Smoking while playing

Recommended Posts

I smoke 2 cigars while playing 18 holes, usually 1 per 9. Once in a while I'll have one post round. I enjoy it and it relaxes me.

If you smoke while playing and don’t chuck your butts on the ground but put them in a bin or ashtray that’s fine by me but “dipping” is just disgusting and even more so when they spit . I don’t play lots of social golf so the idea of smoking weed when playing is foreign to me but why waste a round of golf and feel the need to get high.

There is lots of information about the issues of smoking but if you decide that you know better then go ahead and have another cigarette or cigar and put another nail in the coffin and when you have one of the multitude of cancers associated with tobacco blame someone else for your choice and don’t worry your family and friends will soon forget about you.

I don’t associate with a single smoker (cigarettes or weed). I only play with people I associate with. Hence, this is a non-issue in my world.

I can't imagine this ... You're missing out dude.

Not even an exaggeration tatertot. Mom smoked for 30+ years, and quit cold turkey after my grandmother (who had smoked most of her life) lost a lung to cancer. Step father is a hardcore drug user. Spent the formative years of my life surrounded by booze and smoke. Vowed I would never spend my adult life in the environment and I’ve kept that promise. I know what I’m missing. I choose my own path.

Good on you man, I lost my grandad to lung cancer, and he went back to smoking the day he got out of the hospital the first tie.

I just can't imagine not playing with strangers ... Some good days on the course spent with total strangers that gave become good friends.

I don't care for any of it. Cigarettes or cigars are stupid to smoke, but if you do it well away from me it is your suicide. Dipping is disgusting. Weed is illegal and I don't want be around illegal activities. If it is medicinal then it is legal and not much to say about that.

weed is legal in alot of states actually.

Only because the feds are not enforcing federal law. If they decided to enforce then state laws wouldn't matter. Probably won't happen, but you never know. I still don't care to be around anyone high or drunk period (on the golf course or otherwise).

I dont mind any of it to be honest. Have a few friends who smoke, chew and smoke the mj. Here in California, the weed smokin is getting more and more common on the course, I've seen older gentleman spark up some of the largest joints at both public and private courses. Ill smoke once in a while but I dont really enjoy to during the round, just like I dont drink during the round. As long as you are polite about it, I dont take any sort of offense to it.

Mostly PING clubs, with TaylorMade woods.

So, to answer your question, none of that bothers me. I'll be 68 in March, so besides playing for 54 years now, I guess the best thing I can say is that these things typically don't directly affect me. People generally are courteous enough to not try and purposefully bother someone else with a habit. And I've found that reciprocally if I don't judge someone else for what they do, then things go pretty smooth. So as long as they respect the course and keep it clean, and we respect each other, it's cool.

Enforcing such laws are money drains for the FED. That said, I agree that drunk people are annoying.

The weed smokers are not going to draw attention to themselves can’t see this effecting a sole.

Nah. Plenty are stupid.

I saw a 4 some with 3 carts last weekend. One cart had one of those covers on it and they had smoke rolling out of it just like a cheech and Chong movie. They came backwards up the 9th fairway looking for #1 tee while my group was on 9. We directed them to 1. Baked out of their gourds. Then the back group in our skins game said they saw them flip one of the carts on 5 when they were on 17 ( two holes loop close to each other). They called it in and they were booted from the course with threat of calling the cops. Seems 1 was maybe fit to drive them all home. Surprise. The guy who was in the 3rd cart. Guessing he didn’t partake and didn’t want to be trapped with the other 3 ?

Anyway. Point is. I get what you’re saying. Smart folks you’d never know. Same fro most vaping. But there’s always that one guy who looks like a locomotive...... and I don’t want to breathe whatever substance he’s omitting.

Crap, I just realized I am taking my first trip to California. I have never been to a dispensary, might have to see what this is all about. I hate drinking, but used to partake back a few years.

Also, I think I might do an instructional video on how to field strip your cigs so you can throw the butts in the cart. tobacco on the ground no one cares. paper and filters? like putting coffee grounds down the disposal of a friends house. Cigar butts are even worse. put them dudes out and then throw them in the cart or a trash can or something.

throw them in hte back of the cart. when you take your bags off, clean out all the butts. or put the suckers in your pocket. it's not rocket surgery.

