Marketing Works All I See in Bags Are....

FourTops

Recommended Posts

All I see in bags are Cally's and TM's. After that the percentages drop like an anvil. Have you all seen the same thing? I RARELY see Pings anymore...in the 80's and 90's it seemed like everyone played some variant of Pings. I hardly ever see Mizuno irons...even the forged CBs. And don't bother with Wilson or Cobra...at least where I play...ZIP. It's a shame because there's so many great clubs...but hey, maybe I'm missing the boat?

Taylormade is heavy where I live, Ping/Cally/Titleist are popular too.

I've never seen a Srixon club in person. I have not seen a new Wilson club in someones bag in 10 years.

I'm the only person that I know who has Cobra clubs. Our club champion plays older Mizuno irons. I've also never seen a new Mizuno club in a golfers hands.

I think 99.6 percent of golfers have Odyssey or Ping putters though, lol.

Makes sense. They make very good putters.

Yep just you. Plenty of variety in person wherever I go and especially my area. Tons of different setups on wrx. I also don’t prescribe to latest is greatest mentality but I do often give new equipment a try and it’s better than I put it in. I think most on the board are that way.

Agree, aggressive marketing does work.

Odd, but I have no Callway in my bag now. I once had driver, fwys and irons, and may still have a driver next year, depending on Epic Flash.

But now it's Ping driver, TEE fairways, Mizuno Irons, 2 Ping wedges, and an odd collection of putters - which stable recently added a Odyssey 7s Red - but it's not in the bag.

Depends where you go. At my club Ping is easily the most numerous driver and irons followed by Titleist and Taylormade. Rarely see a Callaway club at our place. See more Mizuno and Wilson clubs than Callaway.

The vast majority of golfers scores will not change with their choice of irons. Might be simple economics. Callaway and TM can be found at heavy discounts. Ping and some other brands of irons are almost never discounted new.

Marketing is key to OEM success, but marketing a brand is not the important part. Through marketing the OEMs have collectively convinced millions of golfers to replace perfectly good clubs with the newer generation of clubs which are usually not materially better and often not as good as the club replaced. A number of ploys are used, depending on the OEM. Every new Taylormade driver is 10 yards longer than the previous generation. More tungsten in the 718 AP2 than the 716 AP2 For Ping it's even more than elastamer, whatever the hell that is. It's because people buy into this nonsense that OEMs remain profitable. .As the bad guy in the Magnificent Seven said of the villagers, if God didn't want them sheared he wouldn't have made them sheep. It applies equally to the club buying public.

Over the roughly 50 years I've played golf I've seen a gradual evolution of equipment that has made the game easier, but it has been very gradual. With very few exceptions there has been nothing new introduced in that time that is calculated to have a material effect on the score card. Those exceptions would be the replacement of the wound ball with the modern ball, and the advent of the oversized driver. Other than that the clubs I was playing in 1980 are equal to the clubs I play today in every material sense. Nevertheless, right around this time of year the fever increases. Golfers clamoring to "upgrade their bags" until a new "upgrade" comes along. Please OEM,take my money. That is the real tribute to marketing genius.

I see a lot of Callaway and Taylormade, but Ping drivers are probably at the top of that list. The g400 lst and max were hits at my club. I'm curious to see how that changes next year with all of the new driver releases. Titleist TS is starting to catch on, and the Epic flash will most likely be a hit based on the popularity of the epic and rogue drivers in my area.

I feel like a lot of the guys around gravitate towards what works for the local tournament winners. I'll pay more attention to that as the season ramps up in the Spring.

Do you know what else works? Aggressively stocking the shelves of local distributors with your products. Taylormade and Callaway do that better than anyone around here.

Srixon, Mizuno, Wilson definitely, you likely need to special order

I think that is far more likely to be the main cause than marketing, though marketing IS very important

Guess I'm strange, I never look to see what brand/model clubs others have in their bags. I kinda get annoyed just seeing others bags with Titlist, Callaway, Taylormade, etc. plastered in big letters down bags' sides. I don't like advertising for others unless I'm getting paid for it.

Unless you have a “card” youʻre not getting paid to play the OEMs anyway.

Id say callaway has definetely taken the lions share of bags i see from driver to putter. Tm has a good stake in the driver and wood market and in the 12-15 hc range with irons.

However, i do see a lot of mizunos where i play, mainly the mp64 and the jpx ez or whayever it was.

I never see newer cobras and actually see quite a few of the d300? Wilsons.

In regard to tm, rocketballz are in that 50 year old plus bag and to a person they swear by them

In most lower hc i see titleist 716 more than anything. Only one 718cb and numerous 714ap2

Putters: scotty rules followed by ping and odyssey but i do see a lot of older tms

It depends on the group I’m playing with. A lot of high handicappers in my leagues play Ping/Callaway/TM but the lower caps and the guys in my tournament flight play more Mizuno and Titleist. In a weekend tournament I may never see a set of TM or Callaway irons but come Monday league I probably have one of only 2 sets of Mizuno in play.

+1 I would agree with that

In an age where everything is great, you do what you have to in order to get clubs in consumers hands. Not really rocket science...

I don't pay much attention to what other folks are playing.

I did, however, go out Saturday after Thanksgiving as a single and got paired up with 3 guys from Iceland.

They all had ping irons and woods. I asked if ping was the dominant brand in Iceland and they said no. Was interesting that all 3 of them were decked out in it tho.
