Coming in mid January,

  • Talking Stick (O'odham)

  • We-Ko-Pa (Segura)
  • We-Ko-Pa (Cholla)

  • Papago
  • SunRidge Canyon

  • Southern Dunes

If I were you I would switch out Papago for Estrella or Verde River and switch SunRidge for one of those or Eagle Mountain....Papago is a good course, don't get me wrong, but if you are visiting there are better options...switching out Sunridge may be a personal thing for me because I hate it and find it very gimmicky.  Eagle Mountain is much more playable and has great views.

Papago has such a good vibe now with Asu, Lou’s and Cartbarnguys. Centrally located to everything. Course should be good this winter. But yes, it is a muni and not a top tier course, but I think a good time for out of towners.

Anyone have a decent list of public courses in the Phoenix area, preferably noting which are 18/9 hole layouts, and yardage? What's the name of the area golf association? Doing a Google search, I keep finding these lists that are loaded with private clubs. Thanks!

The local golf association is the Arizona Golf Association, www.azgolf.org.

https://www.azgolf.org/course-directory-2/

Also cross reference that list with Arizona Golf Courses - Greenskeeper.org Free Online Golf Community since I think neither list is 100% complete, but close. I can see right off the bat that the golf association list is missing Ahwatukee CC for example.

For those travelling to AZ in December - here is a pretty good deal: https://www.quinterogolf.com/golf-course-vacation-rental-phoenix/

$700 for 2 rounds on Quintero and 2 rounds on Wickenburg Ranch and 2 nights stay at Quintero.

Based on December rates that makes the housing almost free.

Don't know if it is 36 a day or how if it can be spread as 18, 36, 18.

Are the TPC Scottsdale courses easy walks?

The Champions course is an easy walk and I've done it a few times. The greens/tees are reasonably close together except between #7 green and #8 tee which is maybe a 700 foot walk on a cartpath.

I've only played Stadium in the summer when it's 110 degrees out so I rode, but I can't remember any reason why it wouldn't be an easy walk.

Daylight is short in January. The two courses at Verrado would make a good combo without having to drive 30+ minutes between rounds.

Whirlwind's two courses are solid, but nothing special. Ambiente is a prairie style course. Definitely not your typical desert layout if that matters to you. Mountain Shadows is an executive course. It's supposed to be top notch. I'll be playing it for the first time next week.

Been in Scottsdale playing golf for over a week now. Played Grayhawk 6 times, TPC Stadium, We-ko-pa saguaro and playing Troon Pinnacle Tomorow along with Boulders south and one more Wednesday before flight, probably Pinnacle again or Grayhawk raptor.

I’ve used OP notes to choose courses and what I’ve learned from talking to locals and reading this thread.

Some thoughts:

absolutely loved TPC but it was very hard and above my ability to really challenge it. But very enjoyable nonetheless.

Grayhawk Raptor probably my favorite track in awhile, certainly since I’ve been here.

wekopa was ho hum to me. It was ok but it didn’t wow me. Views were cool but the course just wasn’t that difficult, unless you missed off the fairway then the ball rolls into the rocks and impossible to find.   I thought it was overpriced, although all the locals seem to love it there 🤷🏼‍♂️

This is a really golf rich area and really enjoyed my stay. Will be interesting to see Troon North and Boulders course. Took me a few days to realize I needed to chip more with my 60 degree then my 56. Coming from Washington, not used to not being able to spin the ball or have it stop on the greens. Call me a newbie, I’m definetly not a scratch golfer but never had so much problems stopping and spinning balls. Definetly takes some getting used to. Like most pheonix area guys would come to Washington and come up short on everything.

Big thanks to Oneputt for the breakdown and everybody that chimed in. Very pleasant trip and will be back.

Next trip, either Bandon Dunes in off peak or Pinehurst again (Tobacco road and #2 are the ones I want another crack at).

