How far do you hit your driving iron, REALLY?

I'm about 6 months ahead of you in this journey I guess.  I spent a few years trying different driving irons -- all the ones you mentioned.  I could hit them great some days but other days I'd have one or two bad swings where they killed my round (or I killed my round with them).  I actually had a few versions of the Srixon U series in different lofts and really wanted to love them.  Eventually switched to TM Rocketballs FW metals.  I have a 5 metal at 19 degrees that I almost always hit really well with no bad tops or hooks.  Realized that I have way more confidence with it and it makes the game much easier than the DI.  I also have a 22 degree F7 hybrid that I use as a 4i.  Much more consistent than the DIs and about 15 yards shorter than the RBZ 5 wood.  I'm pretty sure this end of my bag is pretty much set.  Can't imagine it getting any more consistent.  I hope you find what works for you.

Still have the Srixon 545 3 iron lying around?

It's at the club builders getting fixed. I am putting a PX 6.5 in it. Probably gonna sell it along with the rest of the Srixon irons. I'm not sure I'm mentally stable enough to keep a "backup" set around.

I'd buy the head from you to round out my set of 545s.  In NOVA.

I use a Mizuno MP-H4 2 iron as a driving iron. Though it wasn't marketed as such, it has a hollow-body construction and near-hybrid proportions, such I think it is still an apples-to-apples comparison. I play it at 1" over length w/ a DG x100 shaft.

Just making a "stock" swing, I average a 238 carry;  I almost never hit that "stock" shot though. I usually am either hitting a soft cut (my guaranteed fairway finder) to about 230 or a lower draw (for breezy days) that carries about 225, but will roll out significantly. I will also occasionally use it from the 235-240 range as an approach club. I've had times where I stepped on it for one reason or another and can get the total yardage up to 265 w/ rollout if I catch it cleanly (50/50 odds)

I have a MP-18 Fli Hi 3 iron.  It's bent weak (22 degrees) to match my set 3 iron.

I don't really use it off the tee unless the shot calls for 200-215 yards.  It's basically my 3 iron that's a bit easier to hit than the CB57 3 iron.

I average about 210 with it.

How far do you typically hit your 3 longer clubs? Hybrid, 5 Wood, Driver?

If you don't have a lot of speed I'd stay away from driving irons. They might be serviceable off a tee when you are swinging well but forget about hitting them off the ground. It's not worth carrying a club that you may use on a couple tee shots but won't be able to hit into long par 4's and reachable par 5's. Most high speed players choose a driving iron because hybrids launch and spin WAY too high which is unplayable in the wind and inconsistent in every other scenario. For average speed players hybrids are amazing in every situation. So are 5 woods.

I have a Titlelist 909 16* that is the longest club I have besides the driver.  Carry-wise: Off the tee 260-265, off the ground is usually 245 unless I step on it and the stars align.   I could never find a fw I feel better about.  Not that I've hit any lately, its truthfully the club I trust most when I have to hit in tight spots and not fear the hook ☠

I have a lot of swing speed. Driver is probably 285-305. I just dont necessarily have a super consistent path, so contact isn't consistent enough to effectively flush a driving iron I don't think.

I have high hopes for the Mizuno 16* hybrid. Might turn it down a bit and see what we're working with.

MP-18 MMC Fly-Hi 2i (16.5*).  KBS Tour C-Taper Lite 115X shaft.  Typically 240-250 off the tee, maybe more with good roll.

This club goes in and out of my bag depending on conditions.  I play this more in the winter and early spring, as courses are dry and it gets windy.

Its rain season now in FL, so its back in the garage.   Wet courses = no roll.    818H2 19* takes its place; same distance with higher flight and more carry.

I have a Titleist U510 1 iron - it's 16 degrees.

Arccos tells me that my "range" is 215m to 268m, with a 230m "smart distance" and a 273m longest shot.

From the tee I think of it as my 250m club. What's that - 270 yards? Thereabouts, anyway.

It's a really useful club - I can flight it down to keep under the wind, or get it right up and out there if the wind is favourable. Last time I used it off the tee I hit it with a big fade around a corner and ended up with 239m. That feels about right - I know that my idea of it as a 250m club is based on one particular hole which is a bit down-hill, and I know that the 273m drive was somewhat unusual. But the number of times I've run out of fairway when I measure trees at 240m away... yikes.

Just recently put a driving iron back in the bag. Cobra utility at 18*.

I have tried quite a few shafts but settled (I think) on a speeder 865 hybrid shaft.

Predominantly a tee club flying mid to low and 210-220 on good shots. I did get one to roll out this weekend to 250ish but that's mostly luck. Could probably get around the same distance off the ground just much less consistently. If I planned to play it off the fairway I might dial it up to 19ish degrees.

Driver ss is in the 105-108 range.

17* TM 790 with hzrdus 6.5 black shaft.  I hit it 290-310 off the tee and around 275-290 from the ground.  Straight rocket launcher. My only issue with it is if the swing speed is not up, it will not react correctly and becomes iffy.  I find my PXG 5 wood far out performs the driving iron on distance, accuracy and hitability.

DJ said he carries it 280 , rolls 300 ?

DJ driving iron   Golf channel

For the OP

this is absolutely my fav golf club And the most tenured in the bag - Have trackman and gps this club performance

Pedestrian me ;  area of 106mph with my 2i ( TMB 718 bent -2* to 19*loft  58* lie -1 of factory lie , AD DI 105x tipped 2” cpm 295, with enough hotmelt in the head it oozed out, length 40” D4)

Carry off the deck 240ish , off the box  I can gain some distance , stretch it to 250ish | total yardage - Even with good fairway conditions (my carry + roll) Im still short where the big boys land theirs at.  DJ carry 280 is incredible ???

I’m newly 40 , 6’3 , 240 lbs with 5-6 day a week gym habit

**edit ***

i bent to 19* bc at 17 it was cool / fun  off the tee but could be a bit more difficult off the deck , I carry no 5w so needed the loft to make it utilitarian.  At 17 it was a monster off the box ?.   19* less offset which is dead sexy to my eye

a pxi 6.5 shaft is tempting but it’s such a great set up I don’t want to fool with it .   The ad DI shaft really made it point and shoot

My Apex hybrid 20 degree is between 220-235 if I really step on it, 5 wood (set at 16 degrees) is around 240-250, and my driver is 270+ depending on conditions.

I hit my Srixon U85 2 iron (18º) with a Modus 3 105X shaft about 235 (avg. roll) on a normal swing (low 100's mph).  A mishit into the wind still gets 200. Hard ground decent shot easily gets 250.  With the stable steel shaft, I can really get after it though, esp. with a tailwind.  Then I can push into the 270's, sometimes close to 300 with a good bounce/roll and tailwind.
