Tiger vs. Phil in "The Match." **MERGED**

The money is irrelevant for most anyone on this forum...golf isn't a cheap pastime, and $20 doesn't go very far.

However, most of us already pay for television every month, and get thousands of hours of often dull golf programming...of which I watch way too much!

I think the issue is that we're paying two ultra wealthy athletes (whose lives won't be affected win or lose) more than we've already given (if indirectly) over the past 20 years. They don't need the money...it would be like Warren Buffett asking us to buy him lotto tickets!

I'll watch the free highlight show on youtube on saturday.

You lost me at saying the money is irrelevant only to go on about money.

20 bucks is "only" 20 bucks.

But, let's say you go get lunch for 20 bucks and it stinks. Then, you be like,

"I can't believe this crap is 20 bucks"

Which is what you'll be saying watching Phil and TW hit balls in the trees and making corny jokes ; )

Great post BSC and right on the money. $20 is nothing in the big scheme of it, but the value, intrinsic or extrinsic, just isn't there for most of us. I'd rather spend $20 on that "crappy lunch" with you and a few WRXer's instead--- at least the conversation would be interesting and likely very entertaining :)

And the more I consider, the more annoying these guys are.

9MM money grab with "some" of the money going to charity?

We the people, who rooted for these guys for 20 years, have to pay to see them drag their fat, tired, butts and boobs, around making little jokes?

George is getting angry!

I get some people not wanting to see it. However, if you are a lifelong Tiger fan and do not like Phil or if it's the other way around, then maybe you have a keen interest in seeing this.

If this was real, yes. However, it isn't real. It's a TV show, scripted and forced.

Not real? Scripted and forced?

Was there news that this was going to be scripted or what are you basing these ideas on?

Planned "trash talk," faux challenges, unnamed gimmicks to keep viewers' attention, skill levels that we know at best are not equal and at worst horrifically lopsided, two older golfers forcing a competition that is really just a mapped out sports entertainment program, etc. i could get really down on this whole thing and embarrassed for these teo legends stooping to perform as clowns for big money, but I won't. I choose not to pay up.

Okay so it sounds like you agree it's not actually "scripted' like a sitcom.

Of course there are going to be some plans and ideas about what to do, like when a boxer has a walk out song, etc. That doesn't make it "scripted and forced".

I respect your right not to watch it. I don't expect it to be an amazing amazing show. But I think it could be decent. Phil is a character and a good showman and Tiger is Tiger.

What's funny is that when it happens there will be a thread on here at least 10 pages long discussing it. I don't see why people have to be so negative on it. Why is it so polarizing? Because they are already rich and playing for $9 million that isn't theirs (yet)?

That literally describes the PGA Tour. A bunch of rich guys playing for millions every week.

Did Stormy Daniels signed up yet to drive Tiger around the course topless? Just checking.

so how much is Phil going to win by ? I mean im pulling for Tiger but lets be honest ... He doesnt stand a chance in this deep field .... I mean im hoping Tiger can play well and stay healthy ...But lets be real , Jaime Diaz has a few doubts on Tigers enthusiasm level , and hes certainly an authority on Tiger...Afterall he has an inside track to pick Rosefortes mind.... Man im pulling for Tiger.. Hope he can make it through all 18!!

This does not literally or even vaguely compare to a PGA Tour event. Those guys earn their money. This ain't that.

I don't like crass commercialism. This is it. But it isn't important, and certainly not polarizing, lol. People like different things and different people. Some think Phil is the next Bill Murray, some think he's Mr. Rogers. But I do think it's great that there is an audience for this so-called match. I hope it does well and is everything they say it will be.

On a website where the average person owns 24 driver shafts, 36 putters, 4 rotating sets of irons, 29 pairs of golf shoes, 8 different shades of white belts, and special outfits for every degree from 50-90 but heaven forbid we spend $20 on two of the greatest golfers of our time. I would venture to say that the average person on here averages $20 a day when they figure how much they spent on golf for the year. I don't care if tiger and phil have a pillow fight with pillows stuffed with hundreds while wearing high heels, I'm watching it. I don't care if they use each others clubs every other shot, I'm watching it. I will bask in its glory and know that this is a moment that I will never forget all while wearing my $60 Tiger vs phil t-shirt and tiger print underwear.

