Sign of the times: Tiger Woods vaults past Jordan

Spieth in world ranking

Tiger Woods didn’t hit a shot last week in Las Vegas but still climbed to his highest position in the Official World Golf Ranking in four years, moving to No. 13 and one spot ahead of Jordan Spieth.

Oddly worded. He's "vaulted" back to where he was after the Tour Championship. Xander passed him when he won the China WGC, which dropped him to 14th.

The field for Tiger Woods' Hero World Challenge features 16 of the top 23 players in the world — for now

Sixteen participants were announced on Thursday and it's a particularly elite gathering of golfers. Led by World No. 1 Justin Rose, four of the top five, seven of the top 10, and 16 of the top 23 have committed to play Nov. 29-Dec. 2 at Albany, Bahamas. Here's the list:

Justin Rose (1) Dustin Johnson (3)

Justin Thomas (4) Bryson DeChambeau (5) Jon Rahm (8)

Rickie Fowler (9) Tommy Fleetwood (10) Jason Day (11)

Xander Schauffele (12)

Tiger Woods (13) Tony Finau (15) Bubba Watson (16) Patrick Reed (17) Webb Simpson (20)

Assuming everyone else in the top 23 turned him down, who gets the final two spots?

I doubt Sergio and Phil will be there.

#29 Kuchar

#38 Poulter

#39, Barnrat,

#40 Adam Scott (he's skipping all Australian events this year)

#41 Li

or do they go all the way down to #107 and take Cameron Champ?

Pretty sure Champ isn't eligible. The sponsors invites must come from the top 50.

Tiger can't invite just any old buddy for the free OWGR points. Unless the name of Tiger's buddy is "Tiger".

Kuchar will get one sponsors invite, the other invite can go to anybody. Im pretty sure Adam Scott is a member, so that wouldn't surprise me.

C.R. + Basic -

You guys ever locked horns like this before?

Just goofing around ; )

It's entertaining, keep it going!

Say something remotely insightful / truthful about Tiger that isn’t by definition glorifying him as the goat saviour… and the “entertainment” will continue…

;)

C.R. -- Was Tiger the greatest amateur of all time? Lets look at the results:

  • 1984 Junior Worlds Champ
  • 1985 Junior Worlds Champ
  • 1988 Junior Worlds Champ
  • 1989 Junior Worlds Champ
  • 1990 Junior Worlds Champ
  • 1991 US Junior Am Champ and Junior Worlds Champ
  • 1992 US Junior Am Champ
  • 1993 Us Junior Am Champ
  • 1994 US AM Champ, Western Am Champ and Pacific NW Am Champ
  • 1995 US AM Champ
  • 1996 US AM Champ, NCAA Champ, NCAA West Regional Champ and Pac 10 Champ

How does that Amateur career stack up for you?

If I’m honest I couldn’t say with any degree of certainty where it “stacks up” as I haven’t taken the time to objectively / subjectively compare the very best amateur careers against each other. From what I do know, he’s certainly had ONE of the best.

And I can see from the flow of the previous conversations this rare insight you posted was a breath of fresh air. So thanks!

I’d say you have to look at Jack Phil or Spieth to even get close. Jack probably has similar stats. But maybe short. I guess if you want to go all the way back to the greatest am (,Jones)then maybe he has the best? Of modern players Spieth has 2 us junior ams I know and an NCAA. I don’t know if any of the modern us am winners are multiple winners much less any who have a junior and a regular us am. Phil probably the other guy who’s closest . But I guess debatable if he’s “ modern enough “ to say he’s if.

For me the fact that Tiger won 3 US Junior Ams in a row and then followed that up with 3 straight US Ams is pretty hallowed ground.

Yep. I agree. Don’t have time to look up everyone’s stats now. But I’d be shocked if even jack were close to that.

“I’m certainly more appreciative of the game of golf and what it has meant to me and what it has allowed me and given me the opportunity to do,” Woods said. “You know, 20 years ago was a totally different deal. I was trying to just play and compete and beat everyone. Now I’m appreciative of having the opportunity to come back and play again. I’m just so thankful to be part of the game of golf as a competitor again.”

"Appreciative, thankful", blah, blah....so lame. Tiger gonna bake a batch of cookies and give 'em out to his competitors before tournaments soon.

That would actually be a pretty boss-level power move... Tiger walking up to his fellow competitors in the locker room before the Masters, in a pair of red Nike ankle socks and boxer briefs, stares 'em directly in the eyes and says, "Yo... You want a cookie?"

A bag of left-handed junk.
