More old news repeating today. Happened in late 2018 and Mickelson answered a question at the 2019 Masters presser about it. Jake Owen is a friend of YJS (they partner at Pebble in the pro-am) so it should be pretty obvious who invited him.

Jake Owen is a fool. At Pebble Beach each year, as Spieth's amateur partner, Owen tries to drive the  par four 3rd hole green. 

For amateurs the tee box is forward so Owen tries to cut the corner but twice I've seen him pull the ball left into a bottleneck of spectators (the 16th green , 17th tee box, 4th hole tee box all converge at the area where Owen lands his tee shot. He could kill a spectator , player or caddie.

Shot a 68 in 2015, not a lot of ams can go that low, much less in a tournament at Pebble.

I didn’t know who Jake Owen was until just now, but if you are going to call guys fools for hitting tee shots into crowds and not mention Phil you might, maybe, could be, most definitely are at least a little disingenuous. Guy has probably the second largest galleries on tour and routinely treats them like they are a pinball game.

Jake Owen is an amateur out there intentionally hitting shots into a crowd of people. He is a fool.

Mickelson (or any other pro) would never do that.

Ridiculous. Phil launches one into a crowd hourly, knowing full well it will likely hit a person and stop before getting into any serious trouble. Tour players have been using people as backstops since before Arnie’s day. I’m not saying this Owen guy isn’t a fool, he sure sounded like one in that clip. But if your reasoning is because once a year he hits a tee shot that ends up in the gallery then you have to include Phil there too, his frequency is far greater.

Understand that Tour courses are set up so that the gallery of spectators  is confined to out-of-position areas. Certainly Mickelson routinely hits errant shots that end up in the gallery, but he is not intentionally trying to put his ball there.

Oh yeah! I was at Pebble two years ago- I was standing near the tee box. I heard Owens say I m gonna kill this one! Not sure if he was talking to the ball or the crowd 250 yards away as I was on my 4th Cape Cod of the afternoon. LOL!

#1 Jake Owen is a fool for swinging driver from the 3rd hole forward tee box at Pebble

#2 he is a fool because (on the long shot chance he might hit the green) he is hitting into a green filled with players and their caddies.

#3 he is a fool because when he misses left (which he has done two consecutive years) his ball carries into the (16th green-17th tee box-4th tee box-3rd green) bottleneck of hundreds of people .

I actually saw Jake Owen hit maybe the worst shot I've never seen.  A few years back at the AT&T he waited in 18 fairway for the green to clear, you know, one of those classic amateur moments where the entire group is waiting on you, anyways, after several long minutes of everyone waiting he promptly snipe-snap-duck-hooked his 3w into the Pacific.  

 

It wasn't even funny, I felt embarrassed for him.
