The Olympics Men’s Golf 2020/21

This week, things are different in that we head to Olympics but the same in that we have four days of strokeplay to look (forward) to. Justin Rose won the Gold Medal in 2016 as Golf returned to the Olympics after an absence of 112 years. Not one of the medal winners from 2016 returns this year and last withdrawals due to Covid19 mean that Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau won’t be teeing it up as they were supposed to. The performances of Si Woo Kim and Sunjae Im will be ones to watch. If they can head home with an Olympic medal they will manage to avoid mandatory military conscription:-

Defending Champion:-
Justin Rose

Notables in the Field:-

Collin Morikawa

Justin Thomas

Xander Schaufelle

Patrick Reed

Paul Casey

Tommy Fleetwood

Rory McIlroy

Shane Lowry

Hideki Matsuyama

Viktor Hovland

Sunjae Im

Si Woo Kim

The Course:-

Kasumigaseki Country Club

The fact that none of the defending medal winners are there is one of many weaknesses in the concept Olympic golf.

Why is Rahm out? Has he tested positive again?

Is it not the case that every athlete, regardless of whether they won or not have to qualify again before even thinking about defending?

Correct regarding Rahm. Announced over the weekend that he, like DeChambeau, has tested positive for Covid19. Whilst DeChambeau was replaced by Team USA, Spain are not going to replace Rahm.

Yes. It's certainly the norm with track & field. Not sure about events like dressage or synchronized swimming!

It makes sense with highly athletic events, where four years is a long time and performance can drop-off significantly. We know that golf isn't really like that though, and most professional golf tournaments traditionally do feature the defending champion.

With the Olympics being on a four year cycle, and the possibility the defending champion won't even get the chance to defend, it looks like the majority of golf medalists will be one-and-done. Does this help build the prestige of Olympic golf? I don't think so.

The IOC should add extra medals for men and women "amateur" golfers.

Just a thought...

These days, I'm not sure there is much difference between pros and the best "amateur" golfers.  Some come out of college and go right to the pro tours.

I had zero interest in watching any Olympic events , including golf , until now.  I’ll watch Reed play , because when he medals it’s going to make heads implode 😂, and that’s entertainment.

An announcer mentioned he’d be flying over last night and have only - day basically before competition.... as if that will scare him.  Remember. This is the guy who Monday qualified 267 times ( hyperbole ) to get his pga tour card.  You think showing up and playing a course blind and going low isn’t doable ??? His entire career is built on it.

Just hoping that he doesn’t get a late/early tee time. J will not be happy!

At least 4 times per year, all of the best golfers in the world compete against each other, so I find it very difficult to care much about the Olympics.  Just don't see the point of having golf as an Olympic sport.

Yeah, there's a better opportunity for a team event. We have the incredibly popular Ryder Cup and the mostly ignored President's Cup, but no team event where all 3 of those groups are competing.

Not sure what the format would be, but I'd be much more interested in seeing that.

It would be so much better as a team event. Greensomes, a two man scramble. Anything would be better than watching the same old, same old.

I hope the Korean golfers win so they can avoid 2 years of compulsory military service.

Huge pressure on them to come away with something. The recent example of Sang Moon Bae is not one that they would want to replicate I am sure. Did get as high as world number 26. Came back and whilst he got his Tour Card back, he has not been the same since. He is currently struggling to stay in the Top 1000.

I tell you. I caught a few heats of the men’s backstroke the other night.  And the one takeaway was that the Russians are flying under a new name.  I think it’s the “ hole in the wall gang “ or something. Really really odd.

edit. It’s ROC.   I knew I read something on a hole in the wall. Here’s the story.  Good times.  😂https://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/13/sports/russia-doping-sochi-olympics-2014.amp.html

That was awesome. Props to the young woman from Australia that got the gold. Her coach’s reaction was epic! 😂 He was going nuts.  Swimming, gymnastics, track and field and golf. It’s all I’m going to watch.

I am fine with not forcing the "defending champion" issue.  If someone wants to defend, go ahead and qualify.  Isn't that the good old American "pull yourself up by the bootstraps" mentality?

On another topic, if Reed has flown over at the last minute, I can't imagine how bad it will be to play Olympic-pressure golf with that kind of jet lag.

Arguable how much pressure there is? Not a massively strong field, no money at stake, some world ranking points? Whilst the element of playing for the Red, White and Blue will no doubt come into it, that aside, it’s almost like heading over for a kick trip to a early in the season Euro Tour event.

Arguable, yes, but if I'm Patrick Reed I'm thinking how cool would it be to shut up all the haters by flying in at the last minute to replace Dechambeau and winning Gold for my country.  I'd say that's more pressure than having to par 18 to win at some regular Tour event.  He may even be wondering when, if ever, he will have another chance to complete in the Olympics.
