Luxury SUV that fits 4 golf bags. Cullinan?

Recommended Posts

I’m newly in the market for a luxury SUV and I want something cool that fits 4 golf bags. My initial impression was the Cullinan but didn’t know if it could fit 4 bags.

Thoughts?

Nope. My neighbor has one - it's tiny.

You mean you don't bring 4 sets of clubs just for yourself every time you go to the course? Peasant....

I would not suggest the Cullinan.  Its got one of those awkward tailgate, lift gate, clamshell combo openings instead of having just one simple lift gate, like the Range Rover.  It adds an unnecessary step in the process of getting golf bags in the cargo area.  I will say that the two gates close automatically together so the process of closing isn't as stupid as the process of opening it.

As far as the space in the cargo area goes, it's big but not functionally big.  What I mean is that the load floor gets tight towards the back seats because the cargo area pushes in, thus eliminating area where you could put more bags.  The area directly next to the lift gate does have a cut out where you can put the club heads of longer clubs but I think you could only get 2 or 3 bags in before you start having to take clubs out of bags in order to fit them in.  4 would be a stretch if you aren't trying to play Jenga.

You might want to look at getting a used one because the newer ones have a partition that separates the back seats from the cargo area and I don't think you can put the rear sets down.  You definitely can in the older models.  Do not put your dog or cat in the back cargo area of a new Cullinan.

Definitely stay away from the Urus, Maybach GLS, G550/G63, and DBX.  They either have small cargo areas (DBX) or poorly designed cargo areas that hurt club storage (Maybach GLS).  The Urus actually has decent cut out areas for clubs but the cargo area is tiny and it would never hold 4 bags comfortably.  The biggest problem these luxury SUVs have is the width of the cargo area.  This issue plagues all the Porsches and most of the Range Rovers.

I would suggest looking these SUVs in the following order:

Model X Plaid

Alpina XB7

Bentayga

GLS550 AMG

Escalade Platinum

Navigator Black Label

A split tailgate is the superior design for rear openings. No better place for sitting to put on your shoes, having a beer in a field, or generally doing anything. Much easier to open in cramped spaces. This is a hill I am ready to die on.

Actually, this is a great option. I have a black ‘18 F-150 Limited and it has every bell and whistle available including massaging seats. I put an aluminum bed cover on it and it’s better than an SUV. Looks better too.

Looking at the 2021 edition. Not because I need it, but I don’t need the newest clubs either and I still get them. It’s not in the Rolls price range, but it’s over $80k.

Fair enough!  To each their own and I could see how there is value to the tailgate portion.  As I previously mentioned, I do like how it all folds up automatically on the Cullinan, making it much easier to close compared to other vehicles that have the same rear tailgate.  Maybe the reason I don't like it is because I'm always late to my tee time and constantly go from the trunk to tee.  I'm afraid that extra step of letting down the tailgate portion might cost me 2 strokes, ha!

At least it's not one of those tailgates that swings across instead of going up.  Those can be a real pain in my experience.

Yeah and it doesn't cost 6 figures either assuming you're not getting all the bells and whistles.  Personally, I would go with the X6 M myself, but the new X7 line is sweet.

$80,000 for an F150?  Wow! The sticker on my 2019 Pilot Touring (top model) was only $51,000.
