2021 Bank of Hope LPGA Match Play (May 26 - 30)

Is this the slowest match in the history of golf?  If not, it’s got to be in the JB Holmes neighborhood.  Less than quality shots after taking so long to hit.

Big mistake by Ally on the 17th. Gotta keep it dry. Can Sophia take advantage of the mistake? Her ball is plugged in the front bunker.

Just turned it on....why was Ally going at the pin location?  2 up 2 to play......hit front right part of green, no?

Congrats to Ally, that was a lot of golf. Little surprised Sophia made it that far along congrats to her as well.

Well, you don't see many matches won with double bogies, but you gotta cut them some slack. Gutsy performance by both players in that grind. Congrats to Ally. 

 

Sophia made a few too many mistakes, but almost overcame them.

Fun week, but I'm glad they only play match play once a year. A little too much luck, and having to beat just one opponent at a time just doesn't identify the best player in my opinion. 

 

Coverage needs work next year. More cameras and more shots shown. Hopefully they'll move it earlier in the season, or at a minimum get it out of the shadow of a major.

Great win for Ally, despite horrible shot selection on 17. Overall, it was gutsy, skilled and persistent. Maybe she will have more kudos now. These boards were notably quiet after her first victory. The second one seals it for me - that she is the real deal.

 

Great effort by Sophia too. Despite not getting her second win, she has shown she is the real deal by her consistently high level since the British Open win.

 

I have decided I don't like match play. Too slow. Endless discussions between players and their caddies! And not really that much to show for them really.

That summed it up nicely:  A LOT of luck went into it.  I'm glad Ally won, but win number one still counts.  And I agree with Shanker:  Sophia can play.  I don't mind match play, but man, the pace needs to pick up.

Agreed. Why have one player who busted their a** to get into the semi-finals lose twice on the last day of the event? Of course the real reason is television money. Need that second match to fill air time.

I'm not sure Wolf Creek would hold up to repeat plays, but it's sure fun to look at. I'm a sucker for elevated tees where one can see the hole, and heck, half the course. Yeah, there are a number of wonky holes, but overall it's solid.

Yeah, that's probably the reason, but you still run the risk of the consolation matching ending with a 7&6 score, with plenty of dead air to fill. What happens if the championship match finishes early, and you still have the 3rd place match still out there going into extra holes? Ugh. Talk about a buzzkill.

Personally I thought Wolf Creek was a joke to play - but thats just me and you know what they say about opinions. It was like playing a Golden Tee course in real life with massive/tricked up elevation changes on every single hole. I think I gave it a D+ in my TR but I'd have to go back and find what I wrote up about it. I definitely missed "it" - whatever "it" is that makes people love it so much.

 

Its not in the same league as Shadow Creek IMO.

This is what pro golf has become. All tours. Noticed several times that the other player and their caddie wouldn't even start discussing the shot until the other player had hit even though they could have. Happens frequently on both the LPGA and PGA.

I've been thinking the same thing about Morgan's attire.  Double roped pearls??  At a golf tournament?  And then what looked like sequins??  Just wear golf clothes Morgan!

I suspect that one of the factors for the players are things such as blisters and sores.  Here is Sophia Popov ... Grant Boone posted something about her and she had blisters on hands and feet from playing so much golf (7 rounds in 4 days or 4.5 days?) 

 

This may be why Shanshan bailed too.  It's not like the players get to take a cart because of sore feet!

It would be a brutal course to walk, IMO, I cant imagine playing that many rounds in that short a timespan. A lot more elevation changes/gulleys than you would think.

I was a little surprised the players did not use umbrellas. The sun does take a lot out of you and they had back to back double rounds on the weekend. 
as for the course it is a Disney layout with a lot of contrived features. Better suited for the high end gamblers which was its original intent I think.

the coverage was limited and not as good as the ncaa stuff.

finally I would be surprised if either finalist contends at the the us open this week. Too much golf in the heat to recover in time...

Yeah as I said before, the altitude and the dry heat will absolutely punch you in the face if you are not prepared for it and overly hydrating. Seems like maybe thats what happened in a couple cases this week.
