Tiger and Nike golf to separate after PNC? (*** MERGED ***)

Nice try Ti. Signs at Panera weren't put up until after it came out that young lady died. She died in September 2022. Panera put the signs up at some locations in late October of this year but only after the girls parents filed suit against them.

Nice try??? 😂 Like I knew that and was trying to deceive anyone. Love you and never change grm! 😊

*but I do appreciate the 411. Thanks, but perhaps next time just leave the “nice try” out tho? Haha

Fair enough. I'll leave it in this time though. For posterity's sake. 😁

Wouldn't surprise me. Nobody, and I do mean nobody, I play with wears anything with a TW logo.  All the products are over priced. Add in he is wearing FJ shoes and the amount they lay out must be dropping.

Well it’s £60-70 for a Nike shirt with a TW logo. £70 for a Nike polo is far too much. Makes footjoy look cheap.

Greyson is a big risk for TW, has he not seen how JT has been playing....

In the overall golf apparel business, Greyson is a tiny startup compared to any of the larger brands. Yes they are doing well, but overall business does not compare with Ralph Lauren, Peter millar etc.

I know Nike just laid off a bunch of folks and are looking to dump more folks soon. They could save a few million dumping Woods from the payroll, so not a bad move from a business standpoint.

Not like they don't have other folks rep'ing gear on tour.

A few million?

Nike moving from TW to Jordan and wont miss a beat...

This is it.  Nike can release retro Jordan’s without much re-tooling for a golf bottom.

The hope is Nike/TW come up with some sort of agreement to retro older TWs and keep the ‘20 in the line up.  That’s my go to shoe, personally and I’ve done a lot of customs with those!

But I won’t hold my breath.

Wasn't Bridgestone manufacturing the Nike balls at one point? Or giving Nike help? Forget the exact relationship but I'm almost positive it existed. So going to Bridgestone would make a ton of sense if that's what Tiger had been playing for years before. He has always been a guy that liked to stick to what he was using and not make drastic changes. I'm sure Titleist or Taylormade would have loved him in their ball (Taylormade especially because he uses their clubs) but he probably chose to stick to what he was used to

Yep, Bridgestone made Nike balls…

yeap the bridgestone and nike ball connection was pretty well known back then, you could see the similarities in the dual dimple design of the some of the original models

Nike still sold Roger Federer's signature shoe well after their deal ended.  Adidas still sells Kobe's signature shoes when he was signed with Adidas early in his career.  Granted no logos or references to the players, but if there is a demand for the shoes, it will get retroed.

As another aside, Nike is stuck in the 90s for some reason, where M means a polo you're just about swimming in. They're still cut so badly. Have gotten multiple for free, including one last year, and they all just sit in my closet untouched until they eventually go to goodwill. They're nothing special for the money, and ill-fitting to boot.

To be fair, it's right in the price line with the Greg Norman "Shark" brand.😃

Yeah…..that’s not been a premium brand in years. I wouldn’t buy Norman’s stuff on sale.

Absolutely. Norman gear reminds me of looking at the racks at the golf shops 20+ years ago. Next to the Ashworth.
Greyson is top notch. I have two jackets and wear them on the regular. I have quite a few Lulu jackets and actually prefer the Greyson’s.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and a few others would like a word.

It's likely Woods does not move apparel to the degree that justifies what Nike is paying him.  They are likely selling a lot of golf apparel that doesn't have his name on it.  Has Woods really spiked Bridgestone ball sales?  TM equipment?

Someone mentioned the Uniqlo/Federer deal.  $300 million over 10 years.  Uniqlo was looking to break out into people's consciousness, so you take a big shot like that.  Does Nike really need to pay big money to Woods to sell golf shirts?  Especially when a guy like McIlroy is probably more relevant to their target market anyway.

The big question is, if he leaves Nike, does his building get renamed?

My wife used to be in management at Nike Golf. I think it was 2016 or 2017 that almost 75% of all Nike Golf clothing sales were the plain solid color polo. The cheap one that 1/2 the courses use for employees or teams put their logo on. I’m sure it’s changed but I don’t think Tiger ever drove the clothing sales we thought and the TW brand always underperformed. Maybe the mock turtlenecks aren’t a great look 🤷‍♂️

Interesting insight but I’d guess that’s quite normal. The basic stuff will usually be the bulk of the sales and probably profit while the premium stuff has a higher gross profit. And Tiger’s impact is not limited to just stuff with TW branding.

Edit. I guess the interesting bit is that it’s just polos that bring in the money and not shoes, pants etc.

I'm certainly not up on the latest fashion trends anymore, but other than Air Jordans,  I can't recall any athlete's endorsements driving sales to such a rate that warranted the big payouts they command.  I'm not quite 50, so maybe Palmer, Dimaggio, Mantle et al. had major influence, but I wasn't around then.  I just have little recollection of an athlete having that oomph.  I always thought the college teams wearing a certain shoe were a better mover(although I did not like the money going only to coaches.)

I saw some of the numbers from the 2010-2015 era and he definitely moved the needle. He just never really had a style others wanted to copy. The early TW shoes (especially the ones with the free inspired soles) grabbed them market share

Anybody who wears clothes branded with some company’s logo or name, or who buys golf clubs because some pro uses them, deserves what he gets.

Nike’s investment in and promotion of Woods was not financial, it was basically what is now called virtue signaling.

You sure it wasn’t cause
