I was embarrassed to be at Bethpage...

> I wanted to see if anyone here attended yesterday's first round , and if so what their thoughts were on the fans? I don't write very many posts on GolfWRX, but I have to say that attending Bethpage yesterday was pretty nauseating to say the least. I'm sure there will be people who throw around words like Snowflake, etc when they read this, but the etiquette or lack there of I witnessed yesterday was deplorable; and it was all under the heading of "Hey, I'm from NY". As someone who grew up on Long Island, I was embarrassed. I stood next to the tee-box on 7 watching Phil, Rory and Kisner come through and wanted to vomit at the stuff that was coming out of some of these people's mouths; and could only imagine what the players were thinking. Then Phil hit the restroom after he teed off, only to return to very specific and graphic questions about what he was doing in there.....there were some other choice remark as well thrown Rory's way.

> That being said, I think I'm venting more on the fact that this has become "acceptable" ... I guess it's just worse in NY because people think that being from NY they just have an excuse to be A--H---e. I was going to take my 5 year old to the tournament yesterday, but I though it would be to long a day for him . I'm glad I made that decision, as I'm not quite sure what I would have said to him at that point when he said, Daddy, why are they yelling those things at them? ...Maybe I just witnessed the worst fans of the week on that particular tee box, but something tell me I'm being being to optimistic.

> I just happen to see the Billy Horshell Incident last week on twitter, and I guess that's what also prompted me to write this. I was in 100% agreement with Billy and his reaction. Reading comments from people om twitter who genuinely believe they have the right to act, say and do anything they want is total Bull---t. Get some manners people...and If you can't control your self when having a few beers, then don't drink. I'm all for cheering, and a little heckling, but there's a line ....and if you don't know where that line is then stay home.

Well said, and I don't agree that heckling should be allowed. These are individuals trying to make a living. Nobody comes to their jobs and bad mouths them while they try to work.

I have never been to the Masters or many other tourneys for that matter, but I don't ever recall some one yelling "mash potatoes", or "ba ba boi" at Augusta. Why? I'm sure they'd haul you rump out of there and you'd loose your ticket and likely the right to ever come back. Other tourneys should do the same.

Which is why when we go on vacation and someone asks us where we're from, we say, "Western NY, 6 hours from NYC and we're nothing like those from the city." This often elicits a laugh and a response of "I know what you mean."> @bladehunter said:

True story. I have a good friend who lives in Lindenhurst NY. Ex nyc cop. ( retired) etc. I was up that way for work once and he coaxed me over to Long Island and we went out for lunch. He takes me to his fav pizza joint. As in standing there in line to order a slice , the guy behind the counter looks at us and says to my friend “ hey kev ... where’d you get this jerk*** at “. I literally hadn’t said a single word. I’m standing there. Wearing slacks and a polo .... clean shaven , with the politest intentions in my head. Before I could think I said “ where are you from.?Can’t be from NY... everybody is supposed to be so nice “. The guy cracked up. Lol. And That was that. Seems you just have to give it back. But I honestly wanted to reach across the counter. Rudest comment out of the blue ever said to me in person. Say that in SC and somebody needs to call the law. Lol. But apparently that’s just how people communicate ?

Knicks won't be relevant until they get a different owner. I mean 30 year olds probably don't really remember a time when they were good. Last I remember is Knicks vs Spurs in what '99, but I really do not remember the series. I am happy they likely won't get Zion. /rant

Exactly! More GBH is necessary to get the kind of society you want.

I would say it contributes. I have done regrettable things (mainly one thing) drunk that I would never do sober. Now, I just do not get that drunk at a public event like that. All about control.

The spectacle around Tiger's second shot on #1 today was insane. A**hats literally over his shoulder yelling at him.

GBH?

It’s not about more violence. It’s about the idea that the things that are now normal to put up with now are not ok. Would actually be less violence if there weren’t laws protecting idiots who need to be put in line. Rudeness used to be a social crime that was handled quickly by society. Now it’s illegal to do so.

Yeah, and there's a process involved for removing unruly fans. It does not involve a knee to the face and a trip to the ER. I do find it quite interesting how that suggestion came from an Englishman who wasn't even in New Orleans and had nothing to do with the event. And then Horschel's Twitter feed was flooded with more Brits telling him "good job Billy, let's assault the Yank fans." There seems to be an obvious agenda here.

As evident by tigers 1st hole today. Unruly fans rarely get ejected. Very rare. There were 300 people there that qualified for unruly. Society will be exactly what it’s allowed to be.

“New York is an ugly city, a dirty city. Its climate is a scandal, its politics are used to frighten children, its traffic is madness, its competition is murderous.

But there is one thing about it - once you have lived in New York and it has become your home, no place else is good enough.”

The Horschel incident has similarities to the rudeness and indecency of some of the PGA Championship fans. That is what it has to do with it.

Now, what Eddie said regarding violence... not sure what that has to do with this. I agree that calling on violence for rude comments is out of line, but the OP didnt say anything about taking violent actions against rude people.
