It's likely Woods does not move apparel to the degree that justifies what Nike is paying him.  They are likely selling a lot of golf apparel that doesn't have his name on it.  Has Woods really spiked Bridgestone ball sales?  TM equipment? 

 

Someone mentioned the Uniqlo/Federer deal.  $300 million over 10 years.  Uniqlo was looking to break out into people's consciousness, so you take a big shot like that.  Does Nike really need to pay big money to Woods to sell golf shirts?  Especially when a guy like McIlroy is probably more relevant to their target market anyway.

 

The big question is, if he leaves Nike, does his building get renamed?

I assume its just time for his every-decade renegotiation.  He's one of the most valuable athletes to have signed so my expectation would be that this is all semantics.  Nike really missed the mark with marketing Tiger specific branding on things, his value from that perspective is not quite MJ levels, but they could have done so much with him.

I can understand discussing this as a business interest. But I don't get comments like "I hope not." Why does anyone care unless perhaps you sell the clothing?

 

But then again I might not understand as I never owned superhero pajamas either 🤣

Aren’t Taylormade and Adidas in some sort of cahoots with each other to some extent? Adidas is a lifestyle brand, I sort of think of that to Taylormade what travis mathew is to Callaway.

He NLU segment was an aside. Basically what the tweet says, that the PNC may be Tiger’s last with Nike, and that another club OEM is talking about starting an apparel line. That’s about it.

 

I can see Nike letting him go more than Tiger opting out, especially since Nike stayed with him through his Perkins-waitress-in-a-church-parking-lot days. 

 

So, is Nike getting out of golf? Haven’t seen the spring 24 sales catalog or any rumors about 24 shoes. Tried to buy my favorite Classic99 cap and they’re all out of stock. Most of their clothing designs lately have seemed following more than leading and lackluster. For 2 years now they’ve done ZERO advertising.

I imagine he costs a lot of money for that privilege and doesn't play a lot to be worth such a high price. He also doesn't seem to like their shoes, so he's not even wearing all their gear anymore.

 

It would be jarring to see Tiger in anything but Nike though, but could understand if they parted ways.

It was weird to me that Nike couldn't/wouldn't make a knockoff FJ shoe for Tiger. IMO, it was kind of telling. He's one of, if not their biggest name so for him to just not use their shoe was surprising.

Nike has the absolute most boring golf attire.  Worst part of Nelly Korda signing for Nike, was her having to wear Nike apparel.  And she had just launched (like the month before she signed with Nike) a new line of clothes with J. Lindberg.  They put so much into the line, that after she left JL hired a model who was essentially a non-golfing version of Nelly to promote the line.

 

My boss buys Nike golf polo shirts with our company logo on them, for work clothes.  Ill fittings, ill performing, and dull as hell.

So to the greater issue, golf seems awfully saturated with lifestyle brands right now that cover a pretty wide range of styles… Peter Millar, Greyson, G/Fore, Travis Mathew, Linksoul, FJ, Holderness and Bourne, Adidas, Nike and plenty of others. If the rumors are true, where would Taylormade try to position themselves?

Agreed. I've only been luke warm on Nike shirts. Always preferred Adidas and FJ where the fabric seems of better quality.

Yeah I mean your likely right for example he is my favorite athlete of all time - but I don't have any TW shirts because 120$ Canadian is insane for a shirt I'll spill rum all over when I'm trying to golf lol

I ditched Nike tennis shoes for Pumas because the quality and comfort are better to me.

 A Monster Energy/Taylor Made hat. This is also likely as much about Charlie as Tiger. Nike does absolutely nothing for golf anymore. Almost all solid colors and an occasional pattern. They will not even make a special shoe for the greatest player in Golf. They will go back to the Strange/Seve days where someone just has a sewn on patch on a hat. Maybe FJ for gear

 

 

And tha fact that they do not allow other logos on their gear has to be costing people money