Very well said. I understand the hesitation some have, and I respect that. But heck, $20 is not much to most member of this board. But whatever......

Now I will say this better be commercial free. If we are subjected to commercials in addition to paying, I won't be a happy camper.

This is true! It's amazing how many who don't care anything about this match ...take the time and effort to type the words telling all who will listen...how much they won't watch the match!! Yay right! I'll watch and when one of them wins 9 million and gives nothing to charity ...I'll like it even more!!!

"This ain't that"...well I guess when you put it that way...

These guys are earning their money. Some big companies felt it was worth putting up $9 million. A Tiger vs. Phil match's perceived market value has risen to this high number, that's all. We should be celebrating that golf and these golfer's economic value is considered that high.

A lot of money will go to charity just like it does at PGA Tour events.

Of course this lacks many of the components of a normal PGA Tour event, but some of the basics are the same. Professional golfers playing for a large purse on TV. Sponsors putting up the cash.

This is not "crass commercialism". You can make a strong argument that the PGA Tour is just disguised commercialism. If the money dried up, and there weren't millions of dollars to be made, the whole thing would disappear overnight.

How do you feel about Jack Nicklaus making ~$30 million a year for the past 10 years, mostly without lifting a finger (the majority of his earnings coming just from licensing his name and likeness to other companies)? Crass commercialism?

If this match is entertaining and people get their money's worth and money goes to charity, what's wrong with that?

For $20? Absolutely watching it -- especially if some of the money goes to charity. Heck, $20 is the cost of one good bourbon tax, and tip nowadays.

What part of $20 do some of you not understand? its not the amount, its the principle. These two are only playing because of the money they are being paid. Its a money grab, not much different than a scam. Both are past their prime. Oh but they will be "miked up". It will likely sound like a bad script. Phil will talk about about missing his shot 2 grooves too high, Tiger will talk about precision demands of his own equipment. I say Horse hockey

Shells world of golf was classy, people could attend the matches and viewers could watch from home. The skins game was another one. There was some "skin " in it. Players could leave empty handed. It was on Tv the weekend before the superbowl and it included 4 of todays PGA players. The there was Golf primetime Tiger vs Duval, Tiger vs Sergio.........None of these cost the viewer anything.

For over 20 years we have been fans and now we have to pay to see them "act"....because it will be an act and its already started.

Thanksgiving- they should be thanking us.

Without any doubt, I will not be watching

The portion going to charity? HA that's a laugh the amount will be to cover taxes on income ( either pay uncle Sam or give it to charity) Giving to charity looks better.

Thats how it works in the income stratosphere that these two play in.

What if it was a nickel? Or a penny? And you had to give it to UNICEF or the Salvation Army, get a receipt, photocopy it, and mail it in with a self-addressed stamped envelope?

What part of "I have no problem paying $20 to watch this because I genuinely like both players and look forward to taping it and watching it at my leisure" Do some of YOU not understand?

And just so you know: I would not pay $40 or more for this. But I will pay $20.

So they clearly priced it right for some people.

Without doubt I WILL be watching. But I don't think one iota less of those who choose not to.

Most of you guys lose $20 in Pro V1s each round you play, but moan about $20 for this match. So funny! Don't worry, sometimes I lose $20 of Pro V1s during a round also.

But 4 provs are better value than that exhibition

$60/dozen? Maybe if I forgot to bring balls to Pebble and was forced to buy them in the pro shop.

You can watch the Tiger/Phil match at my place for $30...I'll even throw in free parking!

And just so you know: I would not pay $40 or more for this. But I will pay $20.

So they clearly priced it right for some people.

Without doubt I WILL be watching. But I don't think one iota less of those who choose not to.

Obee!

The principle? Please tell me that you are consistent and do not watch professional golf, period. Do you really think they are not out there "playing because of the money they are being paid"???

You think Dustin Johnson wears all that adidas for free? : )

You think everyone on Tour is playing for the love of the game??

I swear some of you are acting like everyone on earth is living in perfect communism and this is the first example of capitalism you have to get upset at.

Goodness gracious. Do you picket outside Starbucks on the weekends? What a money grab!! haha.
