Tiger and Nike golf to separate after PNC? (*** MERGED ***)

Recommended Posts

From Will Ashworth at MSNBC: Should Nike Shareholders Be Worried About Losing Tiger Woods? (msn.com)

"As for Nike, it hasn’t made golf equipment since 2016. Tiger moved to TaylorMade, which South Korean private equity firm KPS Partners owns. According to the Front Office Sports report, Woods has been seen wearing Footjoy golf shoes. They’re owned by Acushnet Holdings (GOLF). So, for the last seven years, Nike has only been generating revenue from golf apparel.

According to its fiscal 2016 10-K (May year-end), it made $706 million in golf revenue. In the two years prior, it earned $769 million in 2015 and $788 million in 2014. By 2017, they were down to $579 million. The following year, they were lumped in with all the other categories that were not big enough to get their own line item.

So, I guess that fiscal 2013 was the height of Nike Golf's revenue at $791 million."

To me its a tough situation where Tiger would go.

(A) leaves Nike and goes somewhere else

(B) stays with Nike, maybe for less money.

Route B is probably safer. No pun intended, but it difficult for a tiger to changes its stripes; meaning, Tiger in terms of Nike is a pitchman for more of a mid-cost brand that is heavily pitched as the "athletic" brand. Nike has roots in basically all other sports, so kids/adults who say play football or baseball will probably want Nike golf apparel. Might be hard to get those same people excited for a higher end product depending where he goes (Greyson?). I'd look at it almost as if Jordan stopped selling sneakers and went to a higher end business shoe company; I don't know if Jordan selling the "Allen Edmonds Office Jordans" would be bought by the same group as the current Air Jordans.

Tiger has his people and they know this. May he takes a lesser deal with Nike for the long term, I have to imagine he has ownership at Nike and could probably get them to throw him some options if he takes less pay. I don't know how it works with the "TW" logo but I'd think his process would be work something out with Nike, go strictly TW logo, or other company in that order. Money wise, yes he wants to get paid, but he has a lot of business ventures right now.

I know Nike just laid off a bunch of folks and are looking to dump more folks soon. They could save a few million dumping Woods from the payroll, so not a bad move from a business standpoint.

Not like they don't have other folks rep'ing gear on tour.

I did think it was interesting during the Hero that he wore a hat with the Nike swoosh logo on the front during all four rounds. He typically wears a hat with his TW logo on the front on Thu/Fri and then a swoosh logoed hat on Sat/Sun. Wonder if there was a reason for him doing this? Could be because it’s his last real event with them and Nike wanted their logo as visible as possible for the final time?

Funny. The news made me go get a Panera lemonade 🤷🏼‍♂️

Living on the edge?   That's very adventurous of you.

I used to think I was living on the edge too, ordering the unopened clams and mussels special at my local seafood joint.

Nope.

It was a myth that finds it origin in 1971 with the publication of Jane Grigson's 'Fish Book' in which she claimed that if mussels didn't open then they should be thrown away.  Studies have shown this not to be true at all, despite the fallacy being included in 90% of cookbooks by the end of the 20th century.  In fact, it is likely that unopened mussels and clams could be fresher and more nutritious than others.

A 16oz has ~208 mg of caffeine. My gym (and every grocery store) has big displays of energy drinks from various brands with between 200-300 mg in 16oz. So I say meh. Per usual, just the story the media decided to run with this news cycle.

I think the TW fans that post on places like this are not like the majority of golfers in the market for soft goods. They are much more fickle and tend to buy The Next Big Thing that comes along. For some years that was the TW line from Nike, but those days are gone. With Tiger on television mostly for interviews and news reports instead of tournaments or exhibitions over the last few years, he hasn’t been in the public eye much and nobody has seen anything particularly new or unique in the Nike soft goods he wears. So it is no surprise if the company decided he no longer moves the needle and wanted to move on from him and his pricey contract. The same thing happened with players going back to Palmer and Nicklaus, though if they ever had on-course clothing deals they would have been worth peanuts by comparison. Not easy to move those stiff-collar Palmer golf shirts these days.

You expect those cans of chemicals to be filled with sketch but you don't necessarily expect your refillable cup (of like 32oz? for a large, btw) to be something that can do you immediate harm. I drink either diet soda or standard iced tea and I at a minimum drink one onsite and get a full refill on departure...Doing that with "charged" whatever is a hazard esp if you aren't expecting it.

I think ppl should be responsible for what they put in their bodies. 🤷🏼‍♂️ No doubt because it’s fairly common these days to not take responsibility for your choices/actions, it’s clearly someone else’s fault right. 🙄

*Charged  lemonade clearly wasn’t a big enough clue. Most were probably just expecting to be shocked.

So after a super fast Google search I found this. Caffeine content displayed clear as day right on the front of the drink dispenser. I mean… 🤷🏼‍♂️

Nice try Ti. Signs at Panera weren't put up until after it came out that young lady died and Panera was sued by her parents.. She died in September 2022. Panera only put the signs up at some locations in late October of this year.
