Stack and Tilt... here I come?

Recommended Posts

Well it seems like the less and less I play and practice I find myself reverting to keeping the trail leg straight, weight forward and finishing lower.  All seem to be components of stack and tilt.  I've started watching videos and it seems to make more sense than not.  Better contact = better scores.  Looks like I need to dust off the old book.

I've tried it (perhaps not perfectly), and found that my front hip started hurting.  I had trouble doing it consistently as well.  Seemed I was always shifting the weight a little here or there.  My 'swing du jour' is the one taught by Brian Sparks.  It's a very relaxed swing that seems to put little stress on the body.  So far so good, but only time will tell.

Brian Sparks, crickey their is a blast from the past 🙂

All methods suck, but S&T is definitely one of the 10,000 “correct” ways to swing a golf club according to The Golfing Machine.

One of the most frowned upon methods on this community these days. But threads were infinite when the S&T thing was the next great thing in golf a few years ago. That’s how fickle here a GolfWRX we can be.

All jokes aside,  if it works for you go for it.

Playing today and using the fundamentals of stack and tilt, as in keeping more weight on your forward foot and a straight back leg actually really helped my ball striking

Why? If it works for this player, then they should use it. It's not about what's in vogue or lost steam but how effective it is for someone. There are still a lot of teachers that use it. It can't be completely crap or it wouldn't still be taught and used. I have friends that use it and are very good, single digit players. Should a PGA player use it? I don't know....Maybe not. But for us average hackers it seems to help a lot of players.

Just reading the book or watching the videos is not enough. Go see Andy Plummer or a certified S and T instructor.  While there is a system, it is applied differently for the needs of each player. There are no limitations in the system whether it is short irons or drivers. It also will not cause pain more than any other golf swing. A lot of golf instruction on youtube or instagram adopts stack and tilt stuff that has been around for years. Get someone who understands the system and you will improve.

I strongly urge one to look elsewhere. Why not do a virtual lesson with monte here ?? He offers affordable video instruction and he is a great player who is looking to go into q school champions tour.

Why are you so opposed to it? Why not let him try it for himself?  There is no one method above all (even Monte's).  If there was then we wouldn't see people constantly switching methods every few years.

I don't even think the GolfWRX community would agree on the consensus best method to learn the swing.

Then go with a golfing machine instructor...stack n tilt isnl done.. was not effective in longer clubs. Some techniques were used in ones own discipline

Way back in 1978, I worked briefly with a golf pro that advocated many of the principles of what became S&T. But, he didn't call it that. This short backswing, weight forward method worked well for short and medium irons and wedges, but I had trouble with low pulls for longer irons and woods.

Tried to get a follow-up lesson the following year, but he informed me he was quitting the golf pro business (he had his PGA card) and moving to insurance sales.

I then morphed to a more Nicklaus-style "swinging gate" with a very upright swing plane. This worked more-or-less until I got into my 40s, and it suddenly became difficult to pull off. My athleticism was starting to fade.

I eventually ended up with what is now called a center-pivot swing. Basically, I load on the inside of my right foot, rotate the hips to start downswing and pull hard to the left... let things fall into place. The weight allocations at set-up:

  •  a bit more weight forward on wedges and short irons (similar to S&T)
  •  balance in medium irons
  • "stay behind the ball" on woods...Sweep up and avoid the low pulls.

This balance sequence appears to mesh with recent "pressure plate" analysis of footwork in golf swings. The center-pivot tradeoff: more balance and control, less raw power.

Now, in 2008 I was diagnosed with an arthritic right hip, and the past few years it has been hurting my golf balance. I feel like I'm ready for a hip replacement, but my doc is not convinced the time is right. For several years I went with a slight draw as dominant shape, but the last year or so I was really hurting by the back nine, especially in multi-day events. This was even with a right thigh compression sleeve and CBD salve before the round.

One day just for grins I tried hitting mainly fades - and the pain didn't show up for some reason. So, I now primarily fade the ball. (I had faded irons in early 2000s, so it wasn't entirely new.) Pain isn't there, but hip does get stiff on back nine.

It's (S&T) also a much more athletic swing than most think thus those failures with it.

Yes, it's hard for the over-50 crowd to get everything jumped forward as much as needed in S&T. (I'm 70, so I'm in this group).

I stumbled across a few of Tom Saguto’s videos over the winter. When the 2021 golf season began I decided to try his method on the driving range. I was surprised at my results. I was hitting crisp shot after crisp shot. However, the next morning, I awoke with hip and lower back pain. I tried the method again and felt the pain, once again. Apparently, my body does not like the stack and tilt method. My tried and true golf swing works just fine!

I've gone to the S&T method from time-to-time with varying results. Of course, I'm basing what I am doing on my own understanding of the method and what I have picked up from a few YouTube videos, no lessons. For someone like me who has always struggled with a proper weight shift, especially getting the weight back onto the trail side so there CAN be a "shift" it can help with better balance and stability (especially) which would lead to more consistent contact.