Had to move my schedule and will now be in Phoenix the 28th-30th.   Will be in the southern area of PHX.    Will be able to do 3 rounds so currently planning:

Southern Dunes

Estrella

Raven

Any others I should look at?? Aguila is an options.  Assume conditions will be good at that time.

* Note Raven is 50/50 on playing as I may still do a bag fitting with True Spec Vs  playing.  Was ready to toss the clubs and then the last round was in love with them.   LOL

What's wrong with Quintero? I'm visiting my parents for Christmas and was planning to play there. A few years ago I decided to play one really nice track per trip (my daily golf is in their community). I've played Grayhawk, Troon North, and TPC Stadium. I was going to play Quintero this time but also considering We Ko Pa. Nearly everything I've read about Quintero has been positive until your comment.

Coming in the second week of Jan for a golf trip with a buddy. If we pegged it at Wick Ranch on a Thursday at 1250, would we get all 18 in?

Trying to gauge when it’s impossible to play in evenings in Jan. Looking to do 36 a couple days. Trying to get the times lined up.

thanks.

Yeah, I think you'll be fine. The sun will be quite low in the sky, but you should have enough light on the 18th.

Many locals don't like the course. It's great eye candy with a number of elevated tees, but the overall layout doesn't hold up to multiple plays. If you haven't played it before, I'd definitely go ahead and book a round.

Nothing is wrong with Quintero.  If you are coming in from out of town, book it, play it, love it.  As noted above it only grinds on those who play it multiple times or aren't into scenic walks as part of golf.

Wanted to run an idea by the locals:

I'm going to be in town around the New Year and will probably play two courses. My girlfriend (Phoenix native) will be with me and I'm sure she'd much rather play than ride around in the cart. She can get it out there pretty well on good shots, but she's still very much a beginner, albeit with probably 50 rounds to her name. I'm not sure exactly how we're going to go about it just yet, but I was thinking that playing Quintero may be a good option. The tee sheet looks pretty sparse when I look online, the views are great, it's well out of town, seems to be more of a "destination" type course, etc etc.

It's a lot of course, for sure, but at the same time I think she would enjoy the scenery and whatnot and most importantly she would not feel too pressured or uncomfortable in the atmosphere. Am I off base here?

Other suggestions are welcomed

I wouldn't worry about it. The reality is that most players are pretty bad. They'll have some good shots, but the bad shots are pretty awful. I'd rather play with a short hitter knocking it straight than a player who's long and crooked. Played with a guy today who literally whiffed on 1/3rd of his shots. I mean, the ball is sitting there and he downright missed the ball. When he connected the ball was 20 to 30 yds out of bounds right. Poor buggers living a street over from the fairway.

Basically, play the course that you both want to play. Don't worry about the crowds.

Quintero is very nice for sure - but has some tough holes in terms of carries and such.  But you guys may enjoy it well enough.

Personally, a course like Verde River or Eagle Mountain may suit better for the playing experience.  Eagle has lots of slopes out to in that keep the ball in play unless you are a mile off.  The views of the valley are not bad.  Verde River up tees are playable and the views, while there are houses now, are still good of the Verde Valley.  The clubhouse after is 2nd to none in the valley.

The other that I would consider is the Boulders....the up tees are quite playable.  Plus decent views.

Enjoy.

Trying to put together our February visit, but have some questions still.  Appears to me that you cannot play both Boulder courses the same day when you’re not a member, am I correct? If this is the case, which course is the most favorite or better one? So we may actually do one course at Boulder and then go do on the other 18 at troon that afternoon.  Looking at whirlwind, talking stick, verde.
Our other days were doing 36 at Greyhawk and doing 36 at Wekopa.  Last year we did Quintero, Southern dunes and Wickenburg along with Aguila. So looking for something new and different if possible.  We are staying in Mesa, somewhat near Hoboken stadium, and have vehicle so travel is no problem.  We leave early and come back late, it’s all about golf for us. Thanks for all!!
