Is this a hole in one?

Recommended Posts

When I got my ball into the hole with one swing it didn't count as a HIO as it was on an extra hole after playing 9 for a score. Would not have counted anyway as an Ace needed to be made in an 18 hole round to be officially recognized.

Pretty sure and Ace counts in a 9 hole rd on a legit course and it's at least 90 yds in length.

So a hole in one in a non competitive or practice round is not a hole in one?

It dependings on the scoring protocol for the day. If the practice round is registered for score, as to determine the team's starting line-up, it would count.

It does today. It didn't then. Game was harder with actual wooden woods in a lot of rules ways.

A solid example of why I never hit two balls on a par 3, or if I do I hit it away from the pin.  Never had a hole in one, and man would it be a let down for this to be how it happened.

Actually had this happen twice over the years as a witness. The guys chunked the tee shot and made the second one. One guy was embarrassed and didn't say a word. The other guy told us it was an ace, i told him it's a 2,3 or 4 but its not an ace.

It's 100% a hole-in-one only if he buys drinks after the round. Then the next day we have to break the bad news to him. 🤣

There are no official hard and fast actual rules about hole in ones. Including yardage. People have suggested their own beliefs and suggestions but that's all they are. Suggestions.

For instance at the Walker Cup at LACC a few years back they played a par 3 that was only 80 yards. If somebody holed their tee shot it would have been a HIO.

People like to discount par 3 courses for HIO's. So I guess the back to back HIO's that Seamus Power had at the Masters par 3 tournament this year don't count or never happened since it was not on a legitimate course. C'mon.

I'd suggest you not take what I posted so seriously. I know there are no set rules for a HIO and would definitely count Powers aces.

This thread is ridiculous. Even more ridiculous are the people saying that it is a hole in one. He hit two balls. That’s a hole in two.  By many people analysis here, the guy could have dropped a bucket of 100 range balls, hit them all, finally made one, and called it a hole in one because he did it on that one swing.   Ridiculous.

🤣 Exactly. This thread makes me giggle. By the definition here, every time I sink a putt it is a "hole in one" - it was one stroke, and it went in the hole. Was it the only stroke on the hole? No - but apparently that doesn't matter. I'm pleased to announce I get 18 holes in one in every round.

Technically, by the RoG, it wasn't even a hole in 2 - it was a par. He hit one, took an unplayable (even if it might have been playable, still you can take one - declaring an unplayable is solely at the discretion of the player, unless the ball is in a penalty area), dropped for two, holed the 3. Par.

I do get practice rounds. Actually do them a lot in early spring to shake off winter rust. Have a couple local courses where I'll go out later in the day alone, hardly anyone on the course, and play two or three balls a hole. Work out kinks in the swing. Try risk/reward shots I'd never try during a real round. You can swing much more freely, experiment, when score doesn't matter. I totally get the value in rounds like that.

BUT! You can't have it both ways. When you stand on the tee of a practice round and say "scores don't matter" (which is the entire point of a practice round - you are working on your swing, not your score), then scores don't matter. A hole in one on that Par 3 is not a hole in one, any more than the 6 on that same Par 3 is a 6 during a practice round.

Now and then I'll hit the bottom of the flagstick warming up with wedges before a round. Not uncommon to sink a 20-footer on the practice green before a round (especially having already had two attempts from the same spot).

Only hole in one that counts is one played during a legitimate, RoG round where every stroke counts.

I don't claim the ones I've holed with the first ball on a par three course, so I'm definitely not counting that.

Here's a twist. This happened.

Match play. Par 3.

Player A hits it to about 10 feet.

Player B says Player A hit from in front of the markers. Opts to have Player A replay the shot.

Yep. Player A re-tees and cans it.

Hole in one, most def.

I had to look this one up. Interesting turn of events! So on the next par three A is out of turn and B cancels the stroke and then tees off in the correct order and A retees (without penalty) and cans it...its a similar scenario. A's wallet gets a lot lighter at the 19th hole!
