Masters honorary starters, who is next in line?

Ben Crenshaw for sure. Maybe Tom Watson. No way for Tiger Woods and agree he will play until he cannot and retire and ride off into the sunset. Greg Norman ..... no way. First off he will not accept being an honorary starter for the tournament he wanted to win most, a tournament he should have won on several occasions. Two, he has a huge ego and would never take part in a ceremonial role. Third, he never won the tournament. Maybe Mark O'Meara or Jose Maria Olazábal. Sentimental favorite might be Freddie Couples in a few years after he's no longer semi-competitive. Phil Mickelson maybe in 10-12 years.

We don't know their criteria so its impossible to know but Faldo is a good choice. Mickelson would be another when the time is right.

My best guess is that Tiger will be one eventually. To all of the naysayers remember that Jack was adamant for years that he would never be a ceremonial golfer. Things do change as a person ages. Someday it will be Tiger and Phil for sure.

Agree. Tiger has already softened up some from the cold edginess of his pre-scandal persona. Being a dad is a factor as well. I think he will further become more nostalgic and sentimental with age and when his competitive playing days are behind him.

Condi is already a member of ANGC and would shatter the racial and gender barrier...Annika is a deserving champion and well respected in the golfing community and beyond

What does it say about Augusta National’s appreciation for the city of Augusta when the 1987 Masters Champion is an Augusta native... and nobody at the club has any intention of making Larry Mize any sort of ceremonial figure? It’s kind of interesting if you think about it.

I'm no fan of Rice's politics or what she did when serving, but I think it would be great. I also think they should look that way in regards to the Ryder Cup captains. I think a Lou Holtz or W Bush would be great as captains.

Watson needs no reason to be there.

Floyd won the Masters once and is 77 years old. No chance he gets selected as an honorary starter at this point in time. Watson won the Masters twice and has double the number of majors that Floyd has. Only 1 less major than Gary Player. Watson had a much better record than Floyd ever did at Augusta. It's not even close. Faldo won the Masters three times with six majors total. Again more majors than Floyd. Crenshaw won the Masters twice. More than Floyd. One of these things is not like the other.

Like I said, Floyd is cool, and runs in the same group as the members at Augusta

 

Even though he isn’t old money, he runs in the same circles as the members there, and that matters. Nicklaus or Palmer were not members there because of their record.

 

Based on playing record, he is much more deserving than Crenshaw as well.
