Tell me about your magic 3 wood

It's more of an economics thing for me right now really. I hit the 5 wood really well and can squeak it out there 230 on occasion. The courses and yardages I play (6200-6600) I typically don't really need anything that goes much further than that as the penalty is going to outweight the reward for getting there. I'd rather just hit my 5w 215-220 consistently and then leave myself a short wedge or pitch in. It hasn't hurt me. Plus, I work in the industry. So for what I could buy a good condition XR Pro I can PUD something shiny and new for basically the same price...and who knows, maybe that will be the new Stenson?

I recently added a Taylormade Rocket M6 with an AD DI 7x and it is fantastic off the tee and adequate off the deck. I play right to left with the driver so I prefer to have a 3 wood that is a left to right club for more control/accuracy and the lower spin of the 14* head allows this shot to still travel an adequate distance, but can be too low spin when playing a draw. Watching one of the Taylormade videos, Rahm was talking with Tiger and stated he likes his 3 wood to be his right to left club and prefers 16-17* of loft for that shot and still gets 280 carry if needed. I thought his reasoning was interesting and is what turned me on to a lower loft as I am looking to do the opposite as we play opposite ball flights.

Have you ever done a high level fitting? A lot of times that can help pinpoint your biggest issue and point you in the right direction.

Very under the radar - Cobra King F6 (stock RedTie shaft) - now set to 15.5*. Had a session at Club Champion several months ago, and they couldn't fit me in anything close to being better.

Callaway Optiforce with a D+ whiteboard. Never met anyone else who used one as it was an in between product release but it is cemented in my bag until the face caves in. I outdrive playing partners drivers with it and have total trust in it. Once it dies, I will bring the rbz tour 3 out of the shed.

Bought the club with a matrix shaft in it because I thought I'd be able to sell the shaft for more than the club. Didn't intend to keep the club. But I decided to hit it, well, just because. Hit it once and said "whoa". Hot it again and knew I had a keeper. Was in a 16 m1 that I really liked up to that point.

 

Matrix shaft got too high into the wind so I researched shafts to launch lower and spin less. Got it with the speeder.

I ended up cracking the face on the one I bought but TM sent me a new one. Cracked that one too and got another new one. That one has lasted but I have a backup ready should the current gamer crack.

I bought a m3 HL (17*) 3 wood to try to lose a little distance from my 15* Nike speed 3W. The thing is a rocket launcher, I lost no distance at all. Probably gained some.

Put a slightly shorter shaft in it to get in the 42.5" playing length territory and that change truly made it a weapon. Much more accurate

No, I have always just fit myself. My current three wood is pretty well optimized, I just always think it is the hardest club to hit due to the level of attack. Getting handle yanky with it results in worse things than a driver (hitting up) or a iron (hitting down). It is harder to "save" a shot with a bad swing. When my swing is good, it is just another club. If my swing is in a bad place, I wont even consider hitting 3 wood.

Not trying to sidetrack the thread though!

M3/M5 fairways are the best I have personally hit!!

I'm planning on getting fit for the new Cobra Big 3 Tour wood... hopefully going to build a consistent bomber that hits it 270ish and stops dead (I have the swing speed to achieve this). It will revolutionize the way I play my home course and consistently put me in scoring positions where my 3 wood is too short and my driver is too long. Holes 1, 6, 9, 11, (maybe 13 & 14), 15, 16... Hopefully at least 6 holes a round. Just needs to be straight! We shall see.

A rocket off both tee and fairway. It’s been a nice addition as a tee option, and it has changed the game for me as a weapon into par fives. Great shape, sound, and feel. Workable enough for a fairway.

Built a matching 5 wood at the end of this season, and it is just good but not great. Going to cut it down a bit for next season and see if that will help me better control the trajectory.

Exactly, I think this is one of the reasons the 3 wood can be so tough. For the slower swingers, most 3 woods are not going to spin enough to warrant using, hence the popularity of the "HL" 3 woods of the last several years. For the faster swinger, you need to hit a certain spin window based on shot shape preference. Yeah I think the only thing i've struggled with is weight. I tried to push the club to be too much of a "power 3 wood" and i've realized it just won't work without modifying the existing weights. Its a bummer that aftermarket weights aren't available and the ones on the club (mostly the heavier one) are made with that sort of rubberized tungsten so they aren't easy to modify like traditional steel or tungsten weights. I want to play it at 42.5" but even with a counterbalanced shaft it becomes too heavy. No matter though, I have reduced the length and will be repurposing it into a sort of power 5 wood utility role. Hah, I know what you mean. What weight XTS are you using? I have a wild XTS 100 that I need to find a place for.

One thing that I did was add hotmelt to the head. I don't remember what the head weight is now, but it helped me with the shorter shaft. I have the hotmelt kit from the hotmelt website. It's come in handy with a few clubs, and I've been able avoid some lead tape with some clubs. With the Speeder 8.3 and some hotmelt, it comes out to about a D5 SW with a playing length of 41.5" or 41.75". I can't remember the exact specs....I can get those for you over the weekend if you want.

V Steel TP paintbreak T/S 13* w Aldila Tour Blue 85s tipped a bit, 42.75". w/ NDMC grip plus a few wraps and D4 sw The lower loft, open face angle, combined with a heavier mid launch and spin shaft, work exceptionally well for me. Like Stenson, prefer this club for off tee usage and carry a 4 wood for gapping purposes for a few required shots off deck.

Nike SQ 2 3 & 5 wood itb and don't think they'll leave ever. Not much on eeking out a couple yards for something newer. I like the head weight and stability I get from them. They will get periodic shaft upgrades but that's it.

Taylormade aeroburner I got second hand, with the cheapest x stiff shaft they had at the pro shop. Three years and have changed every club in the bag except that one. Not the longest but a definite fairway finder. Makes me wonder why I’m always spending more money on clubs.....

I have tried it, I don’t like how much shortening the shaft lowers trajectory.

TM m6....fitted with same shaft as my driver (m6) cut to 3w length. First 3w I’ve ever gamed, and I’ve owned a TON of them that I hit just as good off the turf as off the tee. We all get fitted for driver...try it with the 3w. It helps!

I was stupid enough to sell of my xhot pro. And then, it became a long journey to find a "working" 3 wood for me.

I hope the journey stopped here with my TS2 HL.
