Tiger and Nike golf to separate after PNC? (*** MERGED ***)

Tiger and the swoosh are one of the most famous sponsorships in sports IMO, but I could see how it's not really translating to a positive ROI on the swoosh side given what Tiger commands for compensation. I definitely don't see Nike leaving the soft goods side of golf though like some of you have suggested. They will just look to get some more fresh blood and can probably spread out Tiger's amount across many different players.

I also wear pretty much exclusively Next%, TW13s, AirMAX90s, Jordan 1s, and Jordan 5s.  But either off eBay or bought with huge discounts (with the next% seems when a new colourway comes out you can often score the OG colourways for under 50 bucks)

It's hard to want to even check out any new, extremely overpriced golf shoes by Nike with hardly any new tech on them, just hideous colorways.. although I like the look of the VT3s, I guess I'll wait a few years until they drop in price by a lot. 😅

 

that said one of my favorite Nike golf items of recent years was the Nike TW repel jacket It's really good for a spring/summer jacket.

Nike is losing footwear market share fast to smaller running brands like Hoka and On Running. It seems like folding Nike Golf and TW all together would align with a restructure to be more innovative/profitable in other departments.

 

I can see your first point - in Tigers heyday it was easy enough to find a TW shirt - I had 3 or 4 and still have one of the collarless ones in the drawer somewhere. Recently though I haven't seen any anywhere, it's like they're Tiger (and Scotty) only now, which seems strange. 

 

However in fairness - Nike apparel seems really difficult to find in shops over here in the UK these days. Most of the pro shops I knew that stocked it have stopped, and even American Golf don't have it any more. Not sure how they want to sell stuff if it's online only. 

 

Although my Nike stan days ended in 2016 when they pulled out of equipment. I've kept a lot of their clubs but my Nike apparel collection has dwindled as it wore out - only product of theirs I buy now are Air Max, which are still the most comfortable golf shoes out there.

Always felt like the TW branding also has that risk of looking like a poser like someone mentioned. Not in shoes necessarily but clothing. Same with Jordan Golf for me.

 

What I disagree with is that there is anyone that could replace TW for Nike. Not Rory, not Ludvig, not anyone. The difference in brand recognition is exponential. I also don’t think Nelly’s contract is big enough to stay in golf for just that. It’s a sunk cost, though I’m skeptical of them leaving completely.

I could see them making Nike Golf their ”more affordable” line with Jordan Golf as the premium branded option. But saying that, it just doesn’t sound right with Jordan not being a golf first brand.

 

Greyson signing Tiger feels like a chihuahua flirting with a mastiff. I doubt they even have the distribution to make that deal potentially make sense. TM clothing line or Footjoy makes more sense to me.

 

What I’d like to see is the same fits J. Lindeberg gives to Hovland on Tiger. That would turn some heads.

Pretty sure he was already wearing something from their early lines back in the day. I think he's ready.

Just got off the phone with TW. He said hes done with the check brand. Hes had enough they wont make him new shoes for his crooked foot. Nike wants out of golf completely. They are scared of this ball rollback talk...weekend players hitting short into ponds not good for the game.  Will be tooo many broken clubs, ripped shirts and pants from anger of it short shots and inflated scores. Tiger thinkin about footjoy shoes with either no shirt or pants or join puma because his names tiger and puma is a big cat so it matches. Crazy times we live in. No TW in a Swoosh 😢

I see Jordan's on kids everywhere, but I have only seen a couple of pairs of TW shoes on the golf course. I wonder if his name moves enough merchandise to justify what Nike pays him. When they first signed him, I thought (and I'm sure they did too) that he might become the next Jordan type brand but it just hasn't happened.

 

Hard to imagine him in anything but Nike though.

Holderness & Bourne or Greyson would be a good demo fit, but those companies are relatively tiny compared to NIke. They'd need to pay him with equity. 

 

TaylorMade or Adidas have the money, I'm just not sure it's worth it. Why would TM launch an apparel line w/ a dude a few steps away from the Champions Tour? Nike grabbed a foothold by launching into golf w/ young Tiger, they didn't try to build a brand on the back of Tom Watson. TM would be better off launching w/ a young guy like Ludvig. Adidas already has Ludvig but if Tiger were to join, I'm not sure he thaws the cold war amongst the young people who align with either adidas stripes or nike checks.

 

But who knows. Perhaps Nike is lowballing him as he's nice as front and center as he used to be. Perhaps that lower offer brings other groups into play. I just don't think he provides as much value to these other brands as they might think.   

As Ryan Reynolds and Kim Kardashian are proving, equity is where the real money is. Combine star power with equity then flip the business in a few years. Tiger shouldn’t be concerned with getting a high annual salary. He should be trying to make massive exits and build huge equity.

Years ago when Bill Walton played for UCLA, UCLA had a shoe contract with one of the big makers. Apparently Walton couldn’t wear their shoes, didn’t fit his feet right or something. So they took the shoes he could wear and sewed the marking (Addidas stripes, Converse Star and chevron, etc) on the shoe he could wear. Let him have a shoe that fit, but still wore the company brand. 

If it’s true, it was probably fairly simple to pull off at that time.  No social media and no up close, high definition cameras. Don’t know if Nike could have put a swoosh on a FJ shoe or not. Probably be a lawsuit now. 

 

Tennis players use a repainted racquet all the time.  It's painted and stenciled to say it's a Head racquet, but underneath it's actually a Wilson.
