more loft than my 60 which I can open up without issue if required.

Had a 52, 58, 64 setup.  Used the 64 rarely, but did have a few good shots with it.  There were many more duffs due to trying to pull off shots more advanced than I can.

I have since gone to a specialty set of 46, 52, 58 with a unique sole grind for each and a planned purpose for every situation.

I find the Pelz approach too mechanical. Prefer to practice shots by feel.  Short game improved.

This is the first season in the last 8-10 years where I didn't have a 64* wedge in my bag.  I was finding myself to use it kind of like a crutch.  So, I wanted to prove to myself that I didn't need it.  Truth be told, I probably don't.  But, I do miss having one.  I ended up getting my 60 bent to 62 to get a happy medium.  That seemed to work ok but not quite the same effect.

Still have a 64* PM wedge that goes in and out of the bag.  It is a great tool for when you don’t have time to practice high lofted shots with a lower wedge.  The PM Grind is magic out bunkers.  I can get away with just my 58 most rounds, but the 64 is still a valuable weapon.

I bought one for fun a couple of years ago, it's my favourite club from my bag. I  was going home for a few days and didn't want to carry my clubs, so i e-bay'd one to my home and took it out to the range. 64* is pretty rediculous, so it was mainly just for fun. It was quickly useful and in the bag.

I switched it out due to my OCD and trying out different brand wedges to make a "matching set" of cobras. I found that it didn't make sense, so I switched the 64 back in for better performance.

I use the TM Hi Toe 64 with the ATX grind and it's really great. I recently calibrated some swings to get 3 basic shots. 30yds 50yds, 75 yds. you can plus minus 5 yards on each one with a small variation.

Most of the time within 80 yards, i will play the 64 degree, depending on the conditions lie, green etc.

Many people will argue you don't need more than a sand wedge and that a lob is too difficut for most to use, however, i find i use it the most often from my wedges.

It's almost like a cheat code out of bunkers, because you have enough loft that you don't need to open up the face. Most of the time, the regular 3 calibrated shots are also good enough from the bunker, just need to modify the swing length a little longer to compensate the sand if it's soft.

Otherwise, from harder pan sand, it's the same shot as from a range mat.

Just put a new shaft in it, since i'd set up my cobras before and was playing the stock 64. Looking forward to getting out again this coming week and check the calibrations if there's any flight or distance chance from the shaft.

Someone who only uses a putter may win 😝 😝

I could see many people hitting the 64* further than the 1-iron, and neither in a good way.

Back when I worked in the golf industry, a 64-ish degree wedge would occasionally find it's way into the lost and found. They were fun to mess around with. But I personally didn't see any advantage in adding one to the bag.

I'm pretty solid with my 60. Use it from 100 yds. to green side. Pretty much my exclusive club for chips, pitches, and anything inside 75 yards or so. Open face, closed face, it does it all.

Would a 64 make some rare shots easier. Maybe. But I feel comfortable executing with a 60 in those instances where a 64 might have an advantage.

I have a Cleveland CG14 model 64*/12. I have played with it a few times on the practice range, but never used it in a round.

For LWs, I stick with a 58*.  Have tried 60*, but these are too unstable for anything but greenside pop shots.

Back Story: I started playing CG14 wedges in 2009, right before the New Grooves rule took effect. In late 2010, golf shops started selling off old-style CG14s; slightly used ones were going for $50 or so.

By hunting around, I ended up with a fill array of CG14s: 46, 48, 50, 52, 54, 56, 58, 60, 64. Some still have the original TRAction shafts (similiar to original Spinner shafts) while others have been refitted with KBS Tour shafts.

I have a small CG14-only bag, and take it to the range occasionally if someone is thinking about replacing wedges. They can get the feel of hitting different lofts with different shafts.

I have an OG 64° PM Grind that is super easy to hit from greenside bunkers. But when I carry it, I fall into the trap that I need to use it for other shots as well, and I struggle with consistency. At the end of the day, I usually don't find myself needing it enough to justify carrying it. But every now and then, I'll throw it in the bag.

Count me as one of those that read the SGB and bought one for grins.

I agree with those that said it's very much a horses for courses club.  A weapon in the right hands/situation, but that just didn't happen enough for me to get a permanent spot.   Before I sold it, it only came out to play in certain hit n giggle scrambles.

I’ve been carrying a 64* for at least 10 years and I’ll always have one in the bag.

My general feeling is that it’s definitely a situational club, but if you think you can hit the 64*, you can, and if you’re constantly worried about thinning it, you will.

Had one for a short while as a result of it being my club of choice in our golf store’s pitching competitions during the winter. Loser paid for coffees/lunches.

We used to navigate our way round our store, and if you could ‘cut’ over a 6ft glass divider pane you’d save a shot and never have to pay. Needed steady hands though. 60° wasn’t enough to risk it.

I got quite proficient with it, and bought one with the amount I saved on coffees. Didn’t need it, as if you weren’t hitting off carpet tiles then a 60° with a nice heel grind can do the job 😄

I think there’s a place for one dependent on course set-up. A friends course has loads of pot bunkers and raised greens. 64° is popular with a lot of their members.
