They would be able to show the 278 commercials Barkley said were still left, lol.

Exactly, they still needed to make their advertising money!

Match play just can close it out too fast, especially on only 12 holes.

TBD - G430 Max 15* - 818 H2 19*- Sub 70 Pro 23* - i525 6-U - SM9 54* / 58* / 62*  - F22

As Barkley has said. Tiger isn't very fun to play golf with. Pretty blah personalities they got for this one.

The exchanges with JT and Barkely were golden.  JT is exactly what you want for this type of thing, he'll make quips and a little smack here and there then let his game back it up.  Tiger brings the viewers because Tiger, Rory I love and could watch him swing a club for days on end but he's not too interactive on the course, JS is just too much of what he is normally, talking things to death etc..

I liked the idea 2Bgood had of two match play events back to back with fewer holes each.  It would guarantee more golf with a more predictable time frame.

The Match VIII

Tiger Woods and Fuzzy Zoeller

vs.

Ashley Perez and Sergio Garcia

Match referee: David Eger aka the guy who called into the Masters Committee regarding Tiger’s improper drop on #15.

Backup referee: John Feinstein

On course reporter: Rachel Uchitel

Studio commentators chirping in Tiger’s ear: Brandel Chamblee, Steve Williams, Hank Haney, Phil Mickelson

Special pre-match “the conversation” host: Greg Norman

On course snacks: popsicles

Tiger’s first drive would be a laser beam that would pierce the Earth’s mesosphere and enter outer space with all the adrenaline coursing through his veins.

Yup! I've watched all of these and he was by far the best fit. He's just a funny kid!

Obviously need my dawg Max Homa. Maybe Harry Higgs too. Them boys would be a blast.

And ya know who was a riot at trash talk? Danielle Kang when she did the match against the Foreplay clowns.

They absolutely need to do strokeplay on something like this to keep from this happening.  12 holes and its over on 9 and everyone just throws in the towel.  At least strokeplay gets us the full 12 holes.

Or really any format that keeps it going to the end, skins with a progressive pot for instance. Or even allow the guys to press in some way.

And as soon as Rory and Tiger went 3 down, they totally shut up and focused on winning.  Which was boring

Tough to talk much trash when the other team is owning you. On the flip side are going to talk trash to golf royalty when he can barely walk?

Anyone think that off camera they told JT and Spieth to turn it down a little?

JT and Spieth were certainly generous conceding Tiger's putts.

I watched more of it than I planned to or wanted to.

Most of the good (?) content was fleeting but interesting.

A few items (possibly repeated from above)

-They admitted that the flood lighting made it nigh-on impossible to even get their ball position correct at address, let alone judge distances or green contours

-Brian Anderson's attempts to make it all sound dramatic were amusing then annoying as usual. When the participants themselves refer to such events as hit-n-giggle golf the presenters should follow suit rather than treating it as four majors combined in one night.

-Anderson's begging them to do a golf-clinic explanation of every shot got tiresome. Spieth played along once but once these players approach the ball their concentration clicks on by instinct, experience and training and they aren't big on chat for good reason.

-Dare I say it? Someone in production or management may have had a word with Charles Barkley and told him not to begin every utterance with 'Hey!' - or as he pronounces it, 'Ay!' Anyway, it seemed to be less frequent and noticeable.

-Staging the event live in order to incorporate social media reaction in prime time is the tail wagging the dog. Nothing wrong with daylight play and tape delay a la the old Skins Game. TV broadcasting tweets has always been odd, given that anyone who gives a stuff about Twitter is already seeing the content...on Twitter. ESPN gave over to this format years ago and now bases entire broadcast hours on so-called controversial tweets. It is Vegas grind joint stuff. Cheap, disposable, forgettable. And...let's face it: the most clever and amusing tweets aren't coming from famous accounts, they're coming from anonymous accounts who may be mocking the players, the format etc. But the broadcast outlet wouldn't dare repeat them. So it's tame, safe stuff from the likes of tame, safe Tony Finau. Tape delay would also allow editing for better pacing and the all-important ad load.

-As winter sets in, people watch golf in part to see green grass and sunshine - a visual vacation as it were. Playing under sparse lighting at night offers neither of these.

These guys are basically corporate golfers

This is all they know- none have ever  had a real adult job besides golf

Their strength is their incredible shot making- it is diminished playing in the dark

I admire their skill , but I can find 4 guys on any South Philly street corner that are wittier and more genuine than the  guys in the match

4 mini tour guys going at it would probably be more entertaining

I don't know how, but I missed recording this event & didn't watch, and I think I'm glad.🤣

Me too, but I stumbled across it when it was pretty much over. Saw Speith hit that shot off the wood chips/pine straw and was reminded how brilliant he can be at times. I somehow missed the buildup to the match and wasn’t aware of the players, surrounding cast or format. I likely would have recorded it and at least fast forwarded through the BS and commercials.

I watch Chuck mostly in his capacity as an NBA critic. He and Shaq are among the very few sports commentators who share their honest opinions regardless of consequences. Both of them are funny and have tremendous credibility with that audience.

Chuck openly talks about his contracts and endorsements in a way that very few of those guys are willing to do. He quipped on The Match broadcast that being paid to do what he does is "like stealing" which I thought was hilarious.

Chuck's also known for being super generous with his money and time.

I'm a fan.

Really made it worthwhile. The exchange when Barkley referred to "Alabama University" was hysterical, as was JT's suggested challenge of Barkley vs a plate of cheese fries at Applebees.... Classic

When he said something along the lines of Tiger needing to play better because TNT (or TBS, I can't remember) had 795 commercials still to run.

The Dick’s Sporting GOODS commercials are an insult to golf. Not funny or clever. Just more millennial/ juvenile behavior.
