Handicaps 10 - 18 - What type of irons are you playing?

I was playing Titleist CB 716. I had back surgery (fusion and 2 Laminectomies) No I can't play as much as I wanted too so I am switching to one length clubs would like to stay forged but the radspeed surprised me so for now I'm just acquiring assets for purchase but I haven't played a championship length course since the surgery been opting for Executive sized ones to be on safe side from a time on course end of things.

Handicap got as low as 12 when back started give way.

11.4 HC and I switched back to Nike VR S Forged, had been playing PXG 0211 (Gen 1).  The Nike straddle the line of Player irons vs game improvement.

Sitting between 15-18 and playing a combo set with Srixon 585/785 irons. Have no issues hitting the 785s even at a mid to high teen handicap.

Back in the day I  went from a 12-13 hcp to 7-8 hcp using Taylormade Burner plus irons . Winning a number of senior tourneys, 5 senior Club champ  in 6 years .  So thinking I was a great iron player I went down a rabbit hole playing blades , players cavity back some game improvement irons too many to mention . Game went to hell confidence was basically gone .  Hcp is around 15  I can still shot in the 70's now and again but it is rare and can't repeat good rounds . I picked up a another set of Burner plus irons late last fall and the iron game really improved , Only thing is my loss of club speed distance sure isn't there now .

I just picked up a set of Taylormade Sim 2 OS irons . I haven't played them yet hoping they will give me the distance and and confidence to get down to a 12 or 10 hcp I would be happy with that .

Play to around a 16 at the moment.   I've been pulling driver even when the course layout says to hit driving iron - just to get more driver swings under my belt on the course.  I'd probably drop a few strokes if I used driving iron off the tee on 3-4 more holes per round.

Mizuno MP54 have been in my bag for a few years.  Mizuno JPX 825 Pro before that.  DG X100 shafts in both.  I've hit the MP18 and MP20 range, and (for the moment) I'm happy to stick with my MP54s...

I've been around a 10-12 forever, seemingly, though trying to break into single digits is still a goal.

I like player's cavity backed irons, forged if possible, with a reasonable amount of offset. I tend to use these in 6-PW while carrying GI irons for my 4/5 iron spots.

Current set is Srixon 765's

Prior set was Callaway X Hot Pro/X Forged combo set

Before that was Srixon i506's

These irons are not intimidating in any way. They are plenty forgiving actually. I look at models like the T100 and wonder how anyone can feel comfortable looking down at those. It's the lack of offset mostly, I guess, but they have me shaking in my boots.

I've tried playing cast cavity backed irons many times in the past. My results are about the same but my enjoyment isn't. I don't like the lack of feedback.

Forgiveness without feedback seems like the wrong road for someone who is constantly trying to improve their swing. I figure the things I learn about my swing from practicing with a slightly less forgiving mid iron is probably helping me understand my swing better which translates to better driving and wedge play too.

Now an 11.4. Change between Apex 19 pro combos or G410s. Apex 19s look and feel better, the Pings are more forgiving.  Starting to play better so the Apex 19s are the gamers for now. Also need to send the Pings in for repairs as a couple of the shafts have come loose (Recoils).

you and I are similar.  I started playing in 2011. Bought my first set of clubs with the TM Burner Plus irons.  Within a couple of years I was low 80's, in the high 70's a few times.  Decided I was good enough to play a players Muscle Back irons.  For the first couple of years I continued to play a ton and played well.  Then grad school, jobs and life has taken some time away and I struggle to hit them consistently.  I often dream about the days when I was on the brink of breaking 80 each time I played while using those TM Burners.  I think this summer Im going to get fitted for more of players game improvement iron like the 790 or Apex just to help with forgiveness and the lack of practice time.

When I first started playing some 30 years ago, I played Wilson Staff blades.   I always have bought clubs on look, feel.  Our 16 hdcp regular group member plays 2014 Apex Pros...he's tried numerous clubs and plays those as well as any.

It's the archer not the arrow, play whatever you're confident with and like the look of, it's more than half the battle.

I switched a couple months ago from MP54 for about 8 years in the bag to MP20 primarily because I needed a reshaft (was using KBS Tour R flex with a 90-92mph 6 iron SS...)

Still adjusting to the MP20 set and really like them but it's been tough to move away those MP54s!

It's not masochism at all.  They are easily the best performing and easiest clubs I've ever hit.  I would never want to play a club that makes the game harder.  And that's why I love them.  Honestly, there's really no "pain" in them.

BTW that set is my second set because I love them so much.  Again for reasons stated.

I would love to play a set of those some day, but Miura doesn't do many lefties and the few I've seen are not cheap.

<edit> I would LOVE a combo set of these. Oh yes, they will be mine some day...

Yeah it's unfortunate about the lefty issue, as they are wonderful clubs for any skill level golfer.  I encourage anyone to try them.  They have completely ruined all other irons for me, and once I got my second set I don't even want to play any of my other irons.

And yeah those are sweet lefty Miuras.  You can't go wrong with Miura steel.  It's top notch quality and feels sublime.