Funny, the course is pretty much the only place I smoke. There is usually a pack in my bag and that’s where they stay. I am very conscious of my non smoking fellow players and would bet most don’t realize that I had a smoke or two.

As for weed there are more and more places where it’s legal but I’m pretty sure it is illegal to use it in public is all of those.

I know people who do at least 3 of the 4 during a round.... the only thing that really gets me is cigar smoke, it just seems to linger in a big cloud. I don't really know anyone that vapes the nicotine vape that looks like a fog machine, just the mj. Occasionally we clam bake in the covered cart, but yeah, playing with strangers/randoms? I generally try to be somewhat courteous.

100% agree. I don't smoke much, but do enjoy them on the course. I've had multiple playing partners comment that they notice that I field dress my butts.

I used to pick up others cause my hands already stink and need to be washed, but I can't bring myself to do it very often any more.

They just keep coming back anyways. I'm surprised the playing partners don't say something.

Just on the topic of the butts still, does it enrage anyone else when people flick them out their car window? Man that bothers me, half the time ya know the frickin thing is sitting right in my trucks grille or foglight just burning out in the wind. That and of course how all roads/sidewalks are just littered with them. When I had my Harley it was the worst you could feel the ash they were flicking out hitting you in the face, then eventually the butt comes flying. Oblivious to the fact there are other people on this planet aside from them.

I’m not a fan of cigarette smoke, find it very putrid. But by and large all the people I’ve played with who smoke are very conscientious about it, and honestly I usually don’t even notice.

Cigars? I like the smell so they don’t bother me. MJ, I honestly don’t know if I’ve encountered anyone on the course yet, but I’m pretty sure I would feel the same as I do about cigarettes, if I’m not smelling it constantly, I really don’t care (legal here).

Dip or chew. I did it for a long time, and several of my friends still do. Rarely will you ever see any evidence of it. Except when they open a new can of Copenhagen and hold it up so I can smell it, then ask if I want some. Which I still do, even after quitting 30 years ago.

I think like most things, it’s all in how people use them. Some are just obnoxious or oblivious, but I think most are pretty decent about it.

Oh yea. I’ve often said we should be given 4 govt issue grenades for that purpose a year. ( joke for those without a sense of humor ) Ash a cigarette out the window or throw a butt. Boom.roll a grenade under their car at a light. Problem solved. Vaping out the car window is just as bad. A couple times I’ve had to turn off the a/c , vent etc in my car to keep it outside. People just don’t care.

such a huge difference between a person grabbing a small vape pen once in a while (trying to get off cigs), and these kids with $100 rigs that blow cirrus clouds of cotton candy smelling garbage.

Not when it’s smoking out the window like the interior is on fire. It comes directly into the car behind you. I may as well be sticking my face into yours while you exhale.

Seriously. It’s not hate driven. It’s fact driven. It blows out and right into the dash vents of the vehicle behind.

Given a choice, I'd prefer not to share a cart with a cigarette or cigar smoker, but I can deal with it if I have to without needing to complain or scoff. Just about every cig/cigar smoker I've ridden with has been courteous enough to do their puffing while not in the cart at the same time as me, and to hold it off to the side while we're both in the cart. I grew up as the child of two cigarette smokers who constantly smoked in our house and cars until I was almost out of high school, so nothing the other player can do with their tobacco smoking during a round of golf could possibly be as bad as what I experienced growing up. If I'm walking and they are riding, or we have separate carts, they could smoke a whole carton over 18 holes for all I care.

However, as someone who has always been subject to random drug testing in my career, and can lost my job on the spot for a positive test, I don't want to be anywhere near a MJ smoker on the course. I know, the risk of getting a positive test from secondhand exposure is pretty nil, but I don't care to take any chances. I've been paired with people who openly smoked it on the course but fortunately I was either walking and they were riding, or I had my own cart.

Seeing big piles of cigar ash on greens does sort of bother me.
