Do you admit when you hit a 'bad' shot the looks good?

From time to time I hit a really bad shot that if you did not know what I was trying to do ends up looking good. For the most part this going to be in my short game - for example hitting a chip thin and it takes a much lower trajectory than planned but still ends up tight.

 

I hit one the other day that got three "wow, great shots". I came clean with a chuckle and admitted I got lucky. Do you fess up when this happens? I would say I almost aways do unless I am in match and keeping my mouth shut is part of my strategy.

I actually take pride in getting away with a shot that I know I hit bad.

If i execute the shot as I have laid out in my mind but just don't quite catch it clean more times than not,, I still get an ok result. I fully admit I got lucky.

I take pride in my skanky shots that work out.

Depends on the competition. With good players I'll say something like not what I trying to do but I'll take it. With not so good players, I keep quiet. Seems like a jerk move to start explaining how a shot that turned out great wasn't planned when those players struggle to break 100.

Yes you have to be careful about the jerk factor. I play with lots of higher handicaps that congratulate me for hitting a green with wedge even if I am no where near the pin......Just smile and say thanks.

My saying (and probably others' too) is golf is a game of quality misses. I have my share every round.

I tend to call them 'value' shots as in - I got allot more out of it than I put into it.

conversely, I flushed a 4 iron the other day right at the stick and my playing partner says to me “ahhh a little chunky there mate”....

Nothing wrong with being honest with yourself and others. As was mentioned early, golf is a game of misses. The better your misses, the better your game.

Like David said, I almost always report (with some pride): "Well, that was a good miss."

Depends on the crowd. With some of my buddies I'm not afraid to call it out. I hit a shot a few weeks ago that I thought I hit terribly that ended up inside 10 feet. My buddy was watching from a different angle and later asked "were you trying to play it that way??", to which I quickly smiled and said "nope." Sometimes it's not how, it's how many.

Late afternoon Hitting into the setting sun, glare coming off the green in a club tournament, still in my finish position on a par 3 and I said, “damn, hit that thin and too low, but the line is good”.

We couldn’t find the ball and as I began the unlikely walk toward the hole a playing partner said to look in the cup. It was there. My only Ace and it was a thin cut that none of us saw land.

As I took the ball out of the hole I said “THAT, was a good miss”. ?

I'll always admit it if was a bad miss, but be careful that you don't turn into "Can't Take a Compliment" Guy.

There's one dude at my club that will basically tell you everything that was wrong with any shot you compliment him one that doesn't go in the hole. Given that he's a something like a 12 handicap, he can be pretty maddening to play with ...

Oh I admit it for sure haha, my first birdie back after the layoff was a great drive, followed by a bladed 50* to five feet and made the putt. "thin it to win it"

You can say to your partner(s): "that was a sister-in-law shot......I'm on, but I shouldn't be." My brother-in-law didn't know what to make of it the first time I dropped that one on him.

If I get good results, I don't care what the shot looks like. I've hit drives that don't get 6 ft high, and have ended up perfect, and I've killed drives that end up OB.

Yes, even if the result turns out good, if its a crappy shot then its a crappy shot and I admit it.

I hate it when I hit one like that. I hate even worse when my golfing partner(s) does it to me. Its irritating!

My habit would be to say "lucky" or I hear myself say " good miss" . I am the guy who would rather strike the ball well as intended than score well by luck

Maybe sometimes. But as others have pointed out, don't want to be "that guy" too often. And I play with a bunch of guys who will give a "nice shot" on anything that goes generally forward in the right direction. And one particular partner gives me the "well done" when I miss an 8' putt by less than a foot. So I've gotten used to that stuff, they are just trying to be nice so I don't want to correct them all the time.

Related - I probably had a career round of "good misses" and lucky breaks on Sunday. Posted a 75 which could have easily been mid 80s or even higher. Had 4 or 5 mishits that ended up finding the middle of the green. And another 4 or 5 tee shots that bounced off a tree in the correct direction. I'm sure I'll pay for it later this season though....

All the time. My buddies hate it. Results are for competitions. For random rounds, how the ball got there is more important to me

I’ll admit it every time, but actually, I need to learn to shut up and take the result. I’m turning into the guy that complains after every shot if it wasn’t perfect. Good thing is, I’m noticing it and will change it. In those rounds where I am the better player (which is seldom as a 19), it comes off extra arrogant and I don’t want to be that guy.

Playing with my buddies, another story. I’ll taunt them if they give me a hard time, „your flushed shot isn’t closer that my chunky wedge, so shut it“ ;). All in good fun.

But I’m super afraid of getting my first hole in one off a terrible shot. I‘ll take it, but it will haunt me.

Playing this week I had a shot from the green side rough on an upslope where the ball was REALLY fluffed up. It was tight to the pin so all I wanted to do was just get it in the air and move it about 2 yards forward. I'll be darned if my club didn't literally go right under the ball and the ball didn't move at all. Out of frustration my forth stroke was immediate and actually finished inches from the cup. As I walked up to get my ball my friends asked "Did you just wiff it?" Yea... its a bogey.
