In the case of speeding up play, you can bet the farm that the backstop ball will be marked and cleaned after the other player hits.

What does that mean ?

That happens while is someone else’s turn. Not while everyone waits.

To the people on here claiming it isnt a rules violation, what version of the rule book are ye bloody reading?

The rule itself is perfectly clear and calls for a DQ.

If they do what Walker described, yes: "In stroke play, if the Committee determines that competitors have agreed not to lift a ball that might assist any competitor, they are disqualified."

But, assuming they don't do that, the rule only says "if a player considers that a ball might assist any other player, he may (mark the ball or request to have it marked)".

So the rule doesn't explicitly require the player to do anything. It's left to their discretion whether the ball will help or whether they want to mark.

From what I'm reading, it's only a DQ/penalty for discussing it with your playing partner and agreeing to help each other.

Exactly. Otherwise we’d lift and mark every tee ball in the fairway. Afterall it COULD keep someone else from rolling into the rough if hit.

The PGA Tour referees can stop this if they're directed to by their employer.

Serious question. What can they do ? DQ without proof of actual collusion ?

Ball Assisting Fellow-Competitor on Putting Green; Procedure for Referee If Competitor Does Not Lift Ball

Q. In stroke play, a competitor’s ball is in a position to assist the play of a fellow-competitor and the competitor is in a position to lift the ball under Rule 22-1 without delaying the fellow-competitor’s play. However, the competitor does not take any action to invoke the Rule. Would a referee be justified in intervening and requesting the competitor to invoke the Rule to protect himself and the rest of the field?

A. Yes. If the competitor were to object, there would be strong evidence of an agreement not to lift the ball for the purpose of assisting the fellow-competitor in breach of Rule 22-1. The referee would be justified in so advising the competitors involved and warning that failure to lift the ball would result in disqualification under Rule 22-1.

The official can ask that the ball be marked.

How likely are we to see a stopage of play. An explanation and then a mark ? 2-5 minutes at least yes ?

Without delaying the competitors play

That’s the key here. If there’s time. Yes. If not I don’t see the issue.

But it IS a rules violation. The only reason it isn’t enforced is because the players rarely say anything out loud to each other, and when they do, there is no rules official around to hear it, or if they do hear it they are too scared and gutless to do anything about it.

I the other player Says, “ hey tony, would you like me to leave my ball there or mark it?” And tony answers , “why yes fine sir, please leave your ball there so I might hit it if I come out of this crappy lie in the bunker too fast.”

THAT IS A RULES VIOLATION WHICH REQUIRES DISQUALIFICATION OF BOTH PLAYERS. It is collusion to aid tony in his shot and guess what....in this case it actually almost surely saved him a stroke. Is that fair to the rest of the field trying to beat Tony?? Of course not.

Meh, it doesn't matter in the end. No reason to revise the records books. Friggin Jack Nicklaus openly admits that he gambled on golf as an amateur, won amateur events after he gambled and was no longer an amatuer, and people just think it's a cool story. Nobody wants to strip his 1961 US Am even though he was technically ineligible to compete. Why? Because it doesn't really matter in the end.

Excellent point. And I like jack

And who would say that above. ? This is how that goes “ hey man you want a mark on that “? “ nah it’s good I’m ready “... cool.

I remember after the Finau incident, JT commented on the topic. He said something along the lines of that if a ball is by the hole, he is going to use it to his advantage and hit before its marked. Now obviously it rarely happens that your ball is stopped by another, but his comment rubbed me the wrong way. As for Jimmy, why say anything at all? What good is going to come from it?

Rule 6-7 can be used by the Committee to "draw the line."

Knowledge of the Rules is part of the applied skill set which a player must use to play competitive golf.

I read that as being for pace of play. No mention of what yardage line to mark or not mark.

Read Jimmy’s comments. Pretty dumb dumb dumb. Cringe worthy even. Nonetheless. Unless guys are actually saying the things his dumb dumb dumb self is saying then I stand by my opinion. I’ve never heard anyone say they leave a ball to help someone. In my experience it’s always to not slow down play.

Probably pretty common across most of the professional tours, however not something you should be openly admitting to or promoting on social media.
